Vigorously carbonated, and the hoppiest Belgian beer I’ve yet tasted. Hops dominate the aroma, but rather than the fresh citrusy aroma of a CA beer, this is grassy, vegetal and complex.
It looks dark golden-red, just a few shades short of a Dark Strong Ale.
There’s a firm sweetness in the taste, but it’s peeking through the windows of a robust hop bitterness. There’s an almost refried-bean flavor in the backtaste, which sounds repulsive but is actually quite satisfying and intriguing.
Mouthfeel is tinged with the 9% alcohol level and firm carbonation. Dry enough to enjoy as an aperitif, this is a good beer that may disappoint some expecting a more dessert-like quaff. Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 14, 2009 Sweet and hoppy all at the same time. A big dose of earthiness in the aroma is killer here, though - I love the smell of Regenboog beers. This beer has some candied fruit sweetness with a resounding but unusual spiciness - pepper and mutated cinnamon. Great conditioning, lovely color, perfect body, refreshing at 9%, weird. What more could you want? Thanks Eugene. TaktikMTL (2786), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada

(Rating #2692) theisti (1661), Leawood, Kansas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 5, 2009 33 cl bottle graciously shared by beastiefan2k. Pour is a cloudy hazed brown with some darkish orange and a billowing 4 inch tan head. Falls with a bunch of sticky lacing. Aroma is herbal, medicinal and musky earthy - weird but engaging. There is also a sweet fruit tartness noticeable. Taste is sour berry fruit, earthy, some cherry sweetness, and the medicinal and herbal notes from the nose. Palate is medium, coats the mouth - with a high level of carbonation initially that relaxes a bit after it opens up. This was a fun one, thanks for sharing Eugene. beastiefan2k (1601), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 4, 2009 Got the ill hookup from fata2683, thanks a lot Keith. Cap pops off, its not a gusher but the foam was steadily moving up the neck. This translates to a giant, bubbly, foamy, head that sits atop a thick, ruby-brown colored body that you cannot see through. The head eventually fades to a surface covering lacing. The bottle conditioning is apparent, as usually the case with t’Smisje, when the bottom of the bottle completely muddies up the beer with a ton of yeast poop. Aroma is very thick and complex. There is lots of tart berry, its earthy and musky, and has the house yeastiness common to most of the lineup. Lots of disparate aspects fighting in the beer and it seems to come off well. Its like an old world concoction. Flavor has some more of that tart berry and some fruit juice. There is a lightly sweet yet bitter finish. The mouthfeel is overcarbonated at first but calms down nicely.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 27, 2009 Bottle from Bierkoning. Dark brown body with rocky, lasting head. Toasty nose of caramel and sweet. First lots of bitter, then warming with roasty malts and chocolate. Very bitter finish. Another fine and tasty product from ’t Smisje.
