34 /100 KING'S HEAD YARD, 45 BOROUGH HIGH STREET
“This is a traditional old pub down a narrow alleyway off Borough High Street. Quite a tourist spot due to the location. The beers we had were in poor order unfortunately. The choice is mainly from Harveys Brewery but no tie that I could ascertain.“

“Small shop inside Borough market, decent selection of beers on the shelves and some chilled in the fridge, mostly from UK. A bit expensive.“

“You can't miss this, right on the high-street prominantly on the corner just opposite one side of the market, and with some wonderfully dated, but still wonderful, external tiling. Inside's superficially a bit overcrowded, and aimed at people who want a stand-up swiftie, but if you dive round the back, you'll find some cozy little rooms for more of a sit-down sesh. Selection's not bad, I usually find a couple of real ale ticks, but it's not whoring to the ticker market. Food looked good, but beyond my eastern-european budget. Definitely worth popping you head round the door, in particular if you can avoid one of several daily rush hours.“

“I had always given this a miss in the past but on reading the reviews below I thought I would give it a go. It is a little tight in there and a squeeze to get to the bar. It's very popular. There are a few keggy beers on which appears to be where the main choice lies. Comfortable and friendly. It's worth a look if in the area.“

THE HOP EXCHANGE, 24 SOUTHWARK STREET
“We have been here a few times now, so time for a rating. It's always full when we go, so I am presuming that it is very popular but I don't really get the vibe in there. The range of beers seems mostly static, the bar can get stuffy and the TV's dominate showing any sporting dross. Not really a favourite for me but it is close to some decent pubs so does fit in.“

“There is a goid range of craft beer available both on tap (14 taps, 4 casks) and in bottles. There is a small indoor area while the outdoor beer garden under a big umbrella makes for a relaxing place to sit and sip. Given there was a lively lunch crowd enjoying a few tasty beers, bar service was quick and friendly. Prices are London craft beer scene standard. Worth a visit.“

“The lunch time crowd was in so the place was quite busy but service was fairly quick and friendly considering. There are a number of small bars as well as a small area out front. There are ten taps with local main-stream craft, two casks of Young's and three guest casks. There is also a limited range of craft bottled beers. Prices are London standard (£6/pint).“

“The stock is mostly UK craft with a few European items as well as a small section of seasonal Christmas beers. There is a reasonable range of can/bottle beer on the shelves and a few cool ones in the fridge. Some items, depending on the style, are expensive while others are more reasonably priced. The three staff present were reactive to my purchase.“

“This old pub is wedged in between modern buildings in the shadow of The Shard and has a number of small bars and a large outdoor area where we sat near a gas heater. It was well patronised by after-work patrons enjoying their pints. Service was prompt given the crowd. There is a limited number of beers on tap, all main-stream 'craft'. We also tried a gin flight and the three nips were very tasty.“

“Good place to pop in og you fond yourself at Borough Market, as you'll probably find a couple of beers (ceg or cask) unique to the area. Friendly service with samples offered. My deep fried cod goujons was quite nice. OK music, but really too loud.“

“Traditional real ale pub on the edge of Borough Market. Always busy and bustling, with quite a range of beers on tap. Quality can be variable so go for the popular beers that have a good turnover. Harveys Sussex Best always in good condition here. Obviously you're only a 5 minute walk from the Royal Oak though where you can be guaranteed a perfect pint.“

“Historic pub on Borough Market. Get very busy at times. Choice of around 20, mostly on cask with the rest on keg. A pretty uninspiring selection and some of the cask beers were not in good condition. I’m sure I’ll be back at some point to give it another go but if they cannot sustain the the number of cask lines they should cut it back a little“

“Nice enough pub handily located for Borough Market. Usually so rammed one hardly notices surroundings. About 8 kegs of which half macro, a couple of (dull) casks. The website promises maybe a bit more with its beer offering than is delivered. It's fine, you can find a nice pint here, but there are far better beery locations nearby.“

