COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007. Brand acquired solely by Charles Wells in 2011.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Really nice beer. Rich and malty with a spicy touch. One of my personal favorite beers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Strong banana notes not really for me. Plus a bit thick and stouty in mouth. Is nice just not my cup of tea

A couple of bottles split with my father in law. This was an interesting experience -- I drank two bottles, and they were quite different. The first was sweet and a bit boozy, perhaps a bit more so than I’d expect for a strong ale. The second was much more balanced with enough hop aroma to make it taste like an English IPA. It was so strange I had to do a double check of the bottles. Hard to rate because of the different experiences, but they both shared a classic English malt and yeast flavor profile.

Bottle, Tesco online. Amber, bright, white foam. A bit darker than I remembered...Charles Wells difference. Lovely rich balanced beer, sweetish bready malt with a hint of caramel and a robust spicy hop, hint of orange. Medium finish. Pretty good.

Bottle, 1 pint. Clearish orange with a frothy tan head and lively carbonation. Salty, grainy aromas of barley, biscuits, light toffee. Medium to robust bodied, fizzy carbonation. Dry and astringent. Lightly sweet, medium bitter. Malty and hoppy flavors into a stinging bitter finish.

Bottle. Bottled exactly 4 years ago! Still drinkable. Light copper, clear. Slight carbonation. Aroma delicate, floral, malty. Quite sweet, slightly sour. Malty. Bitterness stealthy and nice, provides a good lingering finish. Good mouthfeel. Too sweet for me, but quite drinkable nevertheless.

Bottle. Light amber colour, large head that stays quite long, decent lacing. Aroma is clean malt, herbal hops, a bit of citrus. Medium bitterness. Well balanced, good one.
