Clearly not content with creating Australia’s first single hop beer brewed with the Sorachi Ace variety developed by Japanese brewery Sapporo (which has previously only appeared as one of the hops in the Mornington Peninsula Brewery’s Witbier), True South’s Sam Füss decided to raid her garden too. Grabbing a load of fresh mint to throw into the hopback, she’s come up with a beer that promises to showcase the lemongrass and lemon myrtle characters of the hop with a splash of refreshing mint. Sam says: “To taste it has a soft minty/wheaty front palate that gives way to a great lemony burst, finishing with a big, but not over the top bitterness.” If it all sounds a little weird, rest assured that there’s another minty experiment going on at the Mountain Goat brewery, where their Steam Ale is being run through Randy the Hopinator filled with fresh mint and peaches and is tasting – and smelling – rather lovely.
