“Small cafe/bar adjacent to the Mont Des Cats monastery. Truly beautiful views from the top of the hill. The cafe/bar has really ramped the prices up in recent years, but it’s still a pleasant place to enjoy a Mont Des Cats, Hommelbier, Chimay or one or two other regional beers. Note there is now a seperate gift shop in the monastery itself which sells Mont Des Cats to take out that is cheaper than the cafe.“

“Charming traditional cafe with bags of atmosphere. Reasonable beer menu includes a house beer from Van Eecke. Good service and good value unpretentious food.“

“Traditional estaminet offering a traditional Flemish menu (I hope you like potatoes) and a short, uninspiring list of bottled beer common in the area. It was a struggle to find something to drink, as the one special house beer, Van Eecke Blauwersbier, was simple and sweet and tasted of cake frosting. The food was decent but did not stand out from anything that other kitchens are doing. I left disappointed given the recommendations.“

“Located in a beautiful area above on top of the hill the Mont de Cats. Cosy Inn with the Trappist Mont the Cats on bottle.“

“Visited 13/VI/2010. A lot of waiters running around for a place that was quite big, but not at all very busy. Had some Hommelbier, as the Mont des Cats trappist beer was non-existent at the time. Friendly staff, they stamped a declaration for me, that I was not in Belgium on Sunday June 13th, so I didn’t have to go vote (as we were on holidays in the area).“

“Very traditional and homely place in this little Flemish outpost in France. Feels like it hasn’t changed in decades, and probabaly hasn’t. Big selection of unusual (and sometimes unfathomable) pub games. Excellent unpretentious food and a decent beer list make this an essential stop. The house beer is made by Van Eecke.“

“Very quiet when we were visiting, on a Monday afternoon. The atmosphere was OK though, and it looked like a good meal can be enjoyed (which unfortunately we didn’t have the chance to find out as we were a bit in a hurry). The nearby monastery is a beautiful place, and their cheeses are marvelous!“

“A typical estanimet from north of France neat to Lille, welcom to Het Blauwershop! This is a nice place to discover the value from north of France and Belgium. Enjoy the carbonnade flamande or the potchevlech between to game party !“

“Well, you can drink a Mont des Cats over there. But you’ll pay like 5euros voor a 33cl. If you realise that 10k further, you’ll have a Westvleteren 12 for 4,7euro... Nevertheless, glad I’ve been there, I enjoyed my Mont des Cats (2 weeks after the beer was released).“

“Bound to become famous as it is bang opposite the next Trappist brewing abbey. It will need to get its act polished a bit before then though, as it is a bit ’small town’, not helped by the Chimay-brewed special Mont des Cats beer being, well, in need of some practice. Nice wood-burning stove though and very friendly. One to watch though, so pop in.“

“If you have to go to only one authentic bar in this extraordinary part of France make it here. If it were not authentic you would think the ambience overdone. The good range of local beers is supported by excellent and the best range of traditional pub games I have ever seen in a bar anywhere. Attitudes to match. Fabulous. Commissions its own beer from Van Eecke. Fine for just a drink.“

“One of the most famous ’estaminet’ in France. Seen on French or Japan tv if you care about it. Here’s the departure of Vlaams knowlege in France . Quite everybody in the north of France (or Belgium) knows the place. This is some history, trips are organised to go there. Cris Mercier, regional figure, owns the place from times for our pleasure. The choice of beers is exceptionnal, excellent traditional food (otje-Vlesche, (in french : Carbonade Flamande, Coq à la bière, Hutsepot, Flamiche aux poireaux, Tarte à la moutarde)) , some traditional Vlaams games (in french : jeu de Poire, la table a toupie, la grenouille ou le peck, le billard nicolas) and people. One of the places to go by travelling to, or from, Cassel.“
