56 Traditional red-brick pub close to the railway arches, and somewhat lonely at the moment as the area begins a regeneration. The landlord told me the HS2 station will be next door in a few years time, assuming the pub remains a pub until that time. It does have a second income now as one of the rooms has been converted into an off-license by Wine Lord, carrying the same beers and ciders you’ll see at the dedicated shop on the other side of the city close to the Jewellery Quarter. This is also called Wine Lord. Quite worn with its decor it’s something of a trip down memory lane in this respect, with the large windows on both its mains sides providing plenty of light early in the afternoon, and the ’L’ shaped bar carrying four different ales, three of which were from the local area. The back room has a pool table. Unfortunately there’s no outdoor space here. I’ve given my rating for the pub only, but of course the selection would be higher if you include the off-licence selection. Some of the beers are in fridges so you could conceivably buy from in there and drink in the pub if the various licences’ allow this. |
54 Old style Birmingham boozer just down the road from The Woodman that I hadn’t been in for around 30 years, it still looks the same really. It was on one of our routes up to St. Andrews, but I remember it wasn’t keen on football supporters in those days. No beers of any note on this visit unfortunately. There seems to be a bit of a music theme going on. Not a pub to seek out really but could be doubled up with the Woodman and then on to Clink. |
68 Historic interior with old panelled bar and tiled walls. Jazz features. 6 sticks serving 5 good beers and doom bar! Nice. |
68 Lovely old building not too far out of the city centre. Great to see it open again. Good selection of beers and friendly service. A decent bottle shop alongside too. |
64 Nice to see this place reopened, any historic place like this is always to be cherished. A bit rough around the edges, hopefully this will slowly be addressed and a true gem will apear. |

66 A lovely old Victorian building still in bit of a state of decay having been closed for years. Re-opened December 2015. Nice tiles inside. More importantly 4 handpumps dispensing two local guest ales and 2 better known brands. Apparently they will in the future be offering CAMRA discount of 50p/pint. Aiming at trade from nearby University but at midday there were people of many generations. A welcome addition to the area. Situated a few yards from the Woodman by the impressive closed Curzon Street station. |
