This French style Farmhouse Ale or Saison is produced using a traditional French yeast strain yielding a spicy, cloudy, golden colored ale with tart citrus notes and generous hop bitterness. The alcohol level is moderately high as these beers were often brewed in the late spring for summer consumption at the farmer’s table. The alcohol had to preserve the beer prior to refrigeration. Yet, these beers had to be thirst quenching for the field workers in the hot summer months. This Saison is named for African-American author W.E.B. Du Bois, and his famous visit to Durham in the early 1900s. He later published “The Upbuilding of Black Durham. The Success of the Negroes and Their Value to a Tolerant and Helpful Southern City” talking about the progress he witnessed in Durham and his writing is considered one of the founding cornerstones helping to fuel the civil rights movement..
