“Visited three years ago. Up till now it is one of the shadiest and at the same time best beer places I've been to. Basically a Chinese run tiny shop with plastic tables and chairs on the pavement in one of the darker alleyways of Georgetown. What makes it stand out is: 1. the selection - back then I couldn't find imported craft beers from say Little Creatures in any other place I've been to in Malaysia; 2. the prices - dirt cheap for Malaysia, on par with Langkawi I'd say - but the latter is a duty free zone, whereas Penang is not; 3. the atmosphere - it is as non touristy as it only can be with lots of mainly Chinese locals downing beer after beer. It sort of looks like your typical dark alleyway den from a bad movie, certainly doesn't look clean and the immediate surroundings don't make a wholly safe impression but it's fun! A big shoutout to the Indonesian married drunk and toothless English expat whom we've met there!“

“A great Italian Restaurant in the heart of Georgetown. They have 10+ bottled beers of which six are craft. Prices are reasonable. Food is superb and keenly priced. Very enthusiastic staff who are passionate about their craft beers. Working Wi-Fi. Worth coming here for the food and a decent beer too.“

“Only serving Heineken Guinness Tiger and Kirin beers at the time of writing so not worth visiting from a Ratebeer point if view at the moment. It is only about 5 minutes walk from the Brussels beer cafe though so if you are in the area you might as well rate both“

“Good craft beer place but expensive and they add a 10% service charge. friendly knowledgable owners. A decent beer selection of mostly American beers. No wifi. Prices are high though, 30 to 34 Rm for a beer and then when you come to pay they add a 10% service charge. Nice place but too expensive for craft beer“

“A real surprise.. This looks like a typical 3rd world whole in the wall convenience store, dirty and grimy, fridges of pop, alcopop, SEA lager crap, but lo, the last fridge contains the good stuff. Actually a bit cheaper than other places, imports from USA, Europe, Japan and Australia. Little stools serve as both chairs and tables and you basically sit in a dark alleyway. For Malaysia, a good option.“

“This has only 4 craft beer bottles, 3 Brewdog and 1 Hitachino nest at the time of writing, so it wouldn't be my first choice to try for craft beer in Georgetown. Friendly service. They are first and foremost a burger place. Prices for the beers were around Rm 29.“

“It's close to Little India. This shouldn't be your first port of call for craft beer as they only have around 3 craft beers currently but they said they have a couple more coming soon. It's an Italian restaurant. They have a happy hour between 5pm and 7pm where you buy 2 bottles and get 1 free. They do add a service charge of 10%. Prices are between Rm 32 and 38.“

“I think it's what Taps Penang used to be. It's literally just around the corner. There are no tap beers. About 10 bottles mostly Brewdog and Hitachino nest. No one was serving at the beer stand so I don't know any prices.“

“Nice old looking place. It's long, the cakes are at the front. The bar section is at the back. They have about 10 craft beers all 35-40Rm, so on the expensive side“

“As JmGreenuk says, not really a Ratebeer destination as you are unlikely to get any ticks. The bar does have a lot of history though and makes a nice change of pace from the happy hour places. The Guinness foreign extra stout is your best option for RM 15. Free WiFi.“

“Georgetown really isn't the place to come right now for craft beer and 99% of the bars here will only be serving macro beers, even the places that call themselves specialist beer bars. So, you might as well drink your Tiger or even a cocktail somewhere nice and the Junk Cafe is one of the quirkiest places i've found so far in Georgetown and seems to be tastefully modelled on a Budapest ruin pub. It's the only bar of this style that i've found in Malaysia. Well worth stopping by, but don't expect any ticks!“

“Not a beer bar at all so don't shoot the messenger, but where in Georgetown is? If you are going to drink somewhere you might as well go somewhere that's interesting. This place goes back almost 60 years and has been owned by the same Chinese / Malaysian couple for half that time. It has a strong association with the Aussie military going back to the Vietnam war era. You will be asked to sign the visitors book if you are a newbie and there is lots of military memorabilia on the walls. The items recovered from the 2004 fire are on the right hand side as you walk in. I recommend the Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. There isn't much else.“

“Update August 2019 : Super busy as usual and a reservation is required or be prepared to wait. The beer selection is not what it was and is now dominated by a smaller number of Brewdog beers. Take a close look at your bill. A 200 USD bottle of wine was added to mine and they didn’t seem that surprised when I pointed it out. Original rating : The building is basically an arts centre that sells cake and beer! It’s an old classic Chinese style place that probably hasn’t changed much in a while. They have fifty different cakes they say and I’m not disputing that. It’s a long thin place that gets very busy, so get there early! A decent imported beer selection mainly from the US. Worth stopping by if you can find a seat. The RateBeer map is accurate.“

