56 /100 Abbotsford (Bar) 3-5 ROSE STREET Visited this pub first time on The Great Graig Pubcrawl Tour 23/4-2012. |
68 /100 Fierce Bar Edinburgh (Bar) 167 ROSE STREET Visited Sept 2020. It's a nice, homely space but was unfortunately devoid of any atmosphere whatsoever due to Scottsh Govt rules about music in venues during the pandemic. Thankfully the beers on offer made up for it but it wasn't a place to linger. Around 18-20 taps, mostly Fierce fayre. Bottle.can fridge for takeaway. Hope I can revisit in happier times. |
74 /100 Beer Kitchen (Innis & Gunn) (Restaurant) 81-83 LOTHIAN ROAD Large one room bar & kitchen on Lothian Road. Table service during our visit in September. Around 15 taps, mostly I&G beers but there were some interesting guests from The Bruery on tap also. Nice place with friendly service |
78 /100 Portobello Tap (Bar) 87 PORTOBELLO HIGH STREET PORTOBELLO First launched in 2018/2019. Connection with Cross Borders Brewing and has a broad range of their beers as well as other Scottish and generally UK craft beer. Food is burgers and fries - they've deliberately gone down the route of American style burger joint rather than some sort of gourmet gastro-pub style of burger, and they've absolutely nailed it. Visited once before lockdown and twice since. The ambiance and service are hard to properly appreciate since Covid as beer and food is all ordered by going onto their website. Service is very quick on a Sunday lunchtime, especially on the food side. |
84 /100 133 LOTHIAN ROAD Great selection of beers. Good service. |
68 /100 Beer52 (Internet-based) 26 HOWE STREET Ordered a small box of beers from Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia, plus a Merseyside tick, via the shop (not the club) on Wednesday morning. The box was delivered on Tuesday. I don't think this is "same day dispatch" advertised by the site, and it's longer than delivery from other UK online beer shops (in my experience), but I suppose it's something to do with the coronavirus crisis. The beers are interesting but pretty expensive. I wouldn't join the club, however, because I prefer to select my own beers. |
62 /100 Beer52 (Internet-based) 26 HOWE STREET Early days for me with these, placed my first order on Sunday and the box was here on Thursday, during lock down, so pretty decent. Struggling with not being able to choose and my first delivery had 50% of beers I had rated before. I will continue during lock down then review more fully when we are put on probation. The packaging was great, no damages, friendly delivery through Hermes. So good and bad points at present. |
74 /100 Beer52 (Internet-based) 26 HOWE STREET I have been using their monthly box system for a couple of years and I have no major problems with them (otherwise I would have cancelled). My 12 beers arrive and for the price it's usually good value. Yes, I've had one or two of them before sometimes, but in general I get to try plenty of beers I wouldn't see in Shropshire. |
60 /100 Beer52 (Internet-based) 26 HOWE STREET Some OK beers, some interesting countries, some supermarket filler and those dodgy brewed in Belgium ones. I've got three boxes I haven't touched yet and I really need to cancel before I get a 4th. After first signing up 3 or so years ago I cancelled because quite simply I'd rather choose my own beers than get a job lot. Signed up again because of one of their tempting freebie offers which to be fair to them worked as I have now gone on four months due to not being able to cancel online. This lot probably straddle two groups: beginners and people who rate 1,000 beers a week. |
62 /100 Beer52 (Internet-based) 26 HOWE STREET Been doing the monthly beer club for just under 2 years. Overall I usually get new beers, some have been shelfies and misleading to whom brewed it, but again ticks are ticks. Did have some issue when they changed to Hermes shipping, however after two complaints they let me switch to Royal Mail. No issues since. Service when needed has been easy to work with. |
70 /100 Cloisters (Bar) 26 BROUGHAM STREET Medium sized pub. Typical tap list with some interesting bottles/can. No food in Monday’s |
74 /100 Salt Horse Beer Shop (Beer Store) 61 BLACKFRIARS STREET Small shop. Lots of UK craft plus taps. |
76 /100 Bow Bar (Bar) 80 WEST BOW Small pub close to the Castle. Good meat pies for lunch. Local taps/cask both craft and classic. International bottle list with some interesting picks. |
88 /100 133 LOTHIAN ROAD Great place with lots of wood and multiple levels. Good tap selection with focus on the UK but also international. Electric bottle selection - best to look in the cooler behind the bar. |
78 /100 BrewDog Edinburgh (Bar) 143 COWGATE Nice selection, food quite expensive. Great atmosphere . |
62 /100 435 LAWNMARKET In a dead center with a fancy plaque. Few taps on cask ales and more of keg ones. It was quite full, but service was quick. |
54 /100 Beerhive (Beer Store) 24 RODNEY STREET This was a weird place. It was kind of full at the time of being there. Service was quick. Not much of the selection. |
80 /100 Beer Kitchen (Innis & Gunn) (Restaurant) 81-83 LOTHIAN ROAD One of the coolest places with a friendly service in town. Seriously! Seriously? Yes. Good service, good guest beers, more-less ok ambiance. Would come back. |
30 /100 8 LISTER SQUARE, SIMPSON LOAN Every indication showed that this place should be open. No notes on googlemaps or facebook. But after like million miles walk we arrived to this place only to see how closed it was. Ohhh well. Not worth the walk. |
52 /100 Booking Office (JDW) (Bar) 17 WAVERLEY BRIDGE In a dead center of everything. Was always packed of tourists. Noisy (of crowd) and smelt of stale beer. Didn't have anything noteworthy on tap. |
82 /100 BrewDog Lothian Road (Bar) 50 LOTHIAN ROAD Top notch place in a small hub with Innis&Gunn and Hanging Bat not too far from it. Good service. Nice selection of taps and couple freezers with bottles too. Food was nice as well.
