Visited in August 2019 on a 5-day Bamberg and surroundings trip with Caesar. Been back multiple times, loved the place, loved the beers, loved Kristina who did not only serve out the beers quickly but also spoke very good English and was in for a chat. Also, the other night it was crowded as hell and a seemingly random group of people asked whether they could sit at our table. It proved to be a perfect marriage. They were a group of rollercoaster enthusiasts I would describe em and they were even more autistic than me. Just a random group of people with the same hobby, all with different backgrounds. Rarely had a more interesting beer tasting night conversation-wise. Loved it, best night on the trip. Stories shared all across the table. And that while drinking half liters of "keep em coming" Schlenkerla Rauchbier. Good food as well. Priceless evening.
Visited august '18.
Ancient building in Bamberg, the place smells of rauchbier floor to ceiling. Beer is served in mugs from wooden caks, a bit disappointed they only had one variety, but then i managed to get a rauchweizen. The place gets quite packed so expect to drink on the street. A bit touristy maybe but that's the deal, it's a nice experience.
Must visit on my first trip to Bamberg. Not disappointed. Yes it is touristy, yes a lot of locals drink there as well. The street in front was packed with people drinking the beer they got served from the street sale. I went inside to sit down in a more quiter hall. Excelent quality of the beer from wooden cask.
Visited a lot of times, most times with my parents. And it is a must visit place every time I am in Bamberg.. latest visit was July 2019 just before heading for the train station to catch a train home. Super friendly and very welcoming atmosphere, nice food and the beer is super class.. They always have the marzen from wooden cask - world class.. and they do seasonals over the year, beers also lovely to drink.. go there.. I will for sure come by many more times..
How to review this place...a true smoked beer lovers pilgrimage which I purposely went out of the way for while traveling between Nuremburg and Frankfurt. Tucked in a row house type of building that is very unassuming if not for the green and black half timber structure. Inside is dull and dreary and made me feel like I went back in time 300 years. A bunch of small intimate rooms to choose from. Service was typical for German establishments. Efficient but nothing more. Food was of interest to me and I got the Bamberg Onion. An onion stuffed with minced pork. Actually very bland and disappointing, however, the mash potatoes and beer gravy were the best I've ever had. Wife had herb soup which was nice. The beer speaks for itself. The holy grail of smoked beer. I tried the Krausen and alcohol free beer here which were the only ones I haven't ever found in bottles in the US. Not my favorites but glad I got to sample them. In retrospect I wish I would've just stuck to my favorites. Ordered the beerschnapps too but the waitress just gave me a cheap generic shot instead. So glad I went but the experience didn't meet the hype I had for it. Perhaps I'll return one day and my visit was just not the right place and the right time.
Visited the 17th May 2019 - Nice beer place in the central area of Bamberg. Really crowded on the street where people are getting beer. It can be really complicate for passers-by. There is a small Biergarten inside. Beer from wood barrel is available for a good price. Not that there is a deposit for the glass (and when you want to return, you have to have the glass and the token that you received at the first order). Restaurant is around, you can have a sit only if you eat. Old fashionned restaurant with full wooden tables and chairs. Amazing. Menu is composed of local food with some special dishes on daily menu. Price is reasonable and food is fresh and well served. I recommended this place for any beer enthusiast. It's a must be place to visit once in life.
Awesome smoked beer , was looking to go to this place for years . You can have the Smoked Märzen on cask , which is really enjoyable .
The Eiche was also available when i went there , that was fantastic .
The Food is really good and the Prices for Food and beer are ridiculous cheap . Service is quick .