“When history of old carriage collides with happy hour and tourists. Small place was packed with after work people drinking pints after pints. We managed to find a tabke inside, and sampled some of the cask ales. Good atmosphere, albeit the big crowd, but it was better inside. Service was ok for that type of rush. Big cask selection which I assume, given the big crowd, rotates fast enough to keep the freshness. Keeping that in mind, you won't get much of the new craft hype in town, and can expect to find some of the bigger names with some other smaller cask offerings.“

“Located at the back end of Borough market. Visited twice, small building that has an odd temporary feel to it with a terrace that seems to have construction of something that should be adjacent to a beach. Enough space and not many people still on both visits, it was during unpopular hours. Very friendly service. Cool display tv for beers currently available which sadly was updated with delay and a few kegs not hooked up. 4 cask beers about 12 taps with fairly interesting choices, all UK beers, several non-English. Tap selection was nice average prices. Bottle and can collection was quite impressive, I saw them getting a shipment that included Rare Barrel on my second visit. After getting a £ 10.90 440 ml. can of a Cloudwater DIPA, I shied away about inquiring about any other bottled or canned offering, bottles and cans in bars in London appeared to be always quite steep especially compared to draft offerings. Nice bar but not as great as I expected coming in. No real food. Moe tourists than locals, all real beer geek tourists.“

“A stall inside the wonderful Borough market. I remember this one having quite the reputation many years ago but it doesn’t seem like that is the case these days or I remember wrong. There is a fridge with chilled beers but most beers are located on the shelves. I mainly viewed the larger UK selection, good plenty of new stuff for me, only thing that really caught my attention were cans of fresh Cloudwater. Foreign selection is some dull & some interesting. Prices are rather steep. Overall decent but definitely not amazing and a bit prohibitively expensive to buy a lot. Nothing to note about the service.“

“Been here many times over the years when living and working close by, last visit most recently earlier this year. Very small place but with a pretty good selection across tap and bottle. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and I like to pop by on the odd occasion to reminisce back to times when London didn’t have as many great options as there are now. Still a solid spot and well worth a visit.“

“Used to visit here when working nearby about 12 years ago and back then it was pretty much your standard pub of that era, but on a recent visit back was pleasantly surprised to see it had upped its game somewhat with the addition of some interesting keg and cask offerings including brews from the likes of Siren/Wild/Cloudwater/Fourpure and served on my visit in good condition, pretty nice surprise and worth popping by if in the area.“

“Small bottleshop within Borough Market that’s been around for quite some time, on last visit back it had an ok selection of beers to offer, but not as good as I remember it being many years ago, and not keeping pace with the many options of the new breed of bottleshops opening up around London, worth popping by, but definitely better options elsewhere nowadays.“

70 /100 HOP EXCHANGE, 24 SOUTHWARK STREET
“Visited on 4th July 2017. Cavernous underground venue in the basement of the old hop exchange. It’s got vaulted ceilings in the main room which houses the bar area and is laid out with bench seating like a trad German venue, also a couple of rooms for overspill. Beer range is decent enough with a good mix of German styles plus a house Helles made by West (Hell Katz). Prices are not bad, being before the evening rush it was lovely and quiet. Service was good. Not a bad spot to pick up a couple of German ticks“

“Only let down here was an incompetent bar man. We ordered food then had to wait over an hour because our ticket had been mislaid. Not just us here as the boss could be heard giving the hapless barman a bollocking the rest of the afternoon. But despite the wsit awesome food and the range of Harveys beers including a mild.“

“Another pub that I’ve been to many times but not rated. So, here we go. It may or may not be the smallest pub in London, but you won’t be able to move for people: the Rake’s glowing reputation precedes it. It gets crowded but the bar staff deal well with the orderly crowds. There’s 14 keg and 4 cask lines, although a few may be spent by early evening. The likes of Stone Berlin, Roosters, Fierce and Vibrant a Forest are on show today. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, the fridges packed with cans and bottles are sure to whet your whistle. The Rake also do more than their share of events: mini festivals, tap takeovers and beer releases. So always worth checking their Facebook and keeping your ear to the ground. A brilliant craft bar.“
