74 By the time you read this the Everyman will be closed. When I last visited on 7 June 2011 there were 26 days to go before the arrival of the wrecking ball. The farewell party, celebrating over 40 years of business, was on 2 July and there are plans to redevelop the site to accommodate a new playhouse and restaurant / bar.
Any review is now redundant but I thought it’d be worth recording my impressions for posterity and for future comparison. The Everyman was a very popular place with locals and visitors alike and there’s a lot of scepticism about whether this fine Liverpool institution will rise from the ashes to regain its former status as one of the places to meet over a good beer (or wine or fruit juice if that’s your preference) and a healthy bistro-style meal at a reasonable price.
Stepping down a tiled staircase, the main bar was in a long low basement with individual candle-lit tables along a white painted brick wall punctuated by little niches housing cacti. There were larger tables for groups wrapped around four pillars, the food serving area was next door and there was a third room hosting a folk club meeting when we were there (“Please wait for applause” said the sign on the door).
There were four handpumps in use serving “today’s bitters” (Brimstage Rhode Island Red, Cains Finest and George Wright Pipe Dream) alongside Westons 1st Quality Cider. They also had Guinness, Becks Vier, Hoegaarden, Stella and Fruh Kolsch. We had a delicious meal – linguine with Mediterranean tuna and linguine with pesto and roasted vegetables.
Fingers crossed that the replacement Everyman will recapture the cosy, relaxed atmosphere of the old place.

76 fantastic place! a lynchpin of the merseyside real ale scene. No trip to liverpool is complete without a trip to paddys place |
56 A restaurant in the basement of a theater. A dining room with seating in front of the bar. Had two or three real ales on my visit in July 2009. Tried a Blue Monkey Evolution. In good form. Food was very nice and healthy, with a lot of vegetarian alternatives. Good service. Lots of students and teachers from the nearby University. Handy for a beer and some food if you’re in the area. |
72 The best real ale place where to go when the other places are closed. Open till 2 am. A good place during daytime or later to have something to eat (20-21.2.09). |
