Visited a lot of times, most times with my parents. And it is a must visit place every time I am in Bamberg.. latest visit was July 2019 just before heading for the train station to catch a train home. Super friendly and very welcoming atmosphere, nice food and the beer is super class.. They always have the marzen from wooden cask - world class.. and they do seasonals over the year, beers also lovely to drink.. go there.. I will for sure come by many more times..
How to review this place...a true smoked beer lovers pilgrimage which I purposely went out of the way for while traveling between Nuremburg and Frankfurt. Tucked in a row house type of building that is very unassuming if not for the green and black half timber structure. Inside is dull and dreary and made me feel like I went back in time 300 years. A bunch of small intimate rooms to choose from. Service was typical for German establishments. Efficient but nothing more. Food was of interest to me and I got the Bamberg Onion. An onion stuffed with minced pork. Actually very bland and disappointing, however, the mash potatoes and beer gravy were the best I've ever had. Wife had herb soup which was nice. The beer speaks for itself. The holy grail of smoked beer. I tried the Krausen and alcohol free beer here which were the only ones I haven't ever found in bottles in the US. Not my favorites but glad I got to sample them. In retrospect I wish I would've just stuck to my favorites. Ordered the beerschnapps too but the waitress just gave me a cheap generic shot instead. So glad I went but the experience didn't meet the hype I had for it. Perhaps I'll return one day and my visit was just not the right place and the right time.
Visited the 17th May 2019 - Nice beer place in the central area of Bamberg. Really crowded on the street where people are getting beer. It can be really complicate for passers-by. There is a small Biergarten inside. Beer from wood barrel is available for a good price. Not that there is a deposit for the glass (and when you want to return, you have to have the glass and the token that you received at the first order). Restaurant is around, you can have a sit only if you eat. Old fashionned restaurant with full wooden tables and chairs. Amazing. Menu is composed of local food with some special dishes on daily menu. Price is reasonable and food is fresh and well served. I recommended this place for any beer enthusiast. It's a must be place to visit once in life.
Awesome smoked beer , was looking to go to this place for years . You can have the Smoked Märzen on cask , which is really enjoyable .
The Eiche was also available when i went there , that was fantastic .
The Food is really good and the Prices for Food and beer are ridiculous cheap . Service is quick .
In winter time this is a comfortable place to visit as it is full of locals, getting a table is quite easy, and the service is good. Entering from the street, on the left is a small bar while to the right is the dining area which has church-like architecture (domed ceilings, etc) while a walk though the place offers more rooms with similar architecture, all adding to the ambience of the place. Food is Franconian-style and is reasonably priced. There are only three beers available - two "core" plus a seasonal with prices varying being €3.00-3.40 for the two main ones and €3.70-4.10 for the seasonal. I'm happy to have had a pleasant time on this my second visit.
3d August 2018. This place looks great! So old-fashioned, classic style. We just hopped in during the afternoon, so no food for us. We only wanted some small pints, samples perhaps; the waitress referred us to the bartender but this hipster-looking guy annoyingly told us it wasn't possible. As if you can't decide how much beer you tap in a glass... Only one "Kräusen" then and bye-bye!
What can I say about this place, I am a huge fanboy of their beer and it is in astonishing quality to be. The interior has a church vibe going on with a touch of museum. Great Bavarian service obv. zero vegan option but there is Bamberg Onion. They have their fare share of tourists and a gift shop even but none of that could lessen my giddy excitement to drink some of the best beer in the world in top condition in a cool church looking building. The door to the fancy toilet slides open automatically. I am being a typical hipster fanboy by loving it but I cannot help myself.
