The Pink Boots Society of Western Pennsylvania created a beer at Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery during the group’s recent Big Boots Brew Day for Pittsburgh Craft Beer week 2016. It included Susan Sternberger, Dani Gais, Sandy Cindrich, Dyana Sloan, Jessica Hoover, Erika Shumaker, Meg Evans, Tiffany Thompson, Dana Staudt, Linda Nyman, Colleen Vecellio, Alexandrea Miller, Krystle Eaton, Chris Dilla, Jennifer Jones, and Dana Quinlan. The Pink Boots Society of Western Pennsylvania released this special gose beer through Rock Bottom Pittsburgh. The brew — a lime gose — is initially at Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery in Homestead. Profits will be used to fund the scholarship program of the national society, which aims to empower women beer professionals to advance their careers through education. More than 15 Pink Boots women joined Rock Bottom head brewer Meg Evans on March 5 for “Big Boots Brew Day” at the brewery and all helped make this beer. It was the weekend before International Women’s Day, when similar groups in other cities gathered for Pink Boots collaboration brews. Ms. Evans explained that a gose — pronounced GOSE-uh — is an ale style that originated in Goslar, Germany, and is made with half malted wheat to have a characteristic tartness and lightness. This one was “kettle soured” by adding lactobacillus during brewing and also soaked with some limes. She reported yesterday that “it seriously has some classic lime margarita flavors going on. I’m talking mild salinity (think salty rim) and the classic lime taste.” You can try it with some chili, as Rock Bottom also is hosting a chili cook-off, pitting six teams from within the restaurant. You can taste them all for a $5 donation that will go to the Pink Boots Society. If you missed the event, the gose also will be poured Monday at the Independent Brewing Co. in Squirrel Hill, at Smallman Galley in the Strip District and at Piper’s Pub on the South Side and April 19 — during Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week — also at Bocktown Beer & Grill in North Fayette and near Monaca. Ms. Evans says she hopes to have gose at Rock Bottom to serve through Craft Beer Week, “but I can’t make promises.” Tonight, she will raffle off a pair of tickets to the Craft Beer Week Kickoff Party there.
