78 /100 SJØOMRÅDET Visited December 2022. You must make booking of the table advance because they have only one opening day with three time slots, laws in Svalbard are strict (I needed pasport number for make booking). In taproom are only few tables. Most of their beers on tap and some in cans including imperial stouts edition. It was hurry tasting for only two hours for so many beers, they are not allowed to sell them with you.
Yeah! Finally the northernmost brewery! |
72 /100 Nordpolet (Beer Store) SVALBARDBUTIKKEN Maybe 150 different bottles of beer including about 50 Norwegian, 10 from local Svalbard bryggeri, about 10 Christmas beers this time. Good prices. Beware, as a tourist you need to show airplane boarding pass. |
74 /100 Svalbar (Bar) OPPOSITE TOURIST INFORMATION Probably the world's most northerly craft ale bar. Smart modern bar with excellent attentive service. Three beers on draft from Svalbard and a bigger range in cans & bottles. I had the Pale Ale which was good and the Barley Wine which was lovely and perfect for the climate. As with other places in Longyearbyen, prices are very high by UK standards but lower than mainland Norway. Didn't try the food but it looked good. |
64 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL Very surprised to find this place inside the Radisson Hotel. A rather cosy little pub with good service from the Aussie barman. The beer range has improved since Tim Webb's visit with 3 from Svalbard including the lovely Spitzbergen IPA and 3 others from Norwegian brewers. Prices are, of course, high (£8 for 1/2 litre) but lower than mainland Norway. The food was good too and very good value. |
82 /100 SJØOMRÅDET Located at the edge of the town, about half an hour slow walk from the centre. Taproom is only open on Fridays from 6pm to midnight (although you can book a tour with tasting on some other days as well). Recommended to book a table, because it gets full of tourists (and probably locals as well). Nice, modern, industrial looking place, overlooking the brewery itself. The staff was nice and pretyt informative. Offers about 8 taps (prices 55 NOK for 330ml beer) and about 8 cans as well. Flight of 5 beers (pre-set) available for 150 NOK - everybody seemed to go after that option, at least at first. Definitely a place to visit for some good beer and good atmopshere in the cold North. |
64 /100 Svalbar (Bar) OPPOSITE TOURIST INFORMATION The place to go for a beer on Svalbard. Located in the "centre" of town. Opens at 4 pm and it was full of people throughout the day. Prices are Norwegian, so expect to pay up nicely for a fun night out. But considering where you are, pretty decent place. |
62 /100 Nordpolet (Beer Store) SVALBARDBUTIKKEN The only place to buy beer on Svalbard, right next to the Coop shop (which also carries a handfull of low ABV beers). Selection of Norwegian macro brews with prices between 15-20 NOK. Some common imports, pretty fair selection as well as some other Norwegian craft beers (Amundsen, Lervig, Aegir, Nogne) - prices between 70 and 140 NOK. And they also carry local Svalbard Brewery beers with a fair price around 40 NOK. You don't need to show the plane ticket (or at least I didn't have to on either occasion). Considering the location, the place is a real beer heaven. |
58 /100 Coal Miners’ Bar & Grill (Bar) NYBYEN Decent burgers, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff.Wouldn’t go too much out of my way to get here, but as we stayed here it was quite convenient. Located almost on top of Nybyen so about a 20 minutes walk from the "center" of Longyearbyen. |
52 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL Lovely smooth hotel bar with skins on the seats on the terrace and low light inside. But what is it with these places that they see no need to stock the local beers like Svalbard’s IPA ands Stout for example, or a stock of better Norwegian independents from the mainland? It underestimates the tastes of their guests I feel. |
70 /100 Karls-Berger Pub (Bar) LOMPENSENTERET A compulsory visit while on the island. You come here for the 1000 spiritous liquors, including 200 single malts, a similar number of vintage armagnacs and cognacs, plain vodkas, more entertaining akvavits, and the fact that it has no windows, like you are drinking in a coal mine in an old coal mining town. Beer is three draughts from Svalbard, |
