Listed solely as Einhorn Blonde at SLO Brewing, this a distinct sweetness noticeable right away. Not too sticky but not really all that great either. Very sticky sweet.

Clear copper orange color with fleeting ivory head. Raison, dark fruits, baked caramel, yeasty dark bread aromas. Medium body with average co2. Raison, baked caramel, dark bread lagered, yeasty flavors--on the light side for a dbl bock--not bad.

bottle from saarlander. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a massive chunky white head that takes some time to dissipate. Lacing mind need a chisle to remove. Aroma has hay, cracker, some perfumey florals. Taste is sweet with a touch of bittering hops. Maybe a little sweeter than I’d like, but its still easy to drink. With temps starting to close in on 100 degrees, it’s a welcome beer.

Bomber from Saarlander over the holidays - thanks, Secret Santa! Found this to be a decent, unassuming example of the style that went down fairly well on a chilly eve. Some dry hops detectable in the nose, and light bittering notes complemented things decently. But overall, while it was solid it was also just a bit too chewy.

Bottle; poured a dull orange color that had a bit of depth. Quickly diminishing head. Aroma of wheat, earth, fruit, with some clove and sweetness. Wasn’t expecting too much, but actually it was quite enjoyable. Wheaty with a bit of earthy, perhaps smoky, elements. A touch of sweetness and fruit. A bit messy, but overall there was some nice flavor.

A: The beer pours a slightly cloudy golden orange color with a finger of white head. S: Definitely has some spice notes to it. Quite a lot of clove and actually some banana notes to it as well. There is a touch of spiced/mulled cider in there and sweet bread and malt aromas. T: The flavor is a bit bland, but generally unoffensive. Mostly bready malt with a little bit of grass and citrus peel. Clove flavors are present as is some banana. A touch light/watery on the finish. M: Light to medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. O: Certainly not the worst American hefeweizen, but there are plenty of much better examples out there.

22oz bottle. Opaque amber color with a small head that quickly dissipates. Lemon, smokey, soy sauce, and herbal aroma. Similar flavor with a big savory finish and big sweetness. Lower carbonation and a full body. Something is wrong here, and I’m thinking fermentation/yeast autolysis and possible contamination problems.

22oz bottle. This one was a gusher upon opening. Not sure whether that was due to contamination or calcium oxilate or fusarium or something else, but it’s never a good sign to have your beer start foaming onto the table when opened. Once in the glass, Unikator it a mostly clear mahogany brown color with a small beige head that has poor retention. Good color for a dark doppelbock, and looks filtered. Head could use some work. The aroma is intensely malty with sweet bread, bread crust, dark toasted grain, molasses, and a hint of chocolate. The flavor is full and malty with a malt sweetness that just never crosses over the line into cloying territory. Hops are almost undetectable. The finish has just a touch of ashy harshness to it that keeps this from being solid all-around. Body is soft and full with lower carbonation. Overall, maybe a touch on the sweet side for it’s ABV, but compares favorably with many German examples I’ve had. The ashy finish is the only thing really holding this back. And what was that gushing about?

Sampled on 6/18/2011. This Weizenbock pours a slightly hazy medium orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet with a touch of funk and yeast. A medium bodied weizenbock. The malts are caramel and sweet, a touch bready and fruity. There is also a touch of funk and tartness, which I am not sure is supposed to be there. The hops are herbal and floral. Nicely balanced. Good carbonation. Interesting beer, the tartness kind of balances the malt sweetness. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

A: Pours golden amber in color with a sizable white head with fairly poor retention. S: Really a strange aroma for a weizenbock. Big time apple cider to it and very sweet, maybe some honey, but very little malt aroma. Decent enough banana and a very mild spice note, but not off to a good start. T: More of that apple cider smell. Slightly spiced (clove and nutmeg), a hint of of banana, and almost no malt. Not any bread or wheat to it at all. The more I drink, the more this reminds me of soda. M: Light to medium in body with a moderate level of carbonation. O: Nothing like any Weizenbock I’ve ever had. Not something I plan on having again.

