St. Louis Kriek 2.5

Bacchus Kriekenbier 3.6
Bottled 37.5 cl at 3 små rum, Göteborg, on February 5, 2016.
Clear brown color, small tan head. Sweet, almond paste, cherry scent. Sweet, cherries, light tart, some cherry seed/pip/stone taste, also tart cehrry to apples. Cherry aftertaste. Medium to fizzy mouthfeel, very low bitterness, but thereis some, likely more from cherry skin and stone than from hops?

Bottle @ home. Nice dark amber dark red color, full sized beige head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma is sweet malts, a bit sugary. Tastes about the same: sweet, sweet malts, some caramel, brown candy sugar. Average to medium body and carbonation. Drinkable but very sweet.

Bottle 33. Bière allant incontestablement vers le sucre : nez et bouche respirant candi, caramel, chocolat ... Bon mais pas pour boire au quotidien car le sucre cache les autres caractéristiques de cette brune.

On tap at Craft Room, Opatovina, Zagreb. Dark brown, reddish tint, creamy off white head. Toast, roasted malts, chocolate, coffee beans. Full body and creamy texture. Strong chocolate beginning, Merci chocolate with coffee flavor, coffee liquor, plums, alcohol finish. Strong coffee and chocolate aftertaste. Very complex.

Kasteel Rouge 3.5
Dark brown and ruby pour with small light pink head. Strong aromas of almonds, marzipan and glacé cherries. The taste is sweet and initially very strong on the glacé cherries, with the marzipan and almonds lingering in the mid-palate and finish. Full bodied and acidic which helps neutralise some of the sweetness. Interesting and enjoyable, if a little saccharine.

Kasteel Winter 2.4
33cl shared as Barista Chocolate Quad - an afterthought@Worldwide Tripel Tasting - Bierhandlung JAN2016. Thinnish "Dark Strong ale" rather than Quad pour, thinner than Gulden Draak even. Spiked nose full of Nespresso coffeebeans, Kahlua, hopjes and caramels in the nose. Disconcertingly light in the mouth for a 11% sipper, transporting artificial flavours hovering around instant "Caffé frapé" and boosted, thinned caramels (more burnt caramels than crème brûlée). - All (yeast) life is dead in this anaerobic and adulterated brewmix. Not a beer to make friends among natural-minded palates and a far cry from their more suavely matured Cuvee du Chateau.

Kasteel Winter 3.7
330cl bottle from Club de Cervezas as Barista Chocolate Quad. Pours a clear, bright mahogany color with a small off-white fizzy head that decays quickly and leaves a good lacing. Aroma is really nice, with strong toasted malts. Coffee-dominated notes, rough Arabica coffee-grains, coffee-cherries, toasted coffee, with coffee-liquor and smaller hints of bitter chocolate, truffles, figs and prunes. Some phenols come through although not in a disturbing way. Taste is coffee dominated but with much stronger presence of dark fruits, especially blueberries, plums, prunes and figs. Nice, strong finish and aftertaste. Unfortunately, the mouthfeel is a little bit dull. Light body, a bit watery which makes alcohol much more noticeable. It’s not just warming, it’s felt on other levels too. "Chocolate Quad" my ass. It is nowhere near in mouthfeel to a Quad. This would be the downside but in general I still like it. A coffee-infused Belgian, very unique and different.

330 ml bottle, as Kasteel Barista Chocolate Quad. ABV is 11%. Very dark colour, mid between mahogany and ebony. Low tan head. Strong aroma of coffee and chocolate, hints of vanilla and caramel. The flavour is fairly sweet, but not cloying. Distinct notes of chocolate, vanilla, caramel and coffee, dark dried fruits and a little hops in the finish. Moderately warming mouthfeel.

Kasteel Winter 4.1
From the corked, caged 750 ml. bottle stamped 355-15. So it was bottled toward the end of December 2015 I presume. Mine is listed as the alias Kasteel Barista Chocolate Quad. It pours a deep dark brown with ruby red highlights and a lingering tan head. The aroma is like baker’s chocolate with a hint of cherry, black licorice, and a little booze. Decent medium to bold body but there is a little acidity going on. The taste is a deep semi-sweet malty note with the same licorice and dark fruit characteristics. Boozy finish. It is delightfully warming but it goes into my head quickly.

