I was impressed, nice bottle shop. Talked with the owner for a bit, he showed us around, everything is very organized. Awesome cooler full of Surly and lots of local stuff. Make-a-six was a great selection, we built a couple of sixers. Wish I had more time and money, could have spent our vacation funds there. If we go back, I'll be sure to stop by again.

One of the better bottle shops I've found for singles. Looks small from the outside, but they use the space well and there's a walk-in cooler not visible from the street. Beer is tucked towards the back, but there are lots of selections. A few vintage selections. The walk-in only has a few bombers but a lot of 6 packs. I easily picked out 15 bottles and left another couple dozen ticks behind. A tad bit pricy. Street parking. Staff was helpful but a tad bit surly. Sendik's across the street has a sign advertising their craft beer selection, so this could be a 1-2 punch, but it looked like they were closed so I didn't stop in. Overall, good stop and I'll be back.

Worth a visit. They don’t have a huge selection, but, unlike most stores that have a "by the bottle" offering, they have a lot of the good stuff by the bottle, like Bell’s Expedition Stout. Pricing is reasonable, staff is knowledgeable, fun and friendly.

Small, somewhat cramped, space on Downer across from Sendiks. Deeper than it looks but 80% wine & liquor. Back wall plus a bit is beer related, and very little of it is macro. Interesting ecclectic selection. A section of singles, plus a section of bombers. Shrug? I found some stuff, but I would guess it is hit or miss, and there is probably some age on what I did get. If I was local, I could see stopping in as a normal rotation, but - possibly due to the space - there just is not a lot of stuff.

Nothing special here unless you know the staff. Don’t go out of your way.

Almost all of their offerings are available in singles, and the sales associates are very helpful and friendly in assisting customers. Not a huge location, but they have everything they can in their cozy caverns. Having a friend who lives four blocks from here, I make a point of hitting Downer whenever I visit Milwaukee.

Downer Wine and Spirits rocks. It is, without a doubt, true that they don’t have the biggest selection; the place is ridiculously cramped. The reason you come here is because 1) It’s on Downder Ave. and you like being there; 2) The small but well selected beer (and wine); and 3) Especially the knowledgeable staff. The workers/owners here always steer me to good drinks, and it’s just fun talking to them about beer and wine. It’s a treat to visit.

Dingy liquor store on Milwaukee’s east side. Pretty cramped quarters with one whole wall dedicated to beer, mostly decent stuff. Bells, Victory, Founders, Allagash, etc. I was happy to find one lone bottle of Bells Batch 8000 and that made the trip worth it. Some domestics available as singles though you have to ask for prices on lots of them. Belgian 750s and domestic bombers share the coolers with six packs. Service was friendly and answered my pricing questions.

Since Murray’s closed, Northside Milwaukee has been in serious need of a worthy successor... Unfortunately, Downer Wine & Spirits isn’t it. I had heard good things by word-of-mouth, but something about this place left me slightly underwhelmed. Located across from the Sendik’s on Downer, this small shop manages to stock quite a few beers, in the little space available (much of the space is devoted to wine an spirits). There are about 8 cooler doors worth of craft six-packs and large singles, and a very small shelf for mix-and-match singles, plus a few 12-packs stacked in the aisles. The selection was pretty good, and I did find Lagunitas’s Lumpy Gravy (which I hadn’t seen anywhere else up to that point), but the selection was far from exemplary. In addition, I just didn’t get the feeling that this place would stock something new the minute it came out, the way that Murray’s did. So, although Downer Spirits offers some nice beers, it certainly isn’t a destination to travel to.