86 /100 Svalbar (Bar) OPPOSITE TOURIST INFORMATION THE place to drink on Svalbard right now. Scored highly for its achievements for being so remote. The supply chain is tenuous. They don’t have street names here so just head for the village centre, near Svalbard Hotel, the Co-Op, Tourist Information and the shops. Comfortable, with the (former) coal mining ambience of the town. Impossibly good beer list for this latitude. Local Svalbard Bryggeri x 4 and rising; Nøgne Ø x 6; Haandbryggeriet x 3; Ægir; Mikkeller x 3; To Øl; Edge from Spain x 4; BrewDog x 2; Rodenbach Grand Cru & Duchesse de Bourgogne. Daily specials plus burgers. Shame about the music but you can’t have everything. |
64 /100 Coal Miners’ Bar & Grill (Bar) NYBYEN How do you rate ambience and beer selection in a place that is 800 miles from the North Pole, one mile from its nearest brewery and 400 miles from the second nearest? They have three beers from Svalbard Bryggeri and three from Brooklyn. The rest are a bit naff. Food is fairly accomplished but won’t set the world on fire - but then they are not really on the shopping routes here. They could do without the intensely annoying non-stop easy-lissning music. |
50 /100 Karls-Berger Pub (Bar) LOMPENSENTERET This is a place tht is quite famous for its enormous selection of booze. This is bacause of the tax system at Svalbard (not excisting). Paradise for drunk tourists. At my visit they had TWO different pale lagers. Glad to se that they have a little bit more now. Apart for the low amount of beer, this is a cousy and nice place. |
44 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL Quite ordinary hotel bar. Fair praises and not much of a selection. Seems like someone has been drinking all the remotely interesting beer up here, only about 10 different on bottle and still four on tap - Erdinger, Mack and some of the most common imports like Guinness and Corona no traces of either Nøgne Ø, Lervig, Ægir, Coisbo or Orval). Only remotely interesting beer was ’Gotlands Sleepy Bulldog Pale Ale’ on tap. Food was okay and beer selection was still the largest we saw up here, but nothing to write home about. |
32 /100 Nordpolet (Beer Store) SVALBARDBUTIKKEN Still about 20 beers, mostly cans from Mack and Ringnes, a couple of the most common imports as Guinness, Corona and Newcastle Brown Ale. Only intersting looking beer was ’To Tårn Polar Beer’ which seems to be just relabeled ’To Tårn Belgisk Wit’ with a fancy looking label. Really cheap compared to mainland Norway (about 7-10 for the Norwegian cans, about 15 for the imports, but 40 NOK for the ’Polar Beer’) Only place to get beer to take home and you need to bring the plane ticket to buy it. |
44 /100 Karls-Berger Pub (Bar) LOMPENSENTERET Pleasant and relaxed atmosphere and a great selection of the stronger stuff, but beer selection was not much to brag about. About five different bottles (three standard from BrewDog and then I think it was Guinness (can) and Corona) No traces of Sierra Nevada or Ugelris when I visited. Didn’t expect much, but a little bit more of a beer selection would have been nice when they have such a huge selection of other stuff. |
58 /100 Karls-Berger Pub (Bar) LOMPENSENTERET Karlsberger Pub is located inside the Lompensenteret shopping mall, along the only pedestrian street in Longyearbyen. Apparently it was voted the 6th coolest bar in the world and offers an amazing 1000 types of hard liquors, ranging from Armagnac and Congac to Gin, Whisky and Akevitt. They also offer a more limited range of beer, on tap just Mack but on bottle they offered Sierra Nevada, Nøgne Ø, Ugelris and BrewDog during my visit. If a good bar is what you’re looking for this is about the only proper one in Longyearbyen, with a more relaxed atmosphere than Barentz Pub. I did miss some more beers though, after one visit I had exhausted their selection. Last visited: 2015-03-24. |
66 /100 Kroa (Restaurant) VEI 223 NR. 6 Kroa is a restaurant located along the only pedestrian street in Longyearbyen, with a pretty good bar offering a good selection of cognac and whisky but also some decent beers (the bartender told me they plan to extend the beer menu soon, adding Gotlands Bryggeriet among others). Inside, the restaurant looks very rustic, built like an old trappers hut with worn wooden plank walls and old trappers weapons hanging along the walls. Solid wooden tables and benches completes the design. I really liked the atmosphere though the place could get a bit packed at night. I ate there several nights and the food was always plentiful and tasty. On tap