74 /100 Beerhouse (Bar) 76A ST. MARYS ROAD Very decent modern place not for from MH rail station. It's crowded and hot, hot, hot in here on a Friday night, but it's worth it. There were about 16-18 taps operational on my visit: about 50% cask, 30% keg, 20% cider/perry. They tend toward the session-strength beers, which is fine, although ticking a succession of big beers won't be on the menu for you here. They tend toward dependable UK breweries such as Black Iris, Hart and Odyssey. Lots of local-ish stuff but they also had an Orkney beer which was new to me. Worth checking out! |
82 /100 Freemasons Arms (Bar) 101 ST MARY'S ROAD I only came here because the Beerhouse (q.v.) was closed for refurbishment. I'm glad I did. It's loud, spacious and brash but when you get to the bar... a few casks, about 10 keg and a good 25-30 bottles. Mostly the best of British craft served here. I jumped at the Magic Rock Bearded Lady Dessert Edition, but there's loads of Thornbridge, Wild Beer and Mad Squirrel to get stuck into. London prices, or at least not Leicester ones, so choose wisely or come on pay day. Don't miss this place out. |
90 /100 Beerhouse (Bar) 76A ST. MARYS ROAD Great place. Tucked away, seemingly in a car park, but not actually. It’s just behind St Mary’s Chippy, midway between the station and er the centre of the town. This is a 1.5 roomed shop type premise, with barrels, tubes, bar and seating all in one part. Rudimentary furnishings, which encapsulate a lovely DIY vibe. Great range of cask beers, mainly from Northants and Leicestershire. Craft kegs too, including Oakham’s latest BIPA, on my visit. Great staff - genuinely enthusiastic. Very friendly place. Might just be one of the best beer locations in the beautiful county of Leicestershire. |
72 /100 Sugar Loaf (JDW) (Bar) 18 HIGH STREET A long Spoons, with booths. Quite a few handpulls and a very handy high Street location. Slap bang next to my hotel as it happens (happened?). Light, warm. Hard to say anything particularly discerning or decisive really. |
58 /100 Sugar Loaf (JDW) (Bar) 18 HIGH STREET Centrally located Spooneria in M’kt H’bro’ as the classic hitchiker abbreviates.
Ok spoons to be fair, natural light at the front, longer than it is wide, comfortable decor.
Cask selection is so so but usually a couple of ticks.
I once let out a massive fart after Sunday lunch here, thereafter known as the MHFI (Market Harborough Fart Incident).
Stu Wells’s ex missus had to leave the building!
Ok spoons. |
64 /100 Sugar Loaf (JDW) (Bar) 18 HIGH STREET Set amongst some pretty buildings in the small centre of this market town it is perhaps one of the lesser pubs to drink in but remains a popular choice. It’s a one room affair with ordinary decor for this chain, but comfortable enough with some stalls across from the bar which is at the back. The curving bar at the rear serves real ale on two rows of pumps. |