“A huge modern bar in the Penang Times Square mall with seats for 100+ people in both a covered indoor area and an outside patio. The beer selection is poor though. They have just four locally brewed macro beers on tap and a dozen bottles, some of which are the same beers as they have on draft. There is a decent spirit selection but this is supposed to be the BEER factory. The food is decent and reasonably priced. Staff are friendly and helpful. If you are passing by and have a craving for a Tiger beer, then stop by, otherwise, stay in the old town. This place really has no beer that you won’t find in any bar on Penang island despite its name.“

“Quite a bit place with plenty of seating. Service was quick but I was there at 5pm when it was quiet. The tap choice is the usual macro beers. The bottle choice is reasonable with some Belgian beers, a little creatures beer etc etc but no surprises for the average beer geek. A 33cl bottle of Business foreign export stout cost 20 RM. Worth a visit if you are in the area but not worth going out of your way for.“

“Well worth a visit if in Penang. Choice is good now with a few imported beers. By far the cheapest place for a beer in Penang. Very popular with tourists and locals alike“

“Update 11th April 2017. The selection of foreign beers has grown substantially with a good selection from Japan and Australia in particular. If you want a tick in Penang this is the place to head for right now. Original Rating..... Well, it was worth the walk I guess! As others have said, it’s a grocery store with a few plastic tables and chairs outside. Popular with tourists and locals it’s a decent place to have a beer during the evening. Most beers are Malaysian, Belgian, Indian and Australian. A half decent selection I must say and relatively cheap. It’s not hard to find, so check it out.“

“A quirky old brown bar in a historic Chinese house in the heart of the old town. Lots of wood and an impressive bar. A few local beers and a small German selection too. Not a craft beer destination really but it’s a little different to everything else around here and there might be a tick or two. Good service and decent food. No wifi sadly.“

“A fairly standard Brussels Beer Café outlet but certainly the one in the best location with most awesome view. A dozen beers on tap, mainly Belgian of course. Good food and excellent service. Working wifi. There is a lovely patio area outside too to admire that gorgeous view!“

“About 45 minutes walk from the centre of Georgetown, on the coast, on the ground floor of the Gurney shopping centre. I was really lucky. I just arrived and a storm arrived at the same time with lots of rain (in the dry season!). Onto the beers As Kermis said, lots of Belgian regular beers on tap and draught, the local Connors stout and 1 surprise, Tennents stout from Scotland which is down as retired. So, despite the hefty Malaysian price of 35 ringit a pint or 7.50 Euros, I had to have it. The decor is very Belgian with flags and pictures of Brussels on the walls. Update, when I paid the bill it was 5 Ringit/1 Euro less than the price advertised. I then noticed on my way out that they have a happy hour. It’s all day on Sunday and the rest I can’t remember. Contact them for details“

“Very different! A dirty shop with dirty seats available outside in the evening and now three beer fridges. Most of the beer isn’t really very good but still it’s the cheapest place to grab some ticks, and the most unique beers you’ll find in Georgetown at the time of writing without venturing out to Crab & Lobster.“

“Beautiful bar in a wonderful colonial/Chinese mansion style house filled with fans, no Arctic aircon in here! It’s not really a craft beer bar, but it does offer something a little different than the norm - a small but decent selection of German classics featuring a few Paulaners, Hacker Pschorr and some others. As with most places over here it’s combined restaurant and bar. I didn’t eat but the menu was mostly western style and some German options. Service was good and prices were fair for the region. Some lovely little quirky touches that you’ll discover :)“

“Big western style place at the entertainment area outside behind the Gurney Mall. Some nice breezy seating outside overlooking the water or ice cold over-zealous aircon inside. Beer selection is some pretty plain Belgian stuff on draft (12 taps) along with the local Connor’s stout. More fairly plain Belgian stuff by the bottle along with some international stuff. Didn’t try the food but the options are western pub style (think US/British, not Belgian). Good and not in your face service, and normal prices for craft beer in Malaysia.“

“Visited here in Nov 2015. This is a glorified off licence that puts plastic chairs out at night for folks to sit on. Beer selection is rather good for Malaysia (though that is not saying much) as are prices, hence was super busy on both nights that we visited. Most of the better beers were from Belgium or Australia.“

“OK, so by no means is this actually a bar. Look out for the ’Antarabasca Enterprises’ sign above the shop front. It’s basically a small, local Chinese run shop with two fridges inside - one for beer and mixed spirits and another for soft drinks. Doesn’t sound like much but there is actually a ’range’ of different beers here including the regular swill, but also the Danish Royal Stout, Hoegaarden and a mix of different strong lagers (all available in cans and bottles), which may result in a few ticks if that’s what you’re looking for. A no frills drinking establishment that during the day is pretty lowkey, but once evening rolls around tables and chairs magically appear outside along the alley and raucous drinking begins. It really is locals only who come here. A minute or two walk from Love Lane so it’s convenient to pick up a few beers if staying in the area. It’s good to know this place exists as there’s not really any other options (for dirt cheap beer), and it’s nice to try something else other than Tiger, although the shop does also appear to stock a never ending supply of that as well.“
