64 /100 OPPOSITE INT'L ARRIVALS HALL O.R. TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, KEMPTON PARK Having not been in South Africa for 27 years I was happy to find a few different bottled beers in the restaurant of this very convenient airport hotel. There is a small outside patio for you to enjoy them on. |
50 /100 O R TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, KEMPTON PARK Visited this some years ago en route to Kruger Park. 8 beers available which were all quite poor. Standard airport setup. Easy available and a bit dull. Didnt try the food |
54 /100 1 FOX ST, FERREIRAS DORP Of the six ZA breweries I visited, this was the best quality being slightly above Woodstock of Cape Town (but service levels poorer). I had Electric Light 4/5, Killer Hop 4/5, and a NE IPA which wasn't on the menu, which they said was 7.2pc but the website said was 6.5pc, I rated highly at 4.5/5. I wanted to try the Urban Legend IPA which is the best rated beer from the brewery (and in ZA top 50 ratebeers) which was on menu and on draft font, but not available. I asked if bottle version available, but only for takeaway. Commercially, it's very bad that they don't have their signature beer available on draught, and not even on bottle format as backup (despite having for take out!!!!!!) . Manager/Owner needs a kick ups ass. I said they should turn the pump clip round for Urban Legend, which they did. I asked for another NE IPA but half litre this time instead of 30cl, but they refused as it was 7.2pc (not on menu, and their website says it's 6.5pc!!!!!!). Not really happy they said it was R50 for 30cl, 32pc more than any other beer as not on menu. They also had a Stout on draught, but nothing in menu and not on pump clips. This is amateurish, which sadly you expect with ZA, how can you sell a beer if it's not in menu and doesn't have a pump clip?
I sat outside as it was a warm March evening. The food was expensive, but good quality, but very poor vegetarian options.
As Joburg CBD is an utter dump, this place is an oasis. If they could get their act together commercially on beer front, I would rate much higher.
Being Joburg, the brewpub place is secure and I felt safe, but you should absolutely not walk here at night (when I visited) and probably not during the day.
Menu listed beers 30cl then 50cl:
Mad Giant Lager 4.2pc R27/38
Super Session Cannabis (!) R30/42
Guzzler Pilsner R34/45
Electric Light R34/R48
Killer Hop R34/48
Urban Legend R38/56 (but not on)

84 /100 1 FOX ST, FERREIRAS DORP Huge brewery. Lots of outdoor space, lively atmosphere. Has the standard Mad Giant beers which are fine. Nothing too exciting beer-wise. But for Joburg its a great brewery. Atmosphere out ranks the beer. Great food. Fun spot |
90 /100 TOPS at SPAR Radiokop (Grocery Store) CNR PAUL KRUGER & MOZART STREETS, RADIOSKOP Great selection of South African Beers. I’ve found everything on my list...
Very friendly manager who helped me a lot.
All in all very nice shop |

56 /100 Liquor City Elridge (Beer Store) 100 ELIZABETH ROAD The Liquor City chain seems to be ubiquitous in the Johannesburg area - this was the smaller of two within a 5 minute drive of our hotel. Most of the beers are offered by sixer or by the case - both room temp or cold. But there were also two full coolers of craft beer, from about two dozen breweries from around the country, two to six different beers from each brewery. Single prices were about 30 Rand ($2) and sixers/cases were cheaper. Service was cashier only, I didn’t test their beer knowledge and they didn’t offer. An easy place to stock up, and for me it was a way to tour the breweries nation-wide with the limited time I had away from the hotel. |
70 /100 Jolly Roger (Bar) 10 FOURTH AVE, PARKHURST (7TH STREET) The best (and "only") neighbourhood pub in Jo’burk. In the still lovely Parkhurst neighbourhood, you can actually walk around the street, from place to place. This is the best place to be. I love sitting on the upstairs veranda and look down on the street below, when the Sun goes down over Jo’burg, drink ice cold South African beers and eat one of their gorgeous pizza’s. If you visit Jo’burg, please don’t miss this wonderful, almost English, pub! |
84 /100 Norman Goodfellows Illovo (Beer Store) 192 OXFORD ROAD, ILLOVO Primarily a wine store but with by far the best beer selection I’ve come across in Johannesburg. A great selection of SA brews and some international as well (BrewDog, Dogfish Head, etc). Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Johannesburg. |
66 /100 Loco Liq - Blairgowrie Plaza (Beer Store) BLAIRGOWRIE PLAZA, CONRAD DR, RANDBURG Great place! Decent prices and good selection with some gems that is very hard to find in ZA. I found Westmalle, most brewdogs available in ZA, some absurd belgians, A LOT of ZA microbrews, a good selection of English ales and a decent selection of weiss and dunkels from germany. |
78 /100 Norman Goodfellows Illovo (Beer Store) 192 OXFORD ROAD, ILLOVO Great place for South Africa! they have around 50-60 craft beers from mainly south africa, england and belgium. Found some gouden carolus gems here - hopsjinoor, kaizer blauw, tripel, ambrio and classic. :) Worth a visit. |
78 /100 Loco Liq - Blairgowrie Plaza (Beer Store) BLAIRGOWRIE PLAZA, CONRAD DR, RANDBURG Mainly a wine and liquor store but with a pretty solid beer selection. The best I’ve seen so far anywhere in SA actually. There is a pretty long wall cooler dedicated to SA beers and some imports. Dogfish head 60 minute was even present if I remember correctly, although the imports were mostly European. Good selection of Darling, Robson’s, Boston Brewery and a few others that were new to me. Prices were decent (roughly R30-R35 a bottle ($3.00-$3.50 at today’s exchange rates). Good place to stop.
Update 5/20/17. The beer selection is larger and wider ranging. Good selection of SA brews as the industry keeps growing. Haven’t come across a better beer store in Joburg yet. |
64 /100 Loco Liq - Blairgowrie Plaza (Beer Store) BLAIRGOWRIE PLAZA, CONRAD DR, RANDBURG I haven’t visited other beer shops and I can’t compare, but I’ve been told this is the best one in the area. There is a good number of SA beers, some imports to satisfy the locals; I also appreciated finding here the wine I was looking for and many local port wines. The place is a bit messy, with boxes everywhere; I got good help. |
14 /100 Norman Goodfellows Illovo (Beer Store) 192 OXFORD ROAD, ILLOVO Not much beer selection. Some good wine and whiskey tho. |
84 /100 Loco Liq - Blairgowrie Plaza (Beer Store) BLAIRGOWRIE PLAZA, CONRAD DR, RANDBURG One of the biggest craft beer selections that you’ll find in JHB. From international beers to craft, to commercial.
An all in one beer stop.
Not badly priced either. |
90 /100 Loco Liq - Blairgowrie Plaza (Beer Store) BLAIRGOWRIE PLAZA, CONRAD DR, RANDBURG A bottle store with imported beer, local beer, local micro beer, LOADS OF BEER! This is the most types of beer I have ever seen in one place in South Africa.
Sadly, it is still a small collection to what I had the privilege to experience in Scotland.
But this is the start! We can now start to get proper imported beer easily. |
52 /100 Safari Club SA Lounge (Bar) 68 POMONA ROAD, KEMPTON PARK Be it known, sebletitje, that I did not enter this place. But since someone did, I have no shame in rating it, especially now that the place maps are up and running. It’s not possible to find good beer here, although you can find some tolerable ciders, and plenty of cheap lagers to tick. Then, if you have access, head down to the Air France lounge for a more extensive selection of similar bland lagers and a few ciders. At least the price is right. |
