"There’s no question that Stone Imperial Stout is revered among enthusiasts," states Stone CEO Greg Koch. "I know, because I’m one of ’em and I can hardly wait for it to come out each year!" Some may think that a late Spring release for a special brew of this sort is an odd time for it to come out onto the market. Koch justifies this with the rationalization "What better than a warm time of year to come out with a brew that tastes great as it warms up!" That’s because "ice cold" is certainly not the appropriate way to serve the beer. Nearly without exception, the darker, richer and more alcoholic a brew is, the warmer the serving temperature should be. The Stone Imperial Stout label describes the brew as being "intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate...expect this mysterious brew to pour like used motor oil and taste even heavier! Serve at 55 degrees."

Bottle shared with blankboy, HogTownHarry, jerc and tupalev - courtesy of HogTownHarry. 2006 vintage. Deep black colour with a quick tan head. Dark sweet aroma - roasted malt, molasses, vanilla, coffee, dried dark fruits. Smooth mouthfeel, very nice. Flavour of coffee, tobacco, bitter chocolate, sharp hops, and a bit of smoke. Could use a bit of aging to round out the edges, but it’s still pretty frickin’ nice!

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2018 Stone Imperial Stout is an awesome brew. I try to sip and savor but it's just to damn good. As you would expect from and imperial Russian Stout this thing pours a thick and dark a motor oil that is 20k miles over due for a change. Doesn't taste like motor oil though as this brew has wonderful notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol.

UPDATED: APR 21, 2018 Aromat wyraźnie utleniony w stylu sherry. Mało czekolady czy kawy, ale i alkoholu. Więcej melano. Barwa czarna, nieprzejrzysta. Piana jasno brazowa, drobno pecherzykowa, obfita i dosyć trwała. W smaku umiarkowana slodycz złamana kwaskowością. Nuty miodowe, sherry, świadczące o utlenieniu. Mnóstwo melano, palonosci i alkoholu. Piwo wyraźnie nie wytrzymało lezakowania. Goryczka znikoma, palona. Pełnia powyżej średniej, umiarkowane wysycenie i miodowo-melanoidynowy finisz. Słabe, ciekawe jak smakuje świeże?

Spring 2009 Release (10.5% ABV)- I heard great things about this IPS, so was dang eager to sample it and compare it to my favorite and top rated IPS, which is Stoudts Fat Dog Stout. They are very similar in many ways, yet this may have a slight edge in flavor. Maybe a little more robust, but can't quite give it a 10 for taste, as it is quite possible there is something better somewhere in the world. Until I find it, this is right up there with Fat Dog as my top IPS. Next time I try this though, gonna look for a Spring 2008 or let it age about a year - 18 months.

22 oz bottle 2014 vintage. Roasted hazelnuts and deep Molasses. Bit of burnt brown sugar. Pretty dense and not many flaws. Great.

Kita (2407) - Koper, SLOVENIA - MAR 29, 2018
Bottle, 0.65l. Aroma of roasted malt, dried fruit, wood and sherry. Pitch black color with medium creamy light brown head and nice lacing. Taste starts with sweet and rich roasted malt and chocolate, follows by licorice, mouthfeel is spicy and warming alcoholic, while finish is medium grassy bitter. Full body, thick texture and average carbonation in palate. Getting imperially stoned with it...

2015 bottle. Basically a typical imperial stout, rather dry, some roasted, acidic coffee, alcoholic, unpleasant notes in the end.

22oz. bottle. 10.8% abv. Poured black, thick dark tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla. Taste was bittersweet, roasted coffee, alcohol, licorice, vanilla, dark chocolate.

On tap near black with red hints and a tan head. Aroma of coffee, smoke, licorice and chocolate. Taste is medium sweet and heavy bitter.

Piana z drobnymi oczkami powoli opada, zdobi szkło. Kolor czarny. Aromat ubogi klasyczny czekolada, słody palone, karmel, lekka owocowa słodycz, alkoholowy akcent. Smak to samo, paloność, czekolada, kawa, karmel, melanoidyny, suszone owoce, lukrecja, szczypta tanin, lekko alkohol. Ciało średnie, słodycz nie za wysoka odpowiednia, goryczka wyczuwalna nie przesadzona, pije sie dobrze. Klasyk RISowy bez wad i wodotrysków. Bardzo Dobre nie czepiam się ale spodziewałem się sporo więcej.

A 22 fl. oz. bomber, 2016 release, bottled on 23rd March 2016. Poured into a snifter glass. It was black in colour with a just under one finger brown head that dissipated fairly quickly to a ring around the glass while leaving only sparse lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee with some sweet dark fruit, plum, black currant and cherries. Tastes similar to the aroma with roasted malts, lightly burnt smokiness, dark chocolate and coffee, followed by dark fruit sweetness of plum and prunes. Creamy, smooth, full bodied with light carbonation. Overall, great aroma and nice taste at the beginning, but perhaps feeling that it was a bit too sweet towards the end, after finishing a full bomber by myself. Alcohol is well hidden though, and it’s a great bottle to share.
