Robinsons purchased Hartleys Brewery, Ulverston on the 26th July 1982, adding 56 public houses to the existing Robinsons estate. Hartleys Brewery can be traced back to the middle of the 18th Century with XB as a recipe first brewed by Hartleys head brewer Eric Simpson in 1949.
Although the brewing of the Hartley’s brands was relocated to Robinsons Unicorn Brewery, XB is still to the original Hartley’s recipe. The old Hartley’s brewing equipment is still in use at the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham.
XB has become a traditional part of life in this beautiful part of the world. Cask conditioned to the time – horned manner, it is famed for its rich body and is a smooth bitter ale with a subtle tang of malt.
