Visited it occasionally from September 2016, to Feb 2017 during my stay in Newcastle. When compared to other pubs in the city this has to be my favourite due to the good selection, great service, food events (haven't had the chance though), and a very local atmosphere with quiet and crowded times. Amazing views. The pub cat was the cherry on top. Hope to go back one day

Visited in February 2016. A stroll along the river to Ouseburn from the city centre is highly recommended. It’s pleasant walk and, when you get to Ouseburn there are four very good pubs to visit. This was the first of them. Bullt right on the riverside with excellent views up & down the Tyne. It’s a very welcoming place, staunchly traditional in feel, presided over by friendly and enthusiastic staff and a rather proprietorial cat. However, unlike many more traditional boozers, the more modern is not neglected in the beer range. Almasty beers were well represented in wlle chosen range across a bank of seven hadpumps and a number of craft kegs. They have quite a few bottles but I didn’t need to resort to them. Fin is quite right about the pubby feel which is often lacking in the city centre beer bars. You get the best of both worlds here at the modest expense of a small reduction in the number of beers available. A splendid place that should not be missed.

It’s a pleasant walk along the Tyne from the city centre (we started from the Bridge Tavern) to the Free Trade Inn and once there, as it’s up on a bluff, there are stupendous views back along the river to the Millennium Bridge, especially after dark. The pub is functional but cosy, comfortable and home to a very relaxed elderly cat. It probably hasn’t been decorated for a while as there are genuinely tobacco stained walls, evidenced by a half moon patch in the original colour where a sconce had been removed. The service was a bit surly but the good music, the general feel of the place and the beer made up for that. There were six casks and some kegs with a decent choice overall. (Visited 9 February 2016).

Thus place was close to my rooms at the Cumberland Arms. Nice view of the river and the city from the large glass front windows or the outdoor tables across the street. Very solid tap list, both cask and keg, and a fridge full of lambic bottles. Amazing selection. Friendly staff, dog friendly as well. It is said that Jimi Hendrix hung out here, since his manager from the Animals was from Newcastle. Anyway, certainly the best list in the city.

We visited here Tuesday 30th September 2014. It is a short walk of about ten minutes from the millennium bridge to here and the pub affords great views back up the Tyne and of said bridge. It sits on a slightly elevated position standing out probably more than it ever did owing to what appears to be a relentless redevelopment of the local area; it looks a little dated but great for it. I never fully explored the pub but it seems a fairly straightforward layout with the centrally placed bar ahead off you and boards showing what is on off to the right if the bar. This is a very friendly pub, it looks it and it feels it, and it also really feels like a proper characterful place. I thoroughly enjoyed many of the excellent central bars/pubs; however few manage to have that real pubby feel. The beer choice was excellent here, and I mean excellent, with the likes of Buxton Double Axe Edge at 13.6% on keg and an Allendale DIPA at 7.4% (we had both of these) on handpump they are not afraid to go for it selection wise. The young chap and girl behind the bar were kind enough to reel off half a dozen or so good pubs in town to go to and both clearly knew there stuff as well. This would a great pub to have as your local, really enjoyed this place.

An atmospheric and lively pub with a great selection of beers and some interesting bottled beers. Probably the best place in Newcastle for lambics and sours. Check out the anti-Conservative party graffit in the toilets!

Great bar, incredible selection for location, can find most beer styles & has the biggest range of Lambic beers I’ve seen outside of Belgium. Cask is always spot on & keg limited but exciting. Very worn in building but that gyarentees a nice friendly clientel. Definitely worth the trip from the city centre Update... It gets even better, the addition of a new big bottle fridge means even more choice , including the best lambic selection I’ve seen in this country. The always impressive draft selection is especially good on this visit with SUmmer Wine, Tempest, EpiC Hand Drawn Monkey, Burning Sky & Pandafrog to name just a few

A favourite of mine for many a long year and it has come on leaps and bounds under Mick’s stewardship, in more recent times. Superb quality beer, in both cask and keg form, there’s always a real effort to push the boat out in terms of choice. Best pub view in Newcastle too, with a beautiful picture window looking along the Tyne back towards central Newcastle and it’s myriad bridges. Free jukebox, with the most eclectic choice of any I’ve ever seen, lovely pub cat and top pickled eggs!! An absolute must on a vista to one of the UK’s finest beer cities.

One of the better options for ale in the city. Any trip to the Tyne Bar should probably include a stop here and vice versa as this pub sits on the hill above it. The pub itself is somewhere between Bohemian and well-used in style with a bar that welcomes you as enter and a slightly larger drinking area behind this that includes an open fire to warm you up. There’s plenty of real ale choice here too and you’ll find some good craft brews at most times as the sourcing of beers for this place is fantastic.

Well worth seeking out on a trip to Newcastle, just a short walk along the quayside. A good range of well-kept beers served by informative and enthusiastic staff. Great views too.
