The Felix, Nuneaton, 02/01/16. Bright gold with a generous white foam. Nuanced stewed hop under banana chip yeast nose. Almond, alcohol and unripe banana spice taste alluding at cinnamon. Washes weakly into boozy nothingness.

[ As Backyard Hell Bound ].
Clear medium to dark brown amber color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, spicy yeast, light hoppy, light to moderate yeasty, fruity. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a long duration, spicy, sweet malt, caramel. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. [20141010]

Tried at the Joseph Holt, Nuneaton. Deep chestnut brown colour with a cream coloured head. Light fruity aroma, but lots more on the taste coffee, chocolate taste light sweet, with a touch of spicy.

Cask at the Rose & Crown, Sandhurst. A dark chestnut colour with a tight beige head; malty aroma with some winter spice; a rich spicy malt taste with some burnt sugar, the spice is quite subtle making this a pleasant warming winter ale.

Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, moderate hoppy, citrus, grass, sweet fruit. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a long duration, citrus, grape, fruity, pale malt. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. [20141010]

Cask-conditioned at the JDW in WIllenhall, 12/11/2015. Amber with a decent, white, head. Aroma of tangerine fruit, grassy hops and a touch of caramel sweetness. Flavour had more citrus fruit, chewy malts and a dryish finish. Pretty good.

Backyard Hell Bound 3.4
Cask hand pull, The Felix, Nuneaton. Deep ruby capped with beige. Rather decadent liquorice and custard cream biscuit oak taste with sweet biscuit afters. Wet Dough and clove. Heady apple flecked-oak and lactic splashed nose. Cocoa dusted oak. Did I mention the oak? Rather good.

Overall: Decent bitter

The Felix, Nuneaton. Bright and lacy with a beckoning gust of greenery, nettles, Darjeeling and grapefruit. Doesn’t quite deliver on that promise but has a go with soapy grapefruit, flowers, jellied citrus, some creeping almond of booze. Nettles and soap. Good bitterness. Barely a crumb of nutty malt. Solid.

Cask at Figure of Eight, Birmingham. Definitely calls itself a BIPA now, but isn’t hoppy, nor black enough to be that. A fairly reasonable Premium I’d say. Okish toasty taste, with gentle graininess and a salt crust. Pretty light.

Cask at the Pump House, Shirley, Solihull. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is light hop, light roast. The flavour is moderate bitter with a rich, light grassy hop, light floral, light coffee malt palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A very hopped down black IPA which was a bit of a disappointment.

Backyard Penda 3.6
Hand-pulled half-pint, shared with Gene in The White Lion, Bridgnorth Shropshire on 5th Oct 2015 as we ’did Shropshire in a day’. Black bodied with a good tan topping that gave some good lacing. Aroma was roasted coffee beans with mild vanilla hints, the taste also leaning towards a coffee flavour, semi-sweet overall, with traces of piny hops in the finish.

On cask at the Salt Cot. Appearance - golden with a proportionate head and a slight haze. Nose - grapefruit and light banana. Taste - more of the same. Pithy edge to it. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - enjoyable and just what the current drinking population are after.

Backyard Bostin 3.4
Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark amber with a bubbly off white head. The aroma is yeast, light malt, light fruit. The flavour is moderate to light bitter with a light ripe red berry fruit, light mineral, light metallic hop bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. Somewhat light all round, but a great mild with plenty going on.

Cask at The Falcon, as ’Backyard Dandelion and Burdock Porter’. Cola brown, still, small scummy beige head. Aroma is bread and soot. Body is medium, touch of carbonation, quite smooth. Taste is thin chocolatey malt, rye bread, general ashy toffee vibe, soft bitterness. Not much D&B. Quite nice.

Cask at The Old Courthouse, Coleraine - pours golden orange with clean white head. Subtle aroma of sweetness, maybe a little elderflower. Mouthfeel a tiny bit thin, but probably due to the dryness. Good grapefruit bitterness, probably at the edge of sessionable. A little marmalade coming thru as it warms.

Hand-pulled cask pint in The Imperial, a Wetherspoons in Walsall on 4th July 2015. Blonde by name blonde by nature, white head on top. Mild citrusy feel to the whole thing, not as exciting as I’d hoped but a decent refreshing beer that is not going to test any of your senses too greatly.

Cask at the Red Lion & Pineapple, JDW - London. Pours totally clear yellow-gold with a fluffy white head. The nose holds minerals, orange rind, grain and melon. Medium sweet flavorbwith some rindy bitterness, more flinty minerals, pale bread, tangerine, mango. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dry finish, faintly resinous though, with more minerals, melon, faint pee, dry pale bread. Not bad on the whole.
