74 2015 rating - Restaurant upstairs with 6 of the beers available. Interesting food menu but haven’t sampled it yet. The bar is downstairs, 12 keg beers, with a focus on overseas beers. Good can selection too. Bar snacks on NYE were pretty good and the 1/4 chicken fries is also a nice reasonably priced meal. As with the bat, staff are excellent. 90
2016 rating - Place seems to have been struggling for a while as evidenced by the fact the keg beers downstairs haven’t changed for around 5-6 weeks. Downstairs is also only open Thursday - Saturday now, from 4pm...sometimes. Has been 10pm on one visit. The rumour is a makeover into a tiki cocktail bar is imminent. |
78 Easily missed cellar bar & restaurant, one block down the hill from York Place. At times mostly a sunken cave restaurant, with another windowless, dungeon-esque restaurant in the second basement. At others a cool beer bar. A bit warm in summer but atmospheric in Edinburgh’s (longer) winters. The beers are a dapper selection of better turned out draft craft ales and lagers, with larger bottles too, some apparently chosen for their eye-watering prices. There is a small terrace just below street level. An Embra muss-try. |
78 Visited Marts 2016 with beery friends. Last stop after a great crawl. A short walk from city center. Very lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff and beers served in good condition. Good range on tap and nice selection of bottles as well.
Cosy place restaurent in ground level and a nice bar in the basement. Really a place worth visiting. |
74 Good addition to the beer pub scene especially in Edinburgh North. Large selection of kegs (6 upstairs and 12 downstairs) that change very regularly. Fridges seem filled with cans of known and unknown beers. |
82 Fairly new Bar / Restaurant with same owners as Hanging Bat. Restaurant upstairs, bar downstairs in basement. Restaurant nice, bar a bit dark & nightclubish, sort of dungeonish. Selection of beers excellent, service well informed. Didn’t get chance to try food. Good addition to Edinburgh Beer scene |
90 Recently opened a good selection in evening with only half the beers available before 4pm. No kids as yet but plan is to allow then in upstairs are. Deep fried Pickles are to die for |
90 Restaurant upstairs and bar downstairs, each with a different vibe. Upstairs having a focus on food, informal with a small selection of keg and bottled beer. The food upstairs is excellent, small focused menu but well executed. Downstairs is more what you’d expect from a pub. A dug-out cellar with exposed brickwork and fancy lighting. Beer selection is good, variety of local and imported keg and bottled beer, something for everyone. The bar snacks downstairs are also very delicious. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. |
