I love session beers, but dont like the prices

Posted by keanex

Lately a lot of breweries have been putting out excellent session beers. Founders All Day IPA, Victory Swing Saison, and Lagunitas Daytime IPA, to name a few. They are excellent beers that provide a wonderful taste experience at a low alcohol content so I can drink them all day. The problem is, my wallet can’t afford to drink them all day. The problem that I’ve seen is that people either want a beer that they can drink all day, available at a price point that makes this manner of drinking affordable, or they want something a bit beefier in alcohol for sitting down after a hard day of work that they can sip to.

At $10.49 for a 6 pack of Founders All Day IPA the initial fuss over it has subsided and I’ve seen many stores left with cases from the initial batch. The problem, from what I see and have stated above, is that not many people want to pay $10.49 for a 6 pack of something meant to be enjoyed in copious amounts and if they are going to drink it as a "one a day thing" most people I’ve seen would rather spend $10.49 on Founders Centennial IPA. Centennial IPA is 7.2% alcohol, is a great tasting beer, and is the same price as it’s 4.7% sibling. Now as a home brewer I know fully well that a 4.7% alcohol beer is at least 30% cheaper to produce. The lower alcohol content means less malts used as well as less hops. Now we know Founders isn’t afraid to charge more for a higher ABV/more costly beer, look at Double Trouble, so why not give us consumers our session beers at a reasonable cost? Why isn’t All Day IPA sitting at $8 on the shelves?

The same goes for Victory. I love Swing, but even at $9 I would rather pick up something a bit cheaper if I’m going to drink the beer all day. Victory is also no stranger to charging more for their more expensive offerings, Storm King and Golden Money, so it’s not about being uniform in price.

I love these session beers, I love not having to resort to a mass produced lager to enjoy beer all day, but frankly I can’t afford to spend ~$20 every time I want to have a day out with the guys, especially when I can buy Sierra Nevada Pale Ale at $13 for a 12 pack. Brewers, do what’s right and start charging us what’s fair for these beers.

( replies) Read more of this discussion at RateBeer

Funky Buddha Brewery opening

Posted by DrewFace

June 1, I believe. Anyone gonna be there? Maybe do IP trade if so. Talked to a lady at the lounge who said once they open it, they’ll start selling bottles and doing growler fills again.
Posted by IrishBoy

The thread was frozen after only 39 pages so I will start a new one:
Drinking a Les Trois Mousquetaires G.C. Weizenbock after a very busy past week and a 15 mile (800 calorie) bicycle ride that was a great trade inclusion from TheEpeeist who has become my local wheat styles trade partner for great East Coast beers!

funniest beer youve ever had

Posted by Chudwick

Was there ever a beer you tried and for whatever reason, it just made you laugh out loud? I don’t mean that it made you drunk and you laughed as a result from the drunkenness. I mean: it was so bad, so different, so over-hyped, so unexpected, so expected, so amusing to read the label, etc. that it made guffaw, inviting a brouhaha.

(28 replies) Read more of this discussion at RateBeer

Cellar report: SN 30th Anniversary Fritz and Kens RIS

Posted by GT2

Wow, this beer really improved from 2010 to now. Softened up, perfect palate with big oat silkiness and massive dark chocolate.
Smoked Beers

Posted by queenholly

I especially loved smoked beers. I’ve noticed quite a few of the smoked beers are actually categorized by styles other than smoked, when they are most definitely smoked. For example I’ve made a couple of requests in the past for style corrections which have never happened. This makes me wonder if there are some criteria that I’m not aware of when it comes to categorizing a smoked beer, and was wondering if anyone could provide some clarification?

(15 replies) Read more of this discussion at RateBeer

Who really drinks all the lambics that go to the US?

Posted by KyotoLefty

Belgian brewers are shutting down exports to other parts of the world, including where I live, because there is so much of a demand in the States, and they can sell beer there for 2-3 times the usual price.
Against Hoppy Beer

Posted by ephemeral8

Slate article " target="_blank" target="_blank"http://www.slate.com/articles/life/drink/2013/05/hoppy_beer_is_awful_or_at_least_its_bitterness_is_ruining_craft_beer_s_reputation.html"" As a beer writer, I often find myself preaching the word about craft beer to people who don’t want to hear it. There are a lot of Bud Light fans and people who’d rather sip a zinfandel, even in the craft beer capital of the world, Portland, Ore., where I live. So when a homebrewer friend recently decided to visit my husband and me from Tennessee, I was excited to spend time with a kindred spirit, someone with whom I could share my favorite brews without having to make a hard sell. The first brewery I took him to was Hopworks Urban Brewery, where I ordered us a pitcher of the Velvet English session beer. After a few sips, I noticed that he had pushed away his glass. “I’m sorry, guys,” he said when he noticed our puzzled expressions. “This is just way too hoppy for me.” I was floored. Session beer is light and drinkable—it’s called session beer because you’re supposed to be able to drink several over the course of a drinking session without ruining your palate. If one of my favorite session beers was too hoppy and bitter for an avid beer drinker—for a homebrewer who is currently brewing beer to serve at his own wedding—what would he think of the famed Pacific Northwest IPAs? Do friends let friends drink only pilsners? That’s when I realized that I had a problem. In fact, everyone I know in the craft beer industry has a problem: We’re so addicted to hops that we don’t even notice them anymore. Hops are the flowers of the climbing plant Humulus lupulus, a member of the family Cannabaceae (which also includes, yes, cannabis), and they’re a critical ingredient in beer. Beer is made by steeping grain in hot water to turn its starches into sugar (which is later converted to alcohol by yeast). While the resulting liquid, called wort, is boiling, brewers add hops to tone down the mixture’s sweetness—without hops, beer would taste like Coke.* Recipes usually call for only a few grams of hops per gallon of beer produced, but those little flowers pack a big punch. In addition to their bittering properties, hops impart strong piney, spicy, or fruity flavors and aromas. They also contain antimicrobial agents that act as natural preservatives. Although they make up a small proportion of the ingredients used in beer, hops command the vast majority of the industry’s passion. Beer geeks have an intensely emotional relationship to hops. We wax poetic about the differences among varieties: the mildness of the Saaz, the bright tang of the exotic Sorachi Ace. In my wanderings through bottle shops, breweries, and beer conferences, I’ve seen hop cufflinks, hop bracelets, hop tattoos. I’m a party to the hop mania: I have hop-scented soap in my shower and hop-and-peppermint foot cream by my bed.

(29 replies) Read more of this discussion at RateBeer
