A staple in the beer cuisine world because its the place that started it all, but maybe a bit stale and old at this point. The menu felt old, the pairings were simple, the beer was older than it maybe should have been for stuff that’s supposed to be hoppy. I did leave full though, and the beer cheese soup was freaking amazing, as well as the ham hock. Could it use an update and the hand of a younger chef, sure, but is it worth a stop, yes. Eat here is f you’re stopping through St. Bernardus.

Was looking forward to this restaurant. I’ve browsed through the restaurants book before and it all looked quite delicious, and so did the beers paired with it. Unfortunately our visit was less satisfying.
Service was absent, only question asked was ’did you enjoy’ after every course. No attention whatsoever by any of the waiters.
The waiter was also very stressed out and had the irritating habbit of actually running around in the restaurant. Every time he passed by our table we had the impression the whole restaurant was shaking. Service was really unsatisfying.
Beerlist was very short, Watou’s beers, some macros and 1 cuvée hommelhof (blend of a witbier and hommelbier if i’m right, brewed at vaneecke) The beerpairing was not at all spot on. We even got an old bottle of chouffe with our dinner (BB2016, so i guess 2-3 years old), which had no interest at all!! I was hoping for some more local unknown beers... The old chouffe was just over the top... Also the beers were served really badly,
Food was great though! Just one big minor detail, we had 3 courses in 3h time, so we all left hungry. Such a shame.
Go there if you’re in the area and want to eat well, but don’t expect a good beer experience.
We went here in August 2013 with high expectations. But after the dinner we left gravely disappointed. The food was tasteless and uninspiring. The beer list was short and dull, dominated by low quality beers. This place obviously once was a herold for fantastic cooking with beer. It definitly is not so today. A place to avoid.
Visited 12/2013. Charmingly located right on the Watou market place, beautifully decorated with an upper end restaurant’s sense of style, toned down with West-Flemish down-to-earthness, going very well with the beer theme. All courses in the brewer’s menu apart from the lacklustre cinnemon apple desert and/or cheeses were splendid, beautifully incorporating the beers and just slightly edgy enough. House beer "Cuvée" a tasty blend of Watou Witte and Poperings Hommelbier, the rest of the selection focuses on the ultra-local (fair enough, in a place like Watou), but offers no real surprises, especially not from tap. Good service, although they could train their imported waitress(es) from 3kms South over the border to speak Dutch more fluently to make this a wholly charming+impeccable experience.
Our first time at the Hommelhof must have been somewhen in the Nineties, and since then each time we are there it seems to us the food is even more delicious, imaginative and to the point than before. Perhaps the beer selection could benefit from being refreshed by some of the newer Belgian developments. But already with the "old" Watou beers the Hommelhof is near to perfection.
