Nelson Wines

Small corner shop focusing on wine and beer, with a very good selection of Belgian and British stuff and a handful of German and USA stuff. Got an unusual Blaugies beer and few other bits and bobs. Has a small collection of spirits bit I did manage to get the owner to dig out a slightly older bottling of Four Roses single barrel which was cool. Owner was friendly and helpful too and prices were very competitive. Very much an old school shop compared to the new breed of craft beer outlet, but still worth dropping by for a visit.

Small shop with a large selection. Easy to reach by bus from Wimbledon station or walk from South Wimbledon station. The owner is friendly enough, will speak when spoken to and give recommendations when asked. The focus is mainly on local stuff, which is good, and Belgian classics, which is also good. Also a rather large selection of German beers, but many of them past best before date when I was there. Also has wine and booze, but I never touch that stuff. A small selection of snacks and a couple of fridges filled with crappy lagers.

The good part: Reasonable prices and good selection of Belgian sours from Cantillon, Hanssens, Giradin, Boon and Oud Beersel. Also a couple of fresh Kernel IPA’s and pale ales which is always a treat, and some Belgian classics like Orval, De Ranke and Fantome again at fair prices.
The bad part: Freshness. Many bottles past best before date and few fresh ones. Few American beers and no IIPA’s or imperial stouts. Some Dupont would be a nice addition to the Belgian selection. All in all a good place to pick up sours and Orval for the fridge and try out a couple of other bottles if anything looks interesting.

Love this place. Discovered it recently and has quickly become my local source of bottled beer. Incredibly friendly owner who is always ready to chat about his stock and what he’s planning to bring in. Cramped, yes, but I think that adds to the appeal of the place. Good range of UK and European beers. Not so strong on American bottles. Incredibly good value IMO.

Decent beer store. I wasn’t sure whether this store was still open as there is no website. I got there at about 6:10pm and it wasn’t open. Phoned the number and the guy said he was on his way. Beer selection isn’t bad - mostly Belgian and British. Mostly low ABV British offerings. I saw a few Kernels, Moor, Hardknott. I bought Delirium Nocturnum and Arbor Ales Impy Stout. There was one Mikkeller, a couple of standard American beers, a couple of Italian craft brews. Prices were OK but no bargains.

Nelson Wines is a cramped shop filled ceiling to floor with bottles. The UK selection is pretty strong, with a number of UK micros represented that I hadn’t realised were bottled. The German and Belgian selection is quite good, too. Don’t go there expecting anything interesting from the US or Scandanavia, you’ll be disappointed! On my last visit, I was able to score some cool French craft beers that I had never heard of. All in all, a very nice place. I would visit often if it wasn’t so far South!

I read about this place and wanted to have a look for myself. A bit out of the way in south London but not a bad trip for me personally. Just a short walk from South Wimbledon Station on the Northern line. When I got there the shop was closed (it was a Sunday, a lot of small shops are closed). I called the number on the building to see what the hours were. the man who answered (the owner, Tom as I later found out) quickly opened up shop for me to come in. Great selection of Belgians, and British micros. A nice section of German beers and small but good selection of the US beers that are generally available in the UK. I found there to be a very decent selection gueze and lambics. The Prices were very, very good and I had a hard time deciding what to get. Tom, was a very friendly guy and before I left we had a nice chat about some of the beers he should be getting in amoungst many other things. Also, a nice selection of Scotch and other spirits, I didn’t even look at the wine but it was there. I will be back

Nelson Wines has to be one of best kept-secrets of the London beer scene. I visited it for the first time yesterday and was both surprised and delighted with what was on offer. It is a fairly regular looking off-license from the outside, which holds a bounty of Belgian and British beers (as well as some German, US and Czech stuff). In particular it had a good selection of trappist and lambic offerings. What made it even better was the value, which has to be the cheapest in London (£2.79 for Girardin Black Label anyone?). Another good offer is the buy 12 beers get 10% -off deal. The owner, who has been there since 1985 was very helpful and knowledgeable. Well worth the journey outside the centre!

Weird place. You’d never guess they had the range they do from the outside. One of those places where you’re almost certain to stumble across some dusty rarity at the back of some shelf. For instance they had some 4 year old Hofbrouwerijke beers when I was there, but not knowing how they age I left them be. Plenty of Belgian, German and UK stuff. Prices seemed good, but everything seems cheap in the UK these days.

Probably one of the best value beer shops in England apart from Beermerchants.com A fantastic range. A substantial amount of UK craft beer. A good representation from Germany but not as many as Kriss Wines. An excellent Belgiun and UK selection had me wanting to return for more. Could do with some more beers from the US but an excellent competitor to Utobeer. Cool old rocknroll vinyl being played on the inhouse record player. Great Aladdin’s cave.

Just thought I’d add a rating in here as there hasn’t been one for a while. So I wasn’t even sure if it was going to be there... the shop is still there, and still opening at 6 on weekdays. I didn’t count the bottles but there is still a brilliant beer selection from the British Isles (lots of bottle conditioned, and several more obscure), plenty from Germany and Belgium too with almost everything you’d expect and lots you wouldn’t. More choice than I’ve seen in most places in the UK. Well worth travelling south along the Northern Line for a beer in the Sultan and a top up on some interesting bottles.
