Broadside was launched as a 6.3% bottled beer in 1972 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from the brewery.
Ingredients: Pale, Black, and Chocolate malts; First Gold hops
Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit. The fullness of the beer makes it a good accompaniment for hearty food.

snowcrash000 (588) - Cologne, GERMANY - FEB 12, 2019
UPDATED: FEB 12, 2019 Pours a deep, dark amber, mahogany coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt and dark fruits, with just a hint of estery spice. Taste is dominated by bready, caramel malt, strong notes of toffee, dark fruits: fig, raisin, dates and estery spice, with just a hint of chocolate and herbal hops. Finishes bittersweet, with some dark fruit and estery spice lingering in the aftertaste. Thick mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation. A rich English Strong Ale that almost brings to mind a Belgian Dubbel with its strong caramel malt, dark fruit and estery spice notes, but also features some nice bitter, herbal hops for a good balance that prevents this from becoming quite too sweet. Incredibly rich depth of flavor and mouthfeel for the ABV.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2018 11-12-2018; bottle; at home (bought somewhere in England). The looks of the beer are very nice. I like a dark beer like this. The colour is a very dark chestnut. It kina approaches black. The beer has a lovely reddish brown glow. Even though the beer is very dark, I can tell that it is crystal clear. On top there is lovely frothy almond coloured head. Foam retention is good. A thick layer stays on top of the beer for quite some time. Pretty perfect to me. The aromas of the beer are nice and somehow interesting. Malts give some touches of caramel and toffee. There is a hint of chocolate. Besides this, there also is a smokey peaty aroma. Quite nice, and a nice addition to the beer. The foam gives a slight metallic taste, that is a bit less nice. Hops are spicy and slightly fruity. There are some nice fruity aromas present in the beer. Sweet fruit notes, that must be the fruitcake aromas that should be there if I can believe the writing on the bottle. The taste of the beer is nice. Quite some sweetness from the malts. Besides this, there are nice bitter hops and some bitter toast notes. There is a nice fruity slightly sour touch, bringing the final balance to the beer together with the slight savoury note, also from the toast. Nicely balanced. The palate of the beer is nice. Medium body, smooth texture and medium-high carbonation. The finish of the beer is nice. Fruity notes, malty sweets and then some chocolate and bitter hops, ending in a rather dry hoppy thing. Not bad. I really like this beer.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2018 Purchased rather accidentally, but perhaps serendipitously so! This classic still has that touch of class. A silky mouthfeel, with a malty base that displays both vinous red fruits and a hit of caramel, it also carries a certain edge of liquorice. The alcohol is ever so slightly present. Really solid beer, just not quite what I would choose, but I have enjoyed this ubiqutous offering from Adnams.

NeverBinge (320) - Cologne, GERMANY - NOV 18, 2018
Dark red-brown ale with an equally dark, deep and sweet malty smell of raisins, prunes, figs, a hint of roastiness, treacle... a very delicious aroma spectrum. On the tongue, it's rather bitter with a faint sweet edge, but not quite as intense as the aroma and appearance seem to promise. In a sense, it becomes the victim of its own impressive overture - unable to carry on quite as profoundly as it started out. But it's still very good!

Adnams Broadside (Bottle, 6.3%) Aroma: Strong malts, cocoa, berries, roasted nuts, smoky. Appearance: Dark red, light carbonation, dense white head. Taste: Plum, cherry, cocoa, mixed dark berries, currants, raisins, roasted coffee, caramel, mild nutty notes, charred wood, malts. This is one of my favourite strong ales. It's also got the added benefit of adding warmth during the colder weather without it knocking you back with bitterness. A solid strong ale.

jamestulloch (5126) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - OCT 27, 2018
Bottle from Waitrose. Clear ruby/brown body with a beige head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of smoke, milk chocolate, subtle spices and dates. Flavour of sultanas, earth, brown bread and treacle. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. A classy beer. Liquid bread.

BeerViking (5927) - Brentford, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 17, 2018
Deep dark brown with a fine tan crema, it looks more the part of a brown ale. Aromas of toast, treacle and hops give way to a rich, heavy and bitter-sweet body, all roasted malt and dark fruitcake, lightened by hints of milk chocolate, dry hops and an alcohol warmth. Delicious, and rather better than the draught version.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2018 On tap en La buena pinta. Cerveza bastante normal, maltosa y poco aromática, no creo que repita.
