COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Old Chub is a Scottish style ale brewed with copious amounts of crystal and chocolate malts, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malts. While Dale's Pale Ale ("the best-tasting canned beer I've ever had," according to many brewers and beer experts) is a showcase of both hops and pale malts, Old Chub is a celebration of malts. The cola-colored beer features a dense, tawny head, a creamy mouthful and flavors of caramel, chocolate and lightly roasted malt. Complex and rich, it finishes with a whisper of smokiness that calls to mind a fine single malt scotch. Old Chub weighs in at 8 % alcohol by volume.

Caramel, toffee, herbs, chocolate and bread in nose. Pours mahogany with off-white head. Taste is sweet with caramel, toffee, bread, mild chocolate and hebs. Low bitter finish, average carbonation and body, well hidden ABV. Overall quite good, easy to drink.

9/9/18 With A watching Greatest Showman after driving back o philly today. Poured into a tumbler. Just about opaque dark brown with a quickly fading sticky head. Nose is deep dark and malty. Not too powerful but smells good. Taste is similar. Lots of deep and rich malty flavors. Caramel, chocolate and maybe some smoke. Tastes kind like a doppelbock. Moderate sweetness without much bitterness at all. Palate is pretty thick and heavy with plenty to chew on. Leaves some rich malty sweetness behind. Overall, this is quite a tasty beer. Have only had one other of this style but I like this one a lot.

2016 vintage.
Into a snifter at cellar temperature. Deepest, darkest ruby copper body. Head is tight, tannish and settles in for the length to remain a fine lace upon the glass. Ooooh, wow, that aroma. Peaty, thick and rich malt driven nose. Notes of marzipan, vanilla bean, prunes and dates in syrup, mace and nutmeg spice, peat, loam and a hint of bourbon barrel - this aroma is sultry, seductive and a look into the flavour to come. On the palate it smooth, soft and somewhat drier than the rich, sweet nose. Peaty with light smoke and ash. Marzipan and a touch of roasted nuts - almond!? - fit in nicely. The bourbon barrel notes are dominant - though not added to the beer (a fantastic nuance!). Savoury, dried fruits like prunes, dates and bitter raisins. Body is medium with BIG flavour. A note of dusty, dark chocolate late. Ample spice comes through; quite peppery and earthy. Ridiculously long which is well welcomed. The 8.0% ABV shows giving it a lovely winter warmth to the swallow. Big fruit, big malt, big complexity. This has aged well. A fantastic Scotch Ale!! (12fl.Oz, Canned 11/02/16, Luckies Liquor, East Vic. Park)

24 June 2018. At Tilburgs Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke.
Clear dark brown, reddish, with a lasting, small, foamy, beige head; little lacing. 'Warm' aroma of milk chocolate, caramel, mocha, banana & plum, kahlua, raisin, fruit liqueur, candied dates, roasted peanuts, some sherry or whisky. It tastes medium to heavy malty sweet, caramel & plum notes, and light roasted bitter, countering a possible cloying sweetness; accents of nuts & dough in the back. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering malty sweetness & a punch of warming liqueur, perhaps even brandy, alcohol. Full body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation. So deep, rich and tasty - love it!

Body lighter than other scotch ales I’m familiar with. While it’s a good tasting, very drinkable, beer, I was a bit disappointed.
