I was pretty disappointed in this place. There were 3 or 4 beers on tap (I had the Munich Dark) and they were very expensive: 80 Yuan for .5L (about $13 for a half liter). The food was also expensive and not very good. I had meatloaf with an egg and a pretzel. The meatloaf was essentially pork hotdog meat in loaf form. The pretzel was not fresh and didn’t come with the option of Mustard. If you are in Shanghai, go to the Boxing Cat instead for better food, beer and value.

That was the first of the Paulaner places in Shanghai (2 in Puxi and 2 in Pudong) which opened in 1997 in the French concession. Very nice interior with a small bar. Live music from the Philippines like in the other places. Beers were ok in the past. Recently The Weissbier has been poor and sour, hence do not visit the Paulaner places anymore. They serve bad beer consciously of the poor quality and charge more than 10 € per pint. Have not eaten, but would assume food is similar to other Paulaner places - huge with little taste.

This was a fun place to relaz, have a beer and drink German food. Much better than the Guilin location which was a complete joke.

Pudong location. Were here on a Sunday afternoon. Actually enjoyed my time here. Decent beers, large Bavarian-style beerhall and beergarden. Actually had a non-smoking section which was appreciated. Attentive service. Extensive menu of Bavarian food which was not bad considering this is China. I’d go back here.

A german style brauhaus with a view of the Bund. It was good with some dark beer, after mostly light Chinese beers

Brewgarden across the river from the Bund. View was fantastic even on grey raining january day. Sadly this was the best part of the visit, slow service, watered down beers compared to the german originals. Very pricy, but thats is proberly coming with the location. Didnt eat.

A couple of locations in Shanghai. The pudong location opposite the bund can be very pleasant. great view. xintiandi is rather plastic. beers are decent - .not very flavorful but a nice change from tsingtao. they have a lager ( bland) , dunkel and hefeweisen. seasonals such as octoberfest as well. pricing is quite high. 75 CNY ( us$10) for a glass, popular with expas and tourits. nice for a way to end an evening out in pudomg.

There are several Paulaners in Shanghai, we went to the Fenyang Lu. Had a live blues-rock band, good musicians but cruise ship vibe, playing only covers. Loud and boisterous crowd on the weekend was fun. The prices are outrageous, more expensive than germany. Food mediocre. Beer mediocre at best, not as good as it should be. I’d stick to Boxing Cat if I were in Shanghai again.

Visited the one on Pudong facing the Bund. I would say one of the best views from a biergarten I’ve seen. Totally packed on a friday evening, had to wait for a table, but it was worth it. All beers are german quality, the indoor restaurant is very authentic for all senses. Pretzels were a bit too crispy. Be prepared for mosquitos on a summer evening if staying outdoors.
