“Cool place with a hippy vibe and lovely rustic feel, lots of plants. 5 taps on weekends only, when the Yorocco brewer is sometimes also there. The beers are great . I would come here often if I lived anywhere near here, and still make it several times a year even though it is far, far away. Definitely a must if you are going to Kamakura. One of my favorite places to drink beer.“

Nawlins BBQ House (Restaurant)
1-8 ODAKICHO, YOKOSUKA-SHI
“About 10 of the taps were on when we went. It seems to be focusing more on the restaurant crowd than the beer crowd, or at least that’s how it looked on a Sunday afternoon, when several families, most from the naval base, where in for dinner. BBQ is awesome, that’s for sure. Beer is heavily weighted towards Baird, plus a couple other Japanese crafts and a couple US imports. Prices for the Baird regular lineup at good a ¥900 / 500 ml. Others are a bit higher. Great food, good beer.“

“Chill restaurant and bar, a few steps away from Nawlins in Yokosuka, which is like another world within Japan. First floor is standing with also a camp site-like place to chill out. 2nd floor is tables for eating. Mostly Japanese food focused on fish looked good. 8 taps included 5 of their own. Beer is decent for them only being brewing for 3 months. Still needs some refinement, but all 4 that we tried were pretty well made. Prices are cheap: ¥500 for about 300ml and ¥680 for an American pint. Slightly more for guest beers. Definitely a good place to hang out and drink fresh beers.“

“5 minutes from Chigasaki station. 10 taps were half guest beers, and half house beers, which are worth the trip to try. Not a big place, and food and smoking smells are not always good for tasting, but the staff are good and the beers also. ¥900 a pint for house beers is decent. Just sampled a bit of food but it was good. Worth a stop along with Hop Man.“

“Please note Biirusaiko’s description for location is for the old location. New location is in Chigaski and current address is correct. Small ish place. Fits about 20. 1/3 pub, 2/3 barbaric works brewery - essentially this is the taproom for Barbaric Works, though oddly they don’t brand themselves that way and only about half the taps are Barbaric Works. 10 taps reasonable prices. Super local stuff and mainly locals come here. Fantastic food from lamb Gyoza to fruit tomato with cilantro salad. Lots of dark wood, a bit too hipster with fake corrugated rusted iron used as wall, fake deer head on the wall, an overly old toilet door, etc. still the food, service and beer are simply top notch. If you are in the area or even if you are not, you should make your way here from Tokyo with a stop at hopman. Downside is smoking allowed. I didn’t have much smoke so it deserves a 90 “

“Great place. Went for the anniversary so can’t fairly judge it but definitely want to go back. Big tap list with lots of interesting stuff. Nice looking bar. Nice staff. So different from Ushitora which it is loosely connected to. Pretty much everything Ushitora does wrong, Hopman does right.“

“Nice place. Great pizzas and interesting selection of beer. Was mainly the remnants of a Mikkeller tap takeover when we went. Seems to mainly be imports. Pricing is a little high but not so bad if you stick to the pints. Taster size available too which is nice and the size seemed decent.“

Blue Room (Bar)
2-8-9 KOMACHI, KAMAKURA-SHI
“Small pizza joint located in the main tourist street of Kamakura. Fairly average selection of j-beers served in 2 sizes, overpriced especially for the 2 "special" beers (year-round KBC for 1400?!?!). Beer flight also available but not great value either. Wanted to try the food but was told at 1pm that they had run out of pizza paste (?!?). Unimpressive pours, uncaring staff, odd glassware. Just another tourist trap...“

Aeon Chigasaki (Grocery Store)
3-5-16 CHIGASAKI
“For the two weeks I was in Japan, I was hard pressed to find any store that was better than the alcohol section at this supermarket. As I was staying in Chigasaki, I stopped here every 2-3 nights. Fairly close to Chigasaki station. Had a singles selection with a good 50+ different beers from at least a dozen or so countries. A big focus on German and Belgian stuff with some American things thrown in like Rogue and other random countries I’ve never seen anywhere else. At least a dozen Japanese craft breweries too which had good prices. Most of these were in the cooler though and not on the singles display. Tons of sake but I don’t know much about that. If I was in the Chigasaki area, I’d say this is the place to stop.“

“Definitely feels like this place got stuck in the 70’s or something. Food is fairly average and home-ish but still worth a stop when travelling the area, in order to enjoy most of the Atsugi beer lineup at very good prices, Hopslave usually being the main attraction. Takeaway bottles also available for a few year-round brews.“

