I took a nice stroll from Devil’s Den through the markets and the mayhem of Pat’s & Genos to get here. Great neighbourhood pub that although slightly worn inside it’s bursting with character. The tap selection brings a good mix of local breweries and others. Good deals on some of the bottles. Friendly staff and service was great even when busy. Just a really good eclectic mix of folks can be found here. Well worth a stop.
Visited late on 04/03/15. Cool, grungy pub located in South Philly. This place was boisterous, rammed with locals. The bartenders were blasting Melvins for the duration of my visit, so high points for ambiance. The tap list was pretty fun. A bunch of Russian River sours were available on draught for high prices. I opted for more reasonable pours from Victory and Troegs. Bottles were available too, but nothing really jumped out. Overall, I found this place to be a great hangout. If I lived in Philly I’d make this a regular stop. Recommended.
Stopped in here earlier tonight for the 7th Anniversary Party. Not my first time at the POPE but it was my first time eating here, figured it is time to write up a review on it.
Every time I have come here the atmosphere has been good. It feels like you are drinking in a basement bar with tons of people from the neighborhood mixed with a bit of outsiders like myself. All of the events I have gone to here have been well run and moderately attended for some reason. Service has been pretty good on my visits. I have had to wait for some beers but for the most part it has been good. Quality is pretty high, they use correct glasses and offer solid food.
Selection has been solid on all my visits. They have all the bottles listed above the bar in chalk. You can definitely find some hidden gems on there if you look hard enough. Tap lists on my visits have been amazing, but there is usually an event going on so take that with a grain of salt. Got my first food tonight, a burger, and it was cooked perfectly and the side of fries were excellent. Prices are a little high on some of the bottles and drafts but all in all its pretty reasonable.
Overall an awesome neighborhood pub in the heart of south Philly. I have, and will return in the future.
Ambiance was a little hard to gage just because it was a Founders event but it seemed like a nice corner pub, albeit a little cramped. Good, friendly and speedy service from the wait staff. Lots of taps and they seem to get the good stuff pretty often. Food was good and greasy and the portions are nice and big. Great value since everything was just around $7-12. Definitely coming back when it’s less crowded.
Cool spot...a bit dim and divey with cool brick, hardwood, and stained glass...definitely not that modern. Parking is easy in the acme across the street. Nice draft selection and bottle selection. Small food menu but tasty and vegetarian friendly (pierogies were awesome and seitan cheesesteak was good too.). Helpful and friendly staff. Id go again.
My friend used to work here, and I wish I had took advantage of him after having visited this place. The selection of beer is excellent. The prices are actually rather cheap. Plenty of sours and rare beers in bottles. The draft list had stuff I had never seen before, but I live in New York, so that might be the reason. The waitresses were nice and rather attentive. I have no idea if they knew anything about beer. The nachos we got were pretty dope as well. I wish there were fewer TVs, but you can’t win them all. I forget what music was playing, but that probably means it was not excessively horrible.
Those who get to call this their neighborhood bar are truly a lucky bunch. Dark on the inside, medium noise level, awesome beers, super awesome staff. We stopped in after a Phillies game (beat the D-Backs 3-0) because I wanted to try some of the Troegs Scratch Series beers they had on. Wanted to sit at the bar but there were no open seats. Ordered from the barkeeper and he said no to grab a table and he’d transfer our tab to the waitress. Cool guy and quick with my beer. The waitress was real nice in a non-invasive and annoying kind of way. Came back at exactly the right time when I needed a new beer, got our food to us quick (it was only chips and salsa but still. Very tasty, I may add.). The place wasn’t super busy on a Saturday night but it was still kind of early. Seriously wish this was in my neighborhood as I would never leave.
Just celebrated 5 years ... Came highly recommended nice dark and old feel pub .... wooden seats, benches and brick walls, chalk boards told you what was on tap which was great ... a nasty tiny bathroom, but good service .... did not have the food and the beer list was diverse as well as the bottles .... They had pliny the elder on for 7 bucks and most taps were between 5 and 7 .... not a bad place to stop in and have a pint ... walking distance from pats and geno’s
