“On the north side of Lydiate just before the suburbs give way to the countryside, this is an historic pub that probably served a much wider countryside economy when it was built. Nowadays it clearly has a good local clientele, families come here, and visitors such as myself that come to simply enjoy the heritage of the place. There's a large car park accessed from the main road. A central doorway leads into a multi-roomed affair, all fairly full with one internal room given over to the live football as Liverpool were playing at the time. The tiny service area is against the front window to the left as you walk in and manages to fit two hand pumps, one of which sells the Scotch Piper ale - but this is possibly a Marston rebadge.“

“Oldest Inn in Lancashire, Great beer, great locals, fabulous place for a pint on a cold evening when the fires are lit. Furniture looks as old as the pub. Once reputed to serve the best Guiness outside Ireland, now serves a variety of guest beers since it detached itself from Burtonwood. Very warm welcome. Home of the Lydiate Hunt, last rumoured to have caught a fox in 1974 and a Golf Society in which a good handicap is "anything in the low 20’s". Worth a detour on a cold dark night. Wednesday evenings is biker’s night. 100’s of bikes turn up, mainly for a chat and a half of something.“
