COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in Tacuba, Mexico in 1925, Modelo Negra, formerly Negra Modelo, is a medium-bodied lager with slow-roasted caramel malts brewed for a rich, smooth taste. Brewed longer to enhance its flavors, Modelo Negra redefines "Dark Beer" because it is exceptionally drinkable and remarkably smooth. This Munich Dunkel-style Lager is brewed with galena and super galena hops as well as caramel malt, black malt and two and six row malt barley. These ingredients are meticulously brewed together to give Modelo Negra that bright, rich, amber hue and that iconic, medium-bodied flavor.

Ein Bier das anfangs süß-pickig ist und dann komisch bitter wird. Brauche nich nicht mehr.

Pours a dark, clear brown with a thick white head. Aroma of yeast and CO2. Tastes like a wheat beer with slight dark notes. Palate includes nuts, bread, very mild earth tones. Somewhat watery. Altogether, far better than I expected and not a bad beer in the slightest.

UPDATED: SEP 7, 2018 A highly misunderstood beer. The problem it's beer snobs try to compare it to European Dark Lagers, etc. Try drinking those after working all day in 100+ degree heat and 75% or higher humidity, and the problem should become immediately apparent. This is a bear that manages to have good buddy, great flavor, a wonderful year yeasty aroma, while still actually being refreshing under the punishing tropical sun. Something your average Euro Dark fails utterly at. Instead of commission it to European Dark Lagers (though I found the short lived Guinness Black Lager similarly pleasing), think of this as a summer Lager that actually had flavor, substance and body. Instead is the thin, sour pisswater of a Corona, or even most old works Lagers and Pilsners, this has all the drinkability of a traditional lager or even a wheat beer, but with a much deeper and more complex flavor palette, without resorting to overt sweetness or bitterness to try to prove its credentials. For similar beers, try Bohemia Oscura, or the new and delicious BocaNegra Dunkel.

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2018 Amber color with tan head. Crisp aroma, slightly bready. Moderately hoppy bitter flavor dominates.

330ml bottle. Pours a deep brown. Light malty nose with yeasty notes. Light body with malty notes and the same cleanness I would expect from a lager.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2018 Thirty years ago, when I lived in Texas, Negra Modelo was our beer of choice. That beer is gone. 'Modelo Negra' is a pale imitation of its predecessor. Negra Modelo was a black lager with flavor; Modelo Negra is an insipid tasting amber with no more character than the run-of-the-mill Modelo lagers. Times do change.

Bottled. Dark clear body, big beige head. The aroma has sweet corn, the flavour is spicy and malty.

Bottiglia.

MNAle (317) - Minnesota, USA - JUL 31, 2018
Dark amber color with a off-white to tan head, that sinks to a ring. Foam clings a bit. Aroma of biscuit, faint caramel, toasted. Ok flavor with hints of dark fruit, toasty, and slightly bitter. Feel is smooth, but thin. Better than expected taste, with a dry and somewhat bitter finish. Odd aftertaste. Overall, better than expected for a commercial Mexican lager.
