Bottle or keg - If you've had the cans, rate them under "Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier - unfiltered".

“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Typical lager beer, dominated by grassy hops, quite bitter throughout, but still very smooth. I did not sense many aromas while drinking, due to the large head and stable foam, but clearly smelt the smoke in the glass, as soon as it was empty. It is a shame the smell did not come through earlier.

Draft sample. The beer is a clear yellow with a white head of foam. Lightly smoky and a little sweet. Lighter body and medium carbonation.

From In Bavaria hefe glass. At lunch, with rice soup + pescada. The smoky touch is well adjusted, not strong enough to saturate but enough to give it character. However, I miss a bit more carbonation, it feels a bit too bland

500ml bottle from За разБИРАчи, Ruse, drunk at home on a cool sunny September afternoon. Pours clear with a thin fluffy head that soon settled, heavy lacing and persistent rising carbonation. Pale straw in colour. Aroma of honey-smoked ham, cereal and stale bread. In the mouth, very slight sourness, minimal sweetness but rising a little through the palate, no alcohol presence, thin texture - but not too watery, flavours broadly consistent with the aromas - but lighter, with a short, crisp mildly bitter finish. Overall, lightly smoky, crisp and refreshing - pretty good.

The last of my D&H weekend and this is kinda cheating since could be listed as smoked and not Helles skewing my results. Looks like the last six brews very clear gold with smaller white head. Nose is campfire and grassy. Tastes of the hammy smoke they are known for and also some grass and light lemon. Crisp palate finishes smoky.

500mL bottle. Pours clear yellow with a moderate, foamy off-white head. Aroma is smoke, grass, light bread, and grain. Taste is smoke, grass, light spice, light ham, a little oak, and some grain. Light body. Moderate carbonation. Crisp mouthfeel. The smoke overwhelms the helles elements a bit, but it is still an enjoyable beer.

500ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy gold-yellow with a large, frothy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves plenty of lace. Aroma of toasted bready malt, grain, grass, smoke and floral hops. Sweet flavour of grainy malt, bread, smoke and honey with a dry, bitter hop finish. Light to medium body with a watery texture and soft carbonation. Clean and easy drinking, an excellent Helles.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with a white head. Aroma of smoke - wood, bread and grains, slight hoppy - grassy and green. Woody and smokey, grains quite hoppy, slihgt dusty.
