COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The Old Rasputin brand image is a drawing of Rasputin with a phrase in Russian encircling it—A sincere friend is not born instantly.

Deep ruby-brown colour with a small tan head. Rich, complex aroma with notes of chocolate, coffee, vanilla and liquorice. Flavour is equally complex - bittersweet chocolate, roasty coffee, whiskey & brandy, and a warm, bitter finish. Remarkable stuff.

Nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said. Absolutely delicious. Only thing that would make this stout perfect is a more dry dark chocolate finish.

Is this a beer or a powder keg? Powerful enough to blow your socks off, beauty enough to frame and tasty enough to keep the whole empire placated.

Theres a lot of good quality imperial stouts out there now, so this one is tough to review as far as differences. Basically a stronger, heavy chocolate, roasty stout. My first sample from North Coast, and I am liking it. Near black appearance. Tastes of chocolate, coffee, maybe a little toffee and/or caramel. All kinds of sweet stuff, but also has a slight bitter/hoppy side to it. Only bought a single to try out, but will be buying a 4-pack soon.

UPDATED: APR 14, 2018

UPDATED: APR 7, 2018 Bouteille.

Well this was indeed a delicious Russian imperial stout that lives up to its hype. From the bottle, pours a faintly ruby-accented black with a long lasting full creamy khaki head, flawless. Moderately strong aroma of toffee and roasted malt. Both the aroma and the flavor are surprisingly "relaxed" for the style, with zero alcohol burn and a relatively non-complex profile of heavily roasted/charred malts that don't overwhelm the palate. There is also a distinct earthy English hoppiness in the background of the charred flavors. Exceedingly clean finishing, in fact this is the cleanest finish I could imagine for any imperial stout. It is also surprisingly light-bodied, probably making this the most sessionable R.I.S. I've ever experienced, although "sessionable" is hardly a word I ever thought I would use to describe this style. Overall a mild-mannered yet savory brew, something I would personally recommend to someone looking for an approachable introduction to this strong style.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2018 Akin to a beautiful drift on the racetrack: a magical balance of malt and hops, showing off its long finish of smoky, dark flavors enveloping on every sip..