Einhorn Der Kommissar
31-Jan-11 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 18-Jan-11 for $3.99 at Total Wine & More in Tustin, CA) The hazy, amber beer pours a short, bubbly head that fizzes away in the blink of an eye, leaving not even a small ring around the edge, so lacing is impossible. The nose offers aromas of fireplace, plantains, ripe bananas, apples, and dark bread. On the palate, the beer tastes like banana bread, smoked wood, green bananas, and clove, but the finish is heavily bready, with the finale of apple skins sending the beer over the edge into the unpleasant range. Medium in weight, but low in carbonation or anything else that could keep the palate feeling refreshed, so the beer finishes heavy and stale. Overall, this beer, like the other two I’ve tried from this brewery, is subpar. Three strikes and y’er out.

Einhorn Spezial Pilsner
31-Jan-11 (12-oz bottle: Purchased 03-Nov-10 for $1.39 at Total Wine & More in Tustin, CA) This highly over-carbonated beer pours a volcanic eruption of foam, no matter how carefully I try to pour the beer. The head covering the cloudy, golden-yellow beer is comprised of huge bubbles that pop rapidly, deflating the foamy head quickly and in rocky fashion. The nose is lemony, cobwebby, and musty, with a bready, grainy malt backing, some wet hay and sour dough, and a trace of vinegar. On the palate, the bready malt base is lightly sweet and is delicately balanced by lemony, grassy hops. The beer is modestly spicy, slightly tart, and a bit cobwebby in flavor. Weight is light-plus, the mouthfeel is dry, dusty, and slightly acidic, and the high level of carbonation is expansive in the mouth. Chunks of foam stick to the glass. Overall, there are too many flaws to get past. The flavor is okay, but the nose is a bit off-putting. 0 for 2 for this brewery.

Einhorn Hefeweizen
31-Jan-11 (12-oz bottle: Purchased 03-Nov-10 for $1.39 at Total Wine & More in Tustin, CA) This is not one of the better examples of a hefeweizen, and frankly, it’s pretty poor. The beer pours hazy amber, so it’s quite a bit darker than expected, and the fleeting head is barely more than a bubbly, wafer-thin layer that dissipates quickly and completely. The doughy, papery nose is heavy on the clove with a bit less contribution from ripe banana, but the aroma also exhibits traces of acetone and vinegar. The flavor is decidedly doughy, bready and papery, and the clove is quite strong relative to other flavors such as the hint of banana. Medium in body with medium, but prickly carbonation. Overall, this is not enjoyable at all. There is no bottling date on the bottle, so there’s no telling how old the beer is, but it doesn’t taste especially fresh. At least, I’m hoping that’s the case. In either case, the brewery needs to put bottling dates on the product so consumers and retailers alike can identify old beer.

Tap at Naja’s. Pours hazy orange with a small, rocky white head, short retention with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie, toasted), light hops (earthy), and average esters (banana). Flavor is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, toasted), light hops (earthy), and average esters (banana) with notes of ginger. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation, low creaminess with a dry finish.

Bottle from Total Wine. Pours with a only a lightly hazed gold body and a quick to fade white head. Aromas of banana, brash clove, vanilla and dill pickle brine (acidic/vinegar/dill/garlic). Flavor is bad. Rotten garbage, cotton balls, umami, dill, orange, vinegar. Pretty poorly made (at least in this form). Acidic finish. Lively bubbles. Not a fan to say the least.

Bottle. The pour is all white head. 90% of a pint glass was foam with an angled pour. Beneath is a chill hazed (this isn’t a Kellerbier?) golden body. Aromas of spicy, fruity, hop notes. Dry and grainy with a bit of lemon peel. Some soap. Flavors of lemon, lemon peel, dry grain and a bit grassy. There is a somewhat noticeable acidic note. Lively bubbles (as expected from the head), cover what I expect would be a very thin body. Hard to tell when the carbonation is so harsh.

