Cross Keys

Attractive corner pub building facing the tram lines which dissects this part of the city centre from the Lace Market area. Pleasant traditional styled appearance with several real ales available on the bar, although disappointingly nothing new for an out of town visitor like me when I frequented here.

Visited in 2012. Thought I’d put all my reviews from that trip in but obviously I hadn’t so apologies for the lateness. A nicely refurbished Victorian pub close to the Lace Market area. The feel is airy and woody. Had a somewhat more upmarket vibe than some of the city centre boozers although that may not be the case on Friday & Saturday nights. A bit of a foodie slant - although the restaurant is upstairs. Opens for breakfast. Beerwise it’s three or four from Navigation and three guests, which may be reasonably interesting. Worth dropping in for the Navgation beers if you don’t fancy the walk out to the Trent Navigation (where you’ll get more).

As a pub, it was OK, with nice seats and a range of Navigation beers always on, which are perfectly reasonable. A bit of a townie/city centre type place on my visit though, with loads of ’casuals’ just back from watching Forest. Not essential.

The Cross Keys is an elegant mid to late Victorian pub near the Weekday Cross, Nottingham’s original market place. It’s been nicely restored and keeps a traditional feel despite having been opened out. It opens at 8am (9am on Sundays) and is a good spot for a leisurely breakfast that’ll set you up for the day, or you can just watch the world go by or read the morning papers in a comfortable leather armchair. Around the walls are some interesting black and white photographs of Nottingham by a local photographer and down a few steps there’s another pleasant room presided over by a painting of Brian Clough posing as Byron. The 8 taps had some interesting beers, including three from the Navigation brewery, which was a completely new find for us. (Last visited 16 July 2012).
