COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

adamnowek (4908) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - APR 6, 2019
UPDATED: APR 6, 2019 Very slightly hazy. Light golden colour. Small, creamy head. Aroma is just a pine tree. Taste is aggressively bitter hops with some pine needles. A great beer but hardly a gold standard.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2019 Pours Golden with a nice head. The perfect balance between malt and hops. Still the perfect IPA

UPDATED: MAR 13, 2019 Yep, this stuff is for real, and it's not even all that expensive at that. It's hoppy, balanced, slam-able, and yet nuanced and intricate. I'd recommend it for aficionados and newbies alike, in its approach-ability and easy to notice qualities.

oobawa (2677) - Tennessee, USA - FEB 14, 2019
UPDATED: FEB 14, 2019 Striking how different this pint is from the Younger; nose is like sticking your schnoz into a baggy of fresh nugs, dank and pungent. Taste pushes the classic West Coast grapefruit and pine, backed up by earth and weed, and the finish brings a formidable bitterness lasting long into the fade. Way too easy to drink for an 8% beer. Delicious.

HKdIPA (1003) - HONG KONG - FEB 4, 2019
UPDATED: FEB 4, 2019 Bottle 010819 - so should be quite fresh? - from Bottlecraft in SD at home in HK on CNY eve. Had years ago in SF on tap but don’t really remember. Gold-yellow pour with thin white fuzzy head. Aroma is pine-citrus with some faint mango and biscuit, not as pronounced as expected. Taste is big bitter west coast IPA - pine and citrus mainly, grapefruit zest, light malt backbone of biscuit and bread. Fine fizzy carbonation makes for a smooth palate. Bitter bite at the end that lasts. Very very well executed double IPA but hype is such that it’s hard to live up to it. Would get again though.

CacheManyHose (905) - HONG KONG - FEB 4, 2019
UPDATED: FEB 4, 2019 Drank the night before CNY 2019 after Matt made steamed fish and dou miu — bottle he bought back from San Diego! Pours a clear orange-golden with a fine foamy white head. Smells of light orange, mango, banana, lemony fruity esters, medium booze and a bit astringent, pine. Taste is resin bitterness, big and stony, sweetish pale malt and grain, a little leafy and pepper spice in the finish. Body is smooth, round, slick but with a buttery soft carbonation. Very well executed classic West Coast style, lots of resin hop but refined and balanced by fruit/zest, malt, and a really smooth body. Big and refined but very drinkable - not overly showy/doesn’t hit you over the head with hop.

furthur (1535) - Eagle River, Alaska, USA - JAN 24, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 24, 2019 Bottle from a friend, date on bottle 9/10/18, so not super fresh. Crystal clear amber beer, huge white head. Aroma pale malt and hint of citrus and mint. Taste malt, juicy orange, grapefruit. Palate medium rich, carbonation average. In this day of hazy ipa’s this still shows really well!

hrabren (2981) - Zagreb, CROATIA - JAN 17, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 17, 2019 Thanks Tony and Marín for bringing this, thanks Višnja for sharing. Last Zagreb tasting with Marko. For now. Clear golden, small white head. Lightly to moderately hoppy. Tropical, melon, mango, banana, juicy. Light bitterness, malts underneath, light hoppy flavours. Light body, drinkable, easy, lasting but light finish. Not impressed.