~Bready, bannana, malty aroma, dark fruits, plum and raisin, some clove spiciness. ~Pours a light golden amber with small lasting white head. ~Spicy phenol is in flavor and a bit harsh., banana yeast and bready malts. ~Med body, med CO2, rich sweet malty finish. ~Enjoyable Weizenbock. That spicy phenol in flavor throws balance out of whack. Possibly fermentation was a bit too hot. Nice aroma though!

Bottle; poured a dark gold/amber with a small and quickly diminishing white head. Aroma of clove and herbs predominantly; some wheat and caramel. Didn’t really catch any banana in there. Flavor was really weird for the style, and quite honestly not very good. Seemed more honey than wheat. Some spice and medicine. Didn’t come close to finishing.

12oz bottle, no date--gusher! My pants and carpet are angry. Clear medium golden with lots of dark tiny suspended sediment and a one finger white head, fair retention. Lemon infected acidity, sulfur, corn, and biscuits are the aroma. Flavor pulls back on the lemon a bit, and adds leather--in the aged barleywine or aged brett beer--and finishes with a dirty earthy bitterness, peaking at a 3. Moderate carbonation with a thin watery body. This sucked, but I liked the unintentional leather infection thing.

****UPDATE**** Got a fresh bottle and cracked it open for another taste of this brew. Thanks go out to Doug Martin for going out of his way to provide OUTSTANDING customer service. Poured a clear golden color with a small white head. While none of the aromas smack you in the face, notes of honey and malts are present. Tasting this pils presents a crisp, grassy, honey flavor with a light bitter dry finish. Light bodied, easy to drink, and refreshing, exactly what a pilsner should be.

Bottle; poured a pretyy clear, dull gold with a smallish white head. Aroma of sweet malt, honey, earth, yeast, grass with a hint of floral. Quite bready overall. 12oz bottle. Hazier dull gold color than you would expect for a pils, with a thin head that doesn’t last very long. The aroma is a pleasant mix of sweet, honey-tinged malt, and floral and spicy hops. The flavor has lightly sweet pale malt that has a little bread character, balanced by medium grassy and herbal hop bitterness. Throw in a hint of lemon as well, but not the acidity. There is also a light fruitiness and an almost yeasty doughy quality. The body is on the light side, but maintains a nice texture. This has a good deal of character for a pils, without being over-hopped like many American takes on the German style. This just has an easy-drinking balance with a pleasing bitterness in the finish.

12oz bottle. I wish I could remember who is contract brewing for these guys... someone down in LA. Pours a hazy gold-orange color with a big frothy white head and yeast cascading down after the pour. Aroma of banana, lemon, and yeast. Seems typical of the style, but comes across a little messy. The flavor is like banana bread with some spicy cloves and grainy wheat. On the sweet side with a medium-light creamy body. Not really bad, but just not inspiring at all. Yes, it’s a hefeweizen, but there is not special quality to it.

Pours a slightly hazy pale golden with a thin, spotty-lacing white head. Aroma of grainy pale malts and a characteristic that reminds me of clothes that have been sitting in an old wooden dresser for too long. I think I’m getting it from the aroma hops. Body starts with good fullness for the style and a touch of pale grainy malty sweetness and light fruitiness before some grassy herbal hoppy bitterness. FInishes fairly crisp and bittersweet. A good attempt at the style, but I think I prefer the Czech-style pilseners.

Pours a hazy orange amber with a well-lacing froth of white head. Aroma of lightly sweet malted wheat and some earthy noble hops with a hint of banana esters and lemon citrus. Starts semi-sweet and wheaty with some lightly toasted biscuity character and light clove spice with an herbal hoppy bitterness toward a crisp finish. Farily true to style, but could use a little more yeasty esters and sweetness.