XROSK (Restaurant)
1-4-24 KOMACHI, KAMAKURA-SHI
“Tiny bar/restaurant recently opened close to Kamakura station. Open kitchen, modern design, not much atmosphere. 7 taps on (including Shonan, Kytot, Sierra Nevada, Shimane...), served in 2 sizes, beer flight also available. Prices seem average but beware they are tax excluded, so pretty steep for the area actually. Food is decent, specially if fancy trying some local Shonan pork, but it is not really cheap either. Overall, a convenient spot for lunch in the area but Magnetico is still a better deal and has a nicer vibe too.“

“After a hike in the hills, or a day on the beach, I can’t imagine a better place for a bite and a few beers, The simple but tasty dishes and very good beers from Yorocco are reason enough to pay a visit but the ambiance is what makes this place special. Can’t wait to go again.“

“Indeed a tiny brewpub located in the middle of nowhere (Hayama). Narrow corridor-like standing bar. 2 taps on so far (with room for more), amber and ipa, one-size serving only, fairly amateurish quality still which makes the pricing a bit high. A handful of dry snacks are also available. Work in progress (a lot of), best of luck.“

“Tiny, tiny place in the middle of nowhere, about 30 minutes’ walk from Beach Muffin. Just opened, so take this with a grain of salt. Very small, narrow tasting area was a bit claustrophobic. 2 beers on tap were ok, but not all that well sorted out. Prices, at ¥700 per glass (240ml?) were very expensive for house brew. Hope he gets things sorted a bit better. If you come from Beach Muffin, take the bus, it’s only about 5 minutes that way.“

“Great cafe/bar with a hippy vibe. 5 taps although only 3 were on when we visited. Food was great with generous portions. I had the taco rice. Kind of off the beaten path so probably not super crowded, but a nice place to grab a beer in Kamakura and to try Yorocco beers.“

Magnetico (Bar)
4-1-19 YUKINOSHITA, KAMAKURA
“Lovely local bar in Kamakura, recenlty opened by a former Yorocco guy. Old wooden house, relaxing vibe, jazz vinyls being played in the background. Short but excellent tap selection of some top-notch japanese seasonals (Yorocco, Kyoto, Shonan, Ushitora...). Beers are served in 2 sizes, good prices but not pint size. Their short "soul" food menu is pretty tasty too and portions are generous. Super friendly service. Great place for brunch in the area, or on your way to Beach Muffin. Smoking from 3pm.“

“Large cafe with a covered garden terrace, located near Kamakura station. Laid-back atmosphere as long as you don’t mind mosquitoes. 4 taps of Kamakura brews on, including 2 seasonals. Probably the only place where you can get their beers on tap, unfortunately most of them are pretty mediocre. Served in 3 sizes, underwhelming glassware, high prices considering the quality. Their pizzas are quite popular too but would rather recommend Blue Room or Magnetico in the area for good beer and food. Opened through the day.“

“Wonderful old rustic Japanese house feel and the perfect place to experience Yorocco’s great beers. When I visited they only had 4 taps on but it seems like they usually have 5. The food was decent-sized light appetizer fare. Mexican tacos and nachos were really good. Staff is friendly and it’s a nice walk through the town of Zushi but fairly straightforward to reach the taproom. Also non-smoking!!“

“Popular restaurant/taproom near Fujisawa station. Most of the Shonan beer lineup is available (seasonals seem to run out quickly), served in 4 sizes, good value. “Nice local bar about a minute away from Tsujido station. Open space, central counter, probably barely fits a dozen. 10 taps of japanese micros, decent selection, served in 2 sizes, average prices. “Awesome local bar/dinner located in the Chigasaki neighborhood. Now up to 30 taps, great selection of japanese micros (Oni-densetsu, Kyoto, Fujizakura, Ushitora...) and a handful of Californian brews, all in good condition, average prices. Food is excellent too with a focus on grilled meat and several other tasty seasonal dishes. Friendly and timely service. This place is a true gem, probably top 5 contender for tap selection and food in the whole Kanto area. Make sure you go there thirsty and hungry and you shouldn’t be disappointed.“

