Widmer Brothers Brewing Company Reviews

Widmer Brothers Reserve Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout 3.7
Vintage 2012. Dark fruits and roasted (or even burnt) malt in the aroma with a touch of tar and alcohol (a little bit). Soft, slightly sour taste with a touch of berries. Alcohol is well hidden. Burnt malt in a long dry aftertaste with some berries notes at the end. Good.

Widmer Brothers Steel Bridge Porter 3.5
Very dark for a porter, almost black. Nice lacing. Pleasant aroma of toasty malt. Taste is malty chocolaty. Overall well balanced and smooth.

Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen 1.1
Typical American Weissbier, not as good as a German Weißbier. Pour cloudy with no yeast sediment. Looses head and racist like an orange peel that was discarded. Dumped it half way. I don't understand why there are so many fantastic American craft brews but no weissbier. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Widmer Brothers Reserve Chocolate Russian Imperial Stout 3.6
Rated on 8-05-2015 (Bottle-Limited Edition No. 9) The appearance of this beer is a small frothy, fizzy light brown head with a long retention, opaque dark brown body, fast rising carbonation, and one ring of lacing. The aroma is cocoa, coffee and sweet. The flavor is roasted coffee, cocoa, sweet, and it has a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel is light carbonation and this beer is light-medium bodied. A sipping beer that is very quaffable with a light roasted aftertaste. It is worth trying for sure!

Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen 2.7
Head disappeared fast. Aroma sort of sweet but not prevalent. Good carbonation. For a hefe I would expect more cloves/banana. I would rate this the Budlight of hefe. Drinkable, but not stellar. Better warm.

Widmer Brothers Old Embalmer - Barrel Aged 3.8
This was pretty tasty. Definitely still has the typical base of a barley wine with the molasses. I think the Pinot noir really only affects the finish, which is a bit weird.

Widmer Brothers Brrr Seasonal Ale 3.6

Widmer Brothers Brrr Seasonal Ale 4.1
12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/19/2015. Pours slightly hazy reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Great appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light roast, floral, grass, and toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light roast, floral, grass, and toasted earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon/orange rind, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light roast, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Red IPA style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Widmer Brothers Reserve Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout 3.1
Rated on 7-28-2015 (22 oz. bottle - Limited Edition No. 8) The appearance presents a medium sized light brown head that mostly diminished, opaque dark brown body, fast rising carbonation on the sides of the glass, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is roasted, malty, chocolate, caramel, and faint raspberry. The flavor is lightly bitter, roasted, chocolate, coffee, sweet, and malt. The mouthfeel is smooth and this beer is light-medium bodied. A quaffable beer, but the taste of it is not to my liking.

Widmer Brothers Reserve Barrel Aged Brrrbon 3.8
This is for ’12. Poured into snifter - clear dark orange with thick light tan head. Aroma - lots of bourbon note on nose, some dark fruits underneath. Light oak with bourbon notes on palate predominate, but finish is a bit earthy hoppy with some pine/resin.

Widmer Brothers Citra Blonde Summer Brew 3
12 oz bottle from backlog notes. Pours a clear golden color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have lemony citrus, bready malts, not much else going on, I won’t revisit.

Widmer Brothers Old Embalmer 3.6
Bottle @ Kaisla, Helsinki. Pours hazy copper with a little head that leaves some lacing. The aroma features dried fruitiness, caramel, syrup and a touch of piney hoppiness. Taste is light to medium sweet, later also bitter. Dried, sherry-themed fruitiness is assertive, hoppiness perhaps a bit too subdued. Also some caramel appears initially and in the finish, a touch of grapefruit. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth. Not bad but does not reach the (high) standards set byt the best American barley wines.

Widmer Brothers Old Embalmer - Barrel Aged 3.8

Widmer Brothers Brrr Seasonal Ale 3.2
I poured it from the bottle into a pint glass. It pours a reddish amber color with a decent off-white head and lacing. The aroma is hops and bready malt. The taste is bitter hops, bread, and some grapefruit peel. It was pretty smooth and creamy. This was pretty good.

