74 Stopped by here while in the area for business in mid February ’16. Kind of small for a Total Wine and did not realize until talking to somebody later that you can’t sell liquor outside of the state-run ABC stores. Great services, greeted several times upon entering and asked if I needed any help later on. Has a pretty decent selection of local and regional beers, large selection of singles, which is what I;m looking for when travelling. Decent prices - many singles less than $2. Worth a stop if in the area. |
78 (Visited 05/2013): Total Wine is located in Newport News on Oyster Point Rd not too far off I-64. There is a parking lot in front of the building. The beer is in the rear of the store, much of it on shelves and some in coolers. They have a section of singles as well. The selection at Total Wine consists of regional domestic craft brewers like St. George, Port City, Williamsberg Aleworks and Blue Mountain alongside other micros like Terrapin, Maine Beer, Firestone Walker and New Belgium. Many imports as well. Service at the store is pretty good. The guys stocking the shelves were helpful and checkout was friendly. Overall this is a good store to find beers from the area and beyond. |
82 Beer selection is pretty decent. Seems to be getting better over time. I think it's the best place to score some rarer beers on the peninsula. |
76 Decent selection and good prices. Lots of single 12 oz to mix and match six packs. Decent selection of 4 and 6 packs and lots of 22 oz bottles. I found a few things I have never heard of before! This is going to be my normal beer stop until I move back to the great Pacific Northwest! |
70 Clearly wine comes first here, but they also have a pretty nice selection of bottles, both domestic and European. What I like is that they sell almost everything as singles, which makes it easy to sample. I found nothing truly unique, but they have 400+ beers for sale, so most folks can surely add to their collection here. |
76 I think this is the best total wine in the hampton roads area. First impression was good, however it could have been because it was my first time there and I had worked for at least 12 hours prior and was ready for a brew. |
64 Easy to get to location. Plenty to choose from for a beginner rater wanting a nice selection to choose from. Mix and match 6 packs with good prices |
50 Not a huge Total Wine location. Had the usual array of macros and the more common micros. I was hoping to find some Alewerks Coffeehouse here since it’s so close to the brewery, but did not find anything but the standard release alewerks. Definitely a large selection of beer, but nothing to go out of one’s way to get. |
66 This is a chain across the region. This particular location is a bit smaller than the one I first visited in No.Va. ... but they still manage to present a pretty impressive array of both six packs and singles, particularly for regional micros. Just having moved to the area, I’d say that about 40% were new to me. For regulars to the area, of course, it may not be as unique. But I’d still say that the variety is very good for a neighborhood liquor store. This isn’t as obscure or exotic as Bon Vivant or Coastal, but for the every day buy, this is a good place to start. And their prices are significantly better than the boutique stores ... $2 cheaper per bottle for Weyerbacher specials, for example ($7.99 vs $9.99 at Coastal). They also had a pretty cool wine tasting going on the day we went and a far better than average lineup of basic-to-extravagant wines. UPDATE: After living here for a while, I’m becoming less impressed. WATCH YOUR RECEIPT ... I’ve been overcharged more than once. And today I heard one of the guys tell a customer that the difference between pilsner and lagers was one was top fermented and one was bottom fermented. Jeez ... |
62 I’ve had some good deals here, but overall this place has been a MAJOR disappointment. The shelves are constantly unstocked/out of stock. The people I’ve spoken with usually have no clue when the beer will show back up. Prices on the tag versus the register price have been incorrect many times and when brought to the attention of the proper people, left unchanged for weeks. That said, this is the only place to find Samichlaus and SN Celebration in the area. I’m almost forced to buy things here at times. They have a above average selection of US micros as well and that has helped contribute to my ratings. Worth going to once in while, but do not get your heart set on finding beer nirvana. ****UPDATE TO THIS RATING: BEWARE! If you buy from them, check your receipt BEFORE leaving. I got hosed by them the other day. Bought two 6 pack build-your-own kits and on a couple of bottles got charged for a six pack rather than a single. Didn’t pay any attention to it even though the cost seemed high. It’s my own fault, but I wanted to give anyone reading this a heads up so it doesn’t happen to you! |