“Located a little walk away from Zushi’s popular beach resort. Nice relaxed atmosphere, old wooden house, sofas, green plants. “This place is a hike to get to from Tokyo and Zushi station (12 min walk), but it is worth it. Very cool setting, like you are in an old Japanese house with lots of couches, dark wood and for better or worse, no air con. Food is vegan, and generally OK, but I have yet to meet anyone that disagrees about the fact they serve the best french fries in Japan. Amazing. Now the beer. Five Yorocco taps that rotate weekly. You can get fairly reasonably priced (for Japan) growler fills as well. Friendly staff. This is basically the place you need to go, during the weekend, to try Yorocco beers.“

“The taproom for Yorocco beer. Beautiful building, vegan cafe with 5 taps of Yorocco (all 5 not available at all times, generally at the weekend, but check the brewery website before you go). During normal cafe opening hours they only seem to have one tap, but at weekends they expand to 5. At least in summer. All beers ¥800, and one of the few places you can drink Yorocco. Had a great time here and will be back, even if it is a bit of a hike from Tokyo (bit over one hour and then a 15 minute walk).“

Nawlins BBQ House (Restaurant)

“Two story venue with seating I heard for up to 100. The first floor has a bar counter, and a few tables, but upstairs has ton of seats. Has capacity for up to 25 beers on tap, but since it just opened a month ago, its not fully bustling yet and taps were limited to about 12-15 mainly Japanese brews, but a bit too heavy Baird (though I know once more taps flow, overall taps wont be so heavy towards Baird). Excellent house beer made by Baird that we tried up against some other smoked beers and it was the clear winner. The food was top top notch. I will say hands down the best American BBQ you will find in Japan with some great Cajun food. If you like BBQ or Cajun it is worth the trek from Tokyo. The spacious seating upstairs is great and makes it awesome for parties. Very friendly staff. The beer I had was good, but the food is what really stood out. Once more taps get going I think this place will be one of the best in Tokyo/Yokohama area. At this point though, not worth a trek from Tokyo just to drink beer.“

“After wandering around looking for the place I found this lovely bar. Dark wood interior with a few tables + a bar on the ground floor and more seating upstairs. The food smelled good and all taps now seem to be in use. The staff were friendly and knew their Shonan beers. They had a few bottles to go(just regulars though, not the cool stuff they had on keg). Just a great stuff, they don’t have tasters but they do have tasting sizes(about 300 yen) up to pitchers(about 2000 yen). A must if in the area.“

“I really liked this place, I popped into the cafe where the atmosphere was like a coffee shop but the staff were nice and the 800 yen tasting set was good value. They had many of their beers on offer: Yuzu Kahori, Kazamatsuri Stout, Pils, Ale, Brown. I guess they had leftovers from fall-lucky me! Solid beers, worth a stop if in the area.“

“Didn’t go to the restaurant here, but over the road is a big fishy supermarket type thing and they have three taps available and a small drinking area. They also had five bottles (admittedly only two different ones from the taps). Prices are ok. Takeaway bottles ¥525. Drinking on site is in two sizes of plastic cup, round about ¥400 and ¥500. Can’t remember exactly. Given that I was drinking in a fish supermarket and had heard not so much good stuff about the beers, I was really pleasantly surprised. It was kind of fun to pop in, have the three beers on tap and then get the others to take away. Really easy to get to from Odawara or Hakone Yumoto too. Seems to be one of the few places you can actually buy Hakone beer in the Hakone area bizarrely.“

“Really liked this place. Bit of a walk from the station but we got a cab as it was raining pretty hard. They had 6 of their beers on and a few bottles. Prices are good. Was pretty happy with the ¥505 medium size but when I ordered a pint of their stout to finish was astounded that a glass that big could only be ¥610. Must be at least UK pint size. Food was nice too and pretty reasonable. Friendly staff and good service plus interesting decor! Some of the stronger beers are a little bit more expensive. I think the Hopslave was ¥900 for one of the big glasses which is still a pretty good price. Think there was a ¥300 service charge but maybe that was because we were at a table. Can soon make that up though. Don’t have much reason to come to Atusgi but if I am passing by will definitely come again.“

“Visited in January 2012 with Tim Maloney and Chewy. Restaurant and bar, with seated tables outside. It’s got a bit of a feel to it like those Japanese branded family restaurants, and has about 3 or 4 of the Hakone beers on tap and a shop selling a few more of the beers. So not really atmospheric. More of a daytime place to visit. I bought a selection pack of five beers. They also have seasonal beers available at different times of year. Yuzu beer when I was there.“

