Sort of like what would’ve happened if Germany won World War II and taken over Taiwan. Imagine a German beer house with Taiwanese girls in Lederhosen serving German-style beer with mash-up of Taiwanese and German food. Throw in two retired gentlemen lounge singers from Belgium and Austria belting out Marlena Dietrich tunes and you’ve got a perfect picture of what this place like.

This is one of the weirdest brewpubs on the planet. It is kind of vaguely German beer-hall themed w/ all the waitstaff wearing lederhosen, including the women. Instead of the big picknick tables like you’d expect it has stately and large leather chairs all over the place and for some reason they were playing mariachi music in Spanish. On top of all this, the entire waitstaff had plastic face masks similar to the surgical masks that Asian people wear then they have colds only made of clear plastic. Every person on staff had one of these which combined w/ everything else was pretty much just mind blowing. The food was a similar mish-mash of mostly western food. I got a "pizza w/ German sausage" and it was like a flat tortilla w/ melted cheese on it and some pink sausages that tasted pretty much like ham and no sauce. It was good but, you know, not a very normal thing to serve at a German-themed brewpub. The beer was OK, middly brewpub stuff. There were four varieties, three regulars plus a seasonal but the sampler only came w/ the three regular beers. The service was pretty friendly and fairly attentive and I was able to get by fine w/ a few Chinese phrases and mostly speaking English. Pricing is about in line w/ most Western restaurants in Taipei so not too bad. Honestly, I put this as a must visit place but not because it’s good but because it’s so very unusual.

I visited this outlet from Le Ble d’Or on 4.2.2015. Very commercial place. They try to brew German beers, which are ok at the best. Waiters are dressed in Lederhosen, which looks quite funny. Interior is also very beer chain like, nothing special. Food (should be German) is better than at Paulaner, which is not too defficult. No need to come here.

Although this place does brew their own beer it is not meant for a beer enthusiast. This place is definitely meant to be more of a fancy western style restaurant with the beer taking a backseat to the food and ambiance. The costumes the servers were wearing were very strange and gave the place an almost comical feel but besides that the place is laid out nicely, kind of a three tiered beer hall. The service was excellent. Only three types of lagers available and two of those basically being pale lagers? What? The food was good but not worth the overly expensive price. Overall not a place I’d visit again.

Saw this as the top rated bar/restaurant in Taiwan and figured I had to try it out. They were sold out of the ’season’ beer but had three others to choose from Dunkel, Honey Lager and regular lager. I was surprised to see that they had, well only lager’s. Most places usually have one lager. But here, they had nothing but lager. The honey lager was good. I’ve never had one, but to be honest the honey flavor really showed in this beer. Of the three, that was to me, the best one they had. The Dunkel was ’okay’ and the light lager or ’regular’ lager was nothing special. All-in-all perhaps one day, Taiwan will lift this blocking of outside brewery’s from coming in or making it as difficult as it is for someone to come in a set up shop. Anyway, that’s my thoughts on the place...

Dimly-lit interior with dark wood floors. Dark grey ducting, plumbing and wiring. View of two copper brewing vessels adjacent to the lounge. Tables made of large wooden barrels. One flat-screen TV showing baseball (ESPN). Faux red brick walls. Mirrored bar back. Stainless steel bar without stools. Generic tap handles. Beer menu over bar. Four house beers. Mostly non-English-speaking bar staff wearing Bavarian outfits along with German music, including hats! Non-smoking environment! Food menu with major fried food line-up (some pizza and pasta). Lots of onion and pepper dishes of chicken and sticky rice. No chopsticks offered but no knives either! Appetizers from NT 150-250; Roasted Grille 250-350; Fondues & Soups ~250; Main Courses 250-450. Drink servings of 315, 500, 1000 and 2000 cl, from NT 120 to 360+.

There are a few locations of Le Ble d’Or in Taipei. The staff told me that by Taiwan law, they can’t sell for consumption in the same place they brew (does Georgia govern Taiwan?). This particular location is next to the IKEA store and part of a big walking mall area with lots of stores and restaurants. Mostly outdoor seating with tables/umbrellas and a small area that is covered by canvas. There is a small amount of bar seating. The menu has basic fried appetizers for about $4-7 and some "German style" offerings like pork knuckle, sausage plates, and beer-marinated beef stew. All entrees are about $6-12, with some exceptions. These are decent prices for a bar in Taiwan. Three beers on tap that they make at the brewery and truck in each day. The Lager, Hefe Weisse, and Dunkel (see my ratings for more info). Anywhere from a 1/3 liter to o5 liter can be purchased. Prices are about $4 for a 1/3 liter. There was an entertainer on the night that I went singing songs and playing his keyboard. Not bad. Overall, worth checking out just for the Hefe-Weisse and ambiance.