Widmer Brothers Steel Bridge Porter 3.9
Bomber from the grocery store. Aroma is roasty, wet stone, bread, chocolate. Pours black with red highlights and a medium tan head with good retention. Taste is highly bitter for style with a grassy, earthy hop profile; lots of roast. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Good stuff.

Widmer Brothers Old Embalmer 2.8
2013 Vintage Wax-Capped 65 cL bottle Clear amber and copper coloured body with a thinnish tan head, only about a centimetre tall. Aroma of pit fruits, caramel, toffee, earth, plums, figs and a good bit of hops still noticeable. Medium-bodied; Strong toffee and figs up front that fade fast and don’t show much at all, especially malt. Aftertaste is showing barely anything - very interesting, just some water, light malt, toffee and figs with some light pit fruits and the smallest amount possible of alcohol. Overall, a very mild barley wine - perhaps its possible that I aged it too much and lost all it’s flavour. Not really worth buying nor aging, when after popping the wax there isn’t much to it, which is usually a decent thing for a barley wine, but not when it loses absolutely everything. I sampled this 65 cL wax-topped bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (P Street, Logan Circle), DC on 05-January-2015 for US$7,99 sampled at home in Washington exactly a year later on 05-January-2016. Vintage: 2013 // Purchased: January 2015 // Sampled: January 2016

T: Quite bitter but not astringent. Propped up by crackery malt. M: Very very dry, hint of alcohol, spritzy carbonation. O: Solid IPA. This one hits all the quintessential IPA points and is well built and clean.

Widmer Brothers / Cigar City Gentlemen’s Club (New Oak Spirals) 3.4
Draught at Collective on Tap, Woodinville, WA, as Gentlemen Club Oak Aged
Dark amber color, hazy, with compact head and nice lace. Good body strength, but the alcohol seems too evident; good malt flavor, but it has a too strong impression of vanilla cookies, and mild bourbon.
Solid beer, I couldn’t drink much of this though, nor it would excite me for a snifter.

2011 bottle at Real: gastronomy pub, Honolulu (thanks Tap Hunter). Pours reddish amber with fleeting head. A boozy bourbon nose leading to rich malty taste with bourbon accents. Very smooth drinking and enjorable; I’m sure aging has mellowed the edges on this one.

Widmer Brothers Brrr Seasonal Ale 3.6
12 oz bottle served in a snifter. Bottling date: 26 August 2015. Pours wih a dark red-brown body that’s initially covered by a good size bone-colored head. The head, however, soon reduces to a thin top coat. Very good lacing is left on the glass. Aroma: hoppy red ale Flavor: more bitter and hoppy than expected (I didn’t read the deScription first), but mild-moderate levels of each. Feel: medium body and carbonation. Overall: a Red IPA that works well as a winter seasonal.

Medium body. Pleasant.

Widmer Brothers Hefe Shandy 3.3
Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance - The beer pours a hazy golden orange color with a tiny fizzy white head. The head fades almost instantly, leaving just a trace of lace on the surface of the brew. Smell – The aroma of the brew is heaviest of a lemon smell mixed with a little bit of a wheaty and yeasty smell. Along with these aromas are some lighter notes of a grass smell as well. Taste – The taste begins with a wheat flavor mixed with a light sweetness of a lemonade flavor. The lemonade gets more intense as the taste advances, bringing more sweetness to the taste. All the while some more grainy flavors and a little bit of orange joins the taste, leaving one with a lightly sweetened, somewhat wheaty, but rather refreshing taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is quite light overall with a carbonation level that is rather medium. A little higher carbonation level may have been slightly better, but overall the feel was pretty good for the lighter abv. and lemonade flavors of the brew. Overall – A decent shandy overall. Lighter and rather refreshing without too much sweetness.