“We came with kids and spent the first part of our time downstairs in the "kids room." That’s awesome because it puts the noisy guys in an area with toys that won’t bother everyone else, but the problem is that this area seems like an afterthought. As such there was an odd odor in the air like there was a moisture problem. Initially service was a challenge because the lack of a bell, but soon the staff was watching us attentively. Later, when the kids left, we moved upstairs and found it to be a lovely space. We mostly drank pitchers of the Bitter which I found to be really light and refreshing. We also had a Pilsner which didn’t really distinguish itself (at least with me at that moment) and then I had a glass of the Weiss which I thought was a great beer - cloudy and slightly fruity. The food was also good, with the wood-fired pizzas coming in with a good taste. I can’t say anything stood out too much, but it was good. Too bad this place is in never-never land!“

Good variety of Shonan beers, will definitely head back to try them all as we were only making a flying visit. Bottles for takeaway available too. 4 types when we were there. “Lovely restaurant with ground floor dedicated to the bar/kitchen and small amount of seating. Upstairs is more open with large tables perfect for sharing with friends and strangers. The draw here though is the beers. Shonan is very impressive. Easily some of the top beers in Japan. Had no dramas with staff - they were courteous and attentive. “Excellent. A few minutes walk from Fujisawa station. 11 taps plus one hand pump when we were there. Beer was average to world class - Belgian Stout (as far as I am concerned). Most beers were solidly above average. Excellent service - we bitched about the head on the Belgian Stout and instantly they took the beer away and filled it up properly. Nice atmosphere. We went there after hiking near Hakone and clearly we were not the only hikers to stop over there on the way back from Tokyo. Lots of wood and exposed concrete on first floor, but well designed. 2nd floor has a lot more tables, but feels more cramped. Downside of this place - no English Menu and take out bottles are limited to three varieties - I was REALLY hoping they had the Belgian Stout in bottles. Still, this place is top notch and if you love beer and you are going to Hakone or anywhere not too far south of Yokohama, this is a must visit. I was very impressed and unfortunately, I will need to spend money to come back, all the way from Tokyo. Top notch.“

“Nice ambiance in this place, woody and cozy. Pretty much the same food menu as at the Trattoria Mokichi. At least twice as many Shonan beers, though, makes this much the better place for beery visits. Two negatives. The staff when we went was horrible: scowling faces, really sloppy pours, bitching about their job in front of us. Ruined the visit. Second is that 5 taps were open. What a waste! I hope they eventually fill them with guest beers. Still new, though, so I hope they can work out the kinks because Shonan on tap is wonderful and this place is much more convenient than the brewery.“

“Beautiful place with good food. Beers are in excellent condition, but rather sloppily poured by disinterested part-timers. They only had the three regulars and one seasonal when we went, which was a bit fewer than I hoped for. Pils was supreme. “Right across from the station there is a restaurant and a separate little shop selling Hakone Beer on tap and in cans. The resturant has an all you can eat and drink for about ¥3200, and the food looks good. Only three beers usually available, Pils (good), Ale (not so), and a seasonal. We stopped in the store and tried the three. If you are in the area, should be good to eat and drink here, otherwise, probably not worth a special trip. Very fast by train from Odawara.“

“Visited this care of Tim Maloney on pub crawl around the outer areas of Tokyo. This was a 5 min walk from Chigasaki station and if I hadn’t known where it was, up some stairs next to a vegetable grocers, I would have missed it. Inside is quite sophisticated with barmen in waistcoats and nice understated decor. Beer list is a really good range of Japanese craft beer and seasonals. Pints are served in British style pint glasses and right up to the pint mark, so you get your moneys worth. Prices are around 980 yen for a pint. List features about 20 beers so the range is pretty damn good. Would definitely come here again as the service was good and the beer quality fantastic. I had a Kinoni Pale Ale which was in top top condition. Highly recommended.“

“Restaurant which is part of the Shonan brewery. Serves wood fired pizzas, bratwurst dishes and tasty Italian salads and sides, all alongside the brewery beer list. Food is very good and thank god the pizzas are decent sized and not tiny like most pizzas in Japan. Beer choices cover about 5 of the breweries options and you can also ask for bottles from the counter shop in the lobby. Altogether it’s a great combination of good food and good beer, with excellent attentive service and a really nice rustic wooden restaurant location.“
