Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck Reviews

mcberko
St. Louis Premium Framboise 2.1
250mL bottle, pours a cloudy pinkish red with a small pink-white head. Aroma brings out lots of sweet raspberries - fairly fake. Flavour is along the same lines, just sweet fake raspberries, lots of artificial sweetener dominating. Cloying and fake. No good.

mcberko
St. Louis Premium Peche 2.2
250mL bottle, pours a dark copper orange with a small beige head. Aroma brings out real and artificial peaches, and just a touch of funk, with tons of sweetness. Flavour is totally a fake, sweet lambic, but inoffensive for what it is, with medium-high sweetness and peaches that are somewhere in between real and artificial tasting. Okay for what it is.

Draft at Yard House. Pours a dark cola brown color with a small beige head. The aroma has nice coffee with sweet caramel and cream. The flavor has coffee, caramel, mild Belgian yeast character, chocolate, I actually enjoyed this quite a bit, good company helps, but kind of surprised to catch this at Yard House Cincy.

Panzerfaust
St. Louis Gueuze 2.9
250ml bottle from Club de Cervezas. Pours a clear amber color with a medium but fast diminishing off-white head. Aroma is a bit sour but mostly shy in its expresiveness. Some melon, green apple and pear mixed up with touches of funk, old bread and cucumber. Restrained. Taste is also low intensity. A bit tart, a bit fruity, even a bit veggie. Not really complex, but all of these are just angles of the same semi-sour, semi-sweet taste. Hints of apples, pears, some funk and dough. Alright. Light to medium body, soft and fine carbonation. Low aftertaste. Decent enough, I’m glad I tried it. My introduction to the style but I’m sure it’s a really basic and dull specimen.

Panzerfaust
St. Louis Premium Kriek 3.5
250ml bottle from Club de Cervezas. Pours a deep ruby red color with a minimal pinkish fizzy head that vanishes after a few seconds. Aroma is basically cherries, but quite clean, nice without being sugary or syrupy. It’s a bit lactic and fresh. Taste is pleasant, mild tartness with some non intrusve sweetness. Good balance and the cherries integrate amazingly well. It’s not something I would kill to drink, but it’s one of the few good Krieks I’ve tried. Medium body, carbonation is soft but is presence is shown very well. Easy to drink. Smooth and mild. A very pleasant Kriek, much better than the cheap fruit lambics I tried before like Chapeau or Floris.

Pours a deep red with aromas of sour, light cherries. The body was medium and was sour, tart. Cherries seeped through enough and it was smoothe and easy.

St. Louis Kriek 2.1
Bottle @ Estaminet de la Longue Croix, Hondeghem, Belgium. Pours vivid reddish pink, small bubbly pinkish white head. Aroma is artificial cherries. Taste continues with a chemical sweetness and no real tartness expected of a lambic. Very light.

Kasteel Rouge 2.3
Bottle at home. Clear dark red, thin light pink head. Tooth wrecking sweet cherry syrup, with a strange herbal bitterness in it, sugar replacement. Very sweet, light bitter, finishes tart. Under medium body, low carbonation, leaves the tongue dry and stale. Way too sweet and that strange herbal taste and sour finish are messing with my tastebuds in a very negative way.

Van Honsebrouck Filou 2.7
Bouteille 33cl, BB 02.2018.

Clear, dark brown. Small offwhite head. Aroma has cocoa powder, milk chocolate, yeast, light coffee notes and hints of dried fruit. Similar flavour, seems more balanced than the aroma but still somewhat cloying. A good deal of alcohol warmth as well.

Brigand Belgian Ale 3.2

St. Louis Fond Tradition Kriek Lambic 3.7
Bottle at home. It pours dark purple with a quickly dissipating pink head. The aroma is earthy, funk, juicy cherry, tart lemon, Granny Smith apple, touch of vanilla and wood. The taste is crisp, tart, good mouth - pucker, sour cherry, juicy fruits, lemon sherbet, sour green apple, bright acidity, wood and some cherry jam with a dry finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Rather juicy and tart. Very nice stuff overall.

St. Louis Gueuze Fond Tradition 3.5
Decent head and foggy gold body. Good sweet aroma of funk and hay, sharp yeast notes. Flavour is soft yeast sharpness and a dry finish. While a fine gueuze there are better ones out there, though this works well as a sessionable one if you can find a few dozen outside-a Belgium to actually do a session with.

Kasteelbier Donker 3.4
Fizzy deep reddish brown. Head disintegrates fairly rapidly. Clear. Aroma is brown sugar, raisins, grape. Zippy esters, mild spicy funk. Taste is syrupy sweet - straight up brown sugar. Alcohol doesn’t burn, but is there. Taste of dates. Some mild bitterness on the finish, not much in the way of hops. Probably would benefit from some aging to soften the edges of the sweetness. Or some extra funk, or even a hint of sourness. Very bubbly. Syrupy.

St. Louis Premium Peche 2.2
Pours light red from the bottle. Aroma is, unsurprisingly, dominated by peach notes. Taste is very sweet, fruity, lots and lots of peach set atop a well carbonated palate. Refreshing and pleasant drinking if you like that sort of thing. While I am by no means a lambic expert, this one just seemed too monotone and one dimensional. Glad it was a small 25cl bottle. More and it would have worn out its welcome.

Bottle. Fresh brewed coffee, chocolate malt, and light hay aroma. Dark brown with small head. Moderately sweet latte, chocolate malt, and mildly bitter hay/quinine flavor. Decent body. Too bad the taste didn’t match the aroma.

Butelka. Trochę funku i agrestu, nutka cytryny. To w zasadzie wszystko.

Butelka. Miedziano czerwony kolor, spora piana koloru écru. Aromat słodkich malin, wręcz dżemu. Smak słodki, lekko kwaśny i wytrawny. W smaku maliny, trochę wiśni. Piwo jest dosyć płytkie, jednostajne, z męcząca słodyczą. Raczej do ominięcia.

Brigand Belgian Ale 3.2