they offered Mack Arctic and Mack Bayer while on bottle they offered several from Nøgne Ø, Sierra Nevada and BrewDog, in proper glassware, as well as Timmermans Kriek Retro Lambicus. Not bad! 60 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL Barentz Pub is located inside Radisson Blu in Longyearbyen and looks and feels like a hotel bar, usually with a majority of the guests being tourists from all over the planet. But it does have, at the present, the best beer selection in Longyearbyen and a pretty good menu, offering a good variety of foods from tasty pizza and burger (Barentzburger!) to steak, soup and pasta. During my visit the bar stocked 30-40 different beers on bottle, though many were industrial lagers (Mack and Aass offered a dozen) I also found a couple of styles each from Norwegian craft breweries Ægir, Lervig, Nøgne Ø and Berentsen. The pub also offered three different Coisbo, naturally inlcuding their Polar Beer, as well as two from French brewery Demory. And you probably won’t find Orval farther north than this place! So, despite the lack of pub feel I did spend a couple of hours here enjoying the food and some good beers. Last visited: 2015-03-24 |
54 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL It’s a normal hotel bar, really, with a few international beers. The most exciting is Orval, but they do have a couple of other choices, too. |
66 /100 Peisen Bar (Bar) MARY ANN’S POLARRIGG hyggelig og koselig |
50 /100 Nordpolet (Beer Store) SVALBARDBUTIKKEN det morsomste her er prisene :-) |
48 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL Decent Hotel bar, without being anything else. Not only lager beer |
68 /100 Peisen Bar (Bar) MARY ANN’S POLARRIGG The largest selection of Norwegian beers can be found here at Peisen. It is located inside MaryAnn’s Polarigg hotel, a quirky shambles of a lodging located on the Western side of Longyearbyen (west of the creek that runs through town). It’s about a 15 min walk from the Radisson. Walk toward the waterfront, then West, then away from the waterfront. A really quirky decor and cool greenhouse glass makes for a fun place to laugh and watch the 24-hour sun! |
54 /100 Nordpolet (Beer Store) SVALBARDBUTIKKEN Crummy selection of about 20 beers. Mack. No Aass. Unremarkable. You have to bring your plane ticket, which is hard to do in the age of eTickets. I didn’t ask what exactly they wanted me to bring b/c I didn’t care enough to buy their beer. The store is located inside the Coop grocery store and closes at 6pm even when the Coop doesn’t close until 8pm. Beware. There is a surly tool of a guy at a desk checking your plane ticket - be sure to give him some attitude for me. |
66 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL The best selection of Euro beer in Svalbard, though I didn’t make it into the bars in Barentsburg to make sure (they presumably drink a lot of vodka in Barentsburg, not beer). Barentz has Erdinger Hefe and Dunkel, Estrella, San Miguel. About 15 bottles. Mack was the only Norwegian beer on tap. It has the nicest scene, and is less meat markety than SvalBar or Karl’s Pub.
If you really want to go off the beaten path, find Funken Bar located in Huset or instead go to Peisen Bar located in MaryAnn’s Polarigg to see where the locals go. Peisen has the most Norwegian beers (about eight). |
84 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL Nice place on Svalbard... |
48 /100 Nordpolet (Beer Store) SVALBARDBUTIKKEN This is on the edge of the world, and you have to bring your plane ticket before you can buy booze. Good selection of fine wines, some very rare cognacs. Beer is mostly from Norwegian Mack brewery, but there are some beers from international macros, too. A few Dutch discount beers. Very cheap, as this is a duty free area. |
50 /100 Barentz Pub (Bar) INSIDE THE RADISSON BLU POLAR HOTEL This would not be considered for inclusion if it was anywhere else in the world, but it can justify a claim to be the Northernmost pub in the world. It is located in Longyearbyen on Svalbard. It is a hotel pub, with Mack pilsener and Mack Bayer on tap. Among the bottled beers I found Goose Island IPA plus three Erdinger beers, which is fairly good considering the logistics involved in getting the beer up there.
There are cozier pubs in town, but they are located slightly longer south and have more focus on either cognac or food.
And they have a special locker where you have to put your gun before entering the pub. |