St. Louis Fond Tradition Kriek Lambic 3.7
Draft sample. The beer is a clear red with a pinkish head of foam. The aroma has jammy cherry with a bit of doughy, grainy stuff going on as well. Somewhat sour taste, but finishes bready. Pretty good, actually.

Bacchus Vlaams Oud Bruin 2.7
Ruby red brown with minimal head. Strong cellar and vinegar yeasty aroma. Taste is quite mild but similar to aroma. Tongue tickling acidity with a sweetness of burnt sugar somewhere under the sourness. A bit watery at the end. Not bad, but I think this Flemish brown style ain’t for me.

30th Jan 2016: fourth beer in a random tasting session I am having with myself while the wife is away. Poured slowly into a Westmalle chalice it certainly looked good: deep red hue to Teak coloured clear body, on top a fading, but lasting off-white covering of small, tight bubbles. Bananas and vanilla in the nose, sweet malty molasses in the taste. A bit too sweet, even for my ’sweet tooth’, a normally prefer the maltier/sweeter brews, but this is ’over the top’ with it’s sugary feel. Interesting and different, just too sweet, needs some balance.

Bacchus Vlaams Oud Bruin 3.3
Bottle from Cambridge Blue. Mid brown with little carbonation and a small off-white head. Light smell of vinegar, cherry and cola nut. Slight sour taste. Not much personality or flavour but it’s pleasant. The well-carbonated palate is truly lively, as is the gently fruity soy aftertaste. Not the best Oud Bruin but it grows on me.

Kasteel Winter 3.7
Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color - almost black - with a small foamy tan head that faded and left no lacing. The aroma was weed, red wine and cocoa. The flavor was wood, chocolate, cola, nut, toasty malt, dark fruit and black licorice. Nicely complex. Insanely long finish. Medium body and smooth. Well done.

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11%. Colour mid between mahogany and ebony, moderate to low beige head. Lovely aroma, malty with strong notes of brown kandij sugar and caramel, also notes of dark dried fruits, hints of mild spices, leather and oak. Malty and medium sweet flavour, notes of dark dried fruits, brown sugar and caramel again, also hints of mild spices, chocolate and oak, moderate hops in the finish. Moderately warming mouthfeel. Excellent stuff.

Bottle, as "Barista Chocolate Quad." Nose of cocoa, dark roast coffee, sugar, dried fruit, and berries. Dark translucent brown, fat-bubbled and quickly collapsing sudsy head. Chocolate, light scorched coffee, brown sugar, dried fruit, and dates. Thin-medium body (quite thin for all the strength and flavors). Great nose. Flavors okay. Body thin.

Had as Barista Chocolate Quad. Pours translucent chocolate brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma presents hay, coffee, chocolate, spice and roast malt notes, saying together "Drink me!" Flavor delivers pleasing chocolate, roast malt, coffee, spice and subtle molasses tones, plus hints of hops and toffee. Mouthfeel features decent body and good fizz. Winter or Barista, a great Belgian. In memory of my dear friend Oscar Zeiger, 1949-2016.

19/XII/15 - 25cl from ... (I don’t know, I was just happy to finally get my hands on it, seems to be rare in Belgium, everywhere it’s replaced with the "premium kriek") @ home - BB: I/2016 (2015-1734)

Clear copper red to rusty red brown beer, creamy aery off-white to dirty pinkish beige head, pretty stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very sweet, cherry candy, bit funky, lemony touch. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body. Taste: sweet and sugary start, lots of cherry syrup, sourish touch as well, some real lambik funk underneath all that sweet violence. Aftertaste: lemony, candy, sugary, bit funky.

Not my favorite Kasteel, as much as I like quads, I have a hard time seeing this as one. Pours mahogany with minimal head. Aroma is very chocolate with some booze and a touch of prunes. Chocolate dominates the flavor too, not a bad thing, but I can’t discern the typical dark fruits, yeast, and malt that normally have me enjoying quads. It’s pretty tasty, but one time only for me.
