Lets get the context right here. This is the Horn of Africa, not San Diego. The grain they grow in Ethiopia is for feeding people – remember Live Aid? They do not have spare fertile land for hops yet. So small breweries using 5-hl Kaspar Schultz brewery assemblages to make unfiltered helles and dunkeles have to import the two barley malts and Hallertau hop pellets from Germany, which makes selling them at just over a pound a pint (roughly US$ 1 for 16 oz) pretty bloody impressive. It may also explain why it is currently the only operation of its kind in Ethiopia. Yet it’s all here. Two house brews on draft in measures from 20cl to a 3-litre beer tower, plus in bottle just about every other beer made in the country that’s not a tej. Lots of seating indoors and covered hut-style areas outside, with a separate restaurant upstairs. Comfortably busy on a Saturday afternoon with a mixed sex young to middling local clientele and the occasional ex-pat or tourist. Too-Western food added onto fries and ketchup with a better option of various Ethiopian tibbs. Their ‘Berliner Weiße’ is a litre of Blondy with Campari.

Dark, very spartan looking place, quite stuffy as well. The food is not very inspiring and there are two brews they produce in house. I must note that it’s the only and therefore the best brewpub in Addis Ababa.

This place never ceases to amaze me. A german microbrewery close to Addis Ababa airport whch produces a couple of decent german style beers. They aren’t world class but are much better than anything else found in this country. Pizzas are good too. The only place to go in Ethiopia for beer.
