“Across the river from Reading, it was quite a pleasant walk here, even in winter. Fairly pleasant traditional L-shaped pub, family friendly, including 4-legged family members. Round the side is a bit bright. modern, and soulless, but the main room is a bit trad and tatty - nothing wrong in that, it's a pub not a show house. Much of the year, they appear to have a huge marquee outside too. Good selection of beers - 6 HP and 13 craft keg - lots of different breweries represented. Lotsa tix! Very friendly staff, know what they're selling and about beer generally. I liked this place. Mark and Sarah were exchanging glances, but never vocalised their discomfort. Might be some Reading/Caversham rivalry thing.“

“Review during Lockdown release, phase 1, outdoor drinking only. A fair chunk of the car park has been taken for outdoor drinking with 2 distinct areas, as I hadn't booked I was put in the rather breezier side. When you ordered your beer they wanted your card to retain, no that isn't happening in a contactless age. After the initial brusque welcome things became a lot friendlier and the service was prompt and more welcoming. The pub itself has a slightly tatty, community pub feel. Very popular, but it has the advantage of being open where many aren't. A good selection of beers in cask and keg to try. I will revisit when we can get inside.“

“8 cask & 6 keg lines, an interesting and varied selection on, all well kept. Beers from Buxton, Wild Weather, Northern Monk etc. During my visit one of the cask beers tasted strange, and the landlord immediately pulled it even though there was about half the barrel left. The gents toilet has been refurbed, it’s very smart now. Worth a visit“

“Apparently it’s famous for Lennon & McCartney having performed here as "The Nerk Twins" in the 1960, long before they formed the Beatles. The outside looks a little rough & may still be recognisable from the Nerk Twins’ time, but the inside has clearly changed a lot - it’s now decorated in an attempt at craft bar minimalist style, although it still looks very spartan at the moment - I think maybe the refurb is not quite finished? The right-hand room is the games room with - joy of joys - a bar billiards table, as well as the more usual pool & darts. The left-hand room has the bar seating. Very nice beer selection - 8 cask taps and 5 craft kegs (these were generally stronger beers), all were guest beers on rotation, and all relatively unusual - no Doom Bar or GK IPA here, or even the more "usual" craft beers. Cask quality was excellent and prices reasonable. The landlady didn’t seem overly welcoming but maybe we caught her at a bad moment - she clearly knew her beers, and both she and the friendly locals were keen to make recommendations. It’s not the best in Reading yet (the Nags Head & Castle Tap are still ahead) but feels like its maybe still a bit of a work in progress. It’s certainly aiming high, and is definitely one to watch!.We enjoyed the beer & bar billiards & will definitely return.“

“A rather run down pub, but with a really good selection of unusual beers on the 8 handpumps. I understand that a refurbishment is about to start which will hopefully make this a more salubrious place.“

“Nice selection of beers. Very untidy men's toilet. Voted as Reading & Mid-Berkshire CAMRA’s Pub of the Year 2015.“