Would come back. |
74 /100 133 LOTHIAN ROAD Open on bizarre times. I walked past this place 3 or 4 times, before I managed to notice bat sign. Otherwise this place looked from outside like it's closed down and dead. Anyways it was Boxing day and some parts of the Edinburgh apparently had some cold so pipes were frozen or something like that. That means that only 4 beers were on. Out of idk how many, but many. 2 of those beers were ticky, so all good. Except beers, modern yeasty sour stuff which only hype boys like.
Place itself looked decent. Would like to come back. |
64 /100 4 GRASSMARKET Clean and modern place. Loud music and even louder guests.
They brew their own beers, which were ok quality, but not real ales. Might come back. |
72 /100 31 LOTHIAN ROAD Most probably one of the most beautiful places in Edinburgh.
Bit out the the center, but not too bad (about 15min walk if you know the detour). Better selection than other JDW's in town.
Had haggis here, which was bit too dry, but nice and spicy. Would eat again.
Would come back. |
70 /100 BrewDog Edinburgh (Bar) 143 COWGATE ok it worth a visit but ambient seems a bit for beer geek or teenagers
usual selection of brewdog and guest brewery
I prefer brewdog glasgow |
86 /100 Cloisters (Bar) 26 BROUGHAM STREET my favourite pub in edinburgh
good selection with more or less 10 casks and 5/6 kegs
knowledgeable staff |
82 /100 133 LOTHIAN ROAD mix of old style and modern pub
6 casks and 14 kegs
probably the best selection in edinburgh |
76 /100 Kays Bar (Bar) 39 JAMAICA STREET lovely pub in a residential area
6 or 7 handpumps with scottish ale and good whisky selection
we really enjoyed some pints
really welcoming |
54 /100 Chanter (Bar) 30-32 BREAD STREET It was Hibs vs Hearts derby day and full of people. We managed to find a table. No real ambiance in this place. Had some selection of cider, but no real ales. |
52 /100 Mitre Bar (Nicholson’s) (Bar) 131-133 HIGH STREET Popped in for a quick sip late evening on x-mas day. They were open. Nothing bad to say about this place, but kind of average. |
78 /100 Jolly Judge (Bar) 7 JAMES COURT, LAWNMARKET Top notch place in Edinburgh. I was skeptical at first, but as soon as I stepped in all my doubts disappeared. Solid lineup of cask ales and ciders as well. Came back later, but they were closed (x-mas day so I understand why).
Would come back. |
50 /100 Last Drop (Nicholson’s) (Bar) 74 GRASSMARKET Some kind of hang-themed pub. Friendly service, but my only real ale was kind of off, so wouldn't come back. |
58 /100 Greyfriars’ Bobby Bar (Bar) 30-34 CANDLEMAKER ROW Not too far from center, small cozy bar with 4 real ale taps. |
42 /100 Brewhemia (Bar) 1A MARKET STREET Looks like a tourist trap and that's what it is. Tries to be a restaurant/bar/brewpub/everything, but actually is nothing. They had 20 taps, I had flight of 3 and none of them were in good condition. Couldn't finish any of them. Avoid |
58 /100 Halfway House (Bar) 24 FLESHMARKET CLOSE Quite close to the main street in old town. Place smelt of piss, but had weird cozy feeling. It's tiny (max 20 people and it's a stretch).
3 cask beers on tap. Friendly service. Would come back. |
70 /100 Abbotsford (Bar) 3-5 ROSE STREET They know how to use fireplace!!! Most of the places I visited in Edinburgh didn't, but they did and it's a huge bonus.
Cozy place. 5-6 real ales on tap, nice selection of whisky too. Would come back. |
72 /100 Hanover Tap (Bar) 112 HANOVER STREET Modern, Scandinavian type of craft beer bar. 8 beers on tap. It was quite empty when we arrived, but filled up quite quickly. Nice service.
Would come back. |
42 /100 128 GEORGE STREET Quite ordinary place with very weird service. I asked "do you do thirds of pints?" and they say "yes of course". He came back with 2 pints. I looked at him and said I didn't order 2 pints, all I wanted was 1 third of a pint. He said ok! and grabbed another pint glass. I asked him to stop. He looked confused. I asked again, do you do 1/3 of pints and pointed the amount on the pint glass. Then he realized his mistake and replied that they do only half pints. I said ok then, and I got served 2 half pints. Ohh welllllllll.....
Selection was definitely on of the poorest of JWDs I've ever been. |
68 /100 Standing Order (JDW) (Bar) 62-66 GEORGE STREET Beautiful place. Large and spacious. Pillars add second or third dimension to all of it.
Cask beers were in good condition, didn't really pay attention to other taps. Beer was cheap. 1/3 of pints were served, some as cheap as 0,66 pounds!
Full Scottish breakfast was cheap and it tasted cheap as well.
Would visit again. |
66 /100 Beer52 (Internet-based) 26 HOWE STREET Ordered a box from the bottle shop to take advantage of a few offers, it would be far too expensive otherwise. The bottle shop only sells whatever is left over from the monthly subscription boxes, my order was my picks from the "Danube" themed box. Delivery was fast and the beers were well packed. The beers varied massively in quality, but it was a good way to get ticks from some new countries. All my beers were "real", no imitations. |
54 /100 BrewDog Edinburgh (Bar) 143 COWGATE I think this is the worst BrewDog bar I've ever been, by ambience and service. But it's Monday, past midnight and I have nowhere else to go. Tap selection was good and condition fresh.
This is my second place in town after Bannermans down the street and I must say I'm not impressed so far.
Went back next day. Horror show. In daylight this place looks like a dump. So dirty, floors sticky etc. Dive bar. |
