Combining a northern German pilsener with a Schokobecher (a very generous ice cream sundae) isn’t perhaps the best of combinations, but on a hot July afternoon in this pleasant town on Fehmarn Island, it all worked out very well. Pleasant is a good word to describe Cafe Jedermann, and on a sunny day such as the one I visited, I had my option of a very nice outdoor patio, ice creams, teas, light meals and a couple of cold drinks. There are two beers on tap here, or Schneider Weisse in a bottle if you are desperate or easily satisfied. I started with a 0.5 litre of Krombacher Pils, served in its appropriate glass, and only 3.20 Euros (July 2011 prices). A smaller 0.3 litre can be had for 2.20 Euros. Krombacher’s beer mat has the amusing motto "Eine Perle Der Natur". It’s not a highly-rate pils, but it does the job on a hot day and gave this thirsty imbiber a lovely taste of golden Wuppertal goodness. Yes, I’m trying to be funny. Anyhow, the second beer on tap here is Duckstein (3.40 Euros for 0.5 litre, 2.40 for 0.3), which is an amber, slightly stronger, and more bitter treat. Yes, it’s easily the better of the two beers. I was informed that Duckstein "auf Buchenlolz gereift" or it is brewed/ripened in "Beechwood", which helps give it its distinctive flavour. To sum up, Cafe Jedermann is a fine cafe for ice cream related goodies and a couple of beers out in the summertime sun, a nice break while touring this scenic island.
