| 46 /100 STATION APPROACH “Located right next to Oakham train station entrance, this is a decent-sized brewpub with a good amount of Grainstore's beers mainly on cask, with a lager on keg. Took an hour detour from my route to find it was unfortunately closed for the week (google opening hours not updated), but staff were in the office upstairs and came down so I could buy some bottles to take out. I noticed there was a few ciders in cans and was told they make it themselves so bought them all. Only afterwards I realised they are made by Celtic Marches in Herefordshire who re-brand their own cider for various breweries all over the country. Don't really like being deceived like this and it kind of tainted my impression of them a bit. Pub itself was fine.“ |

Just for the ticks. Tickers gonna tick. It was a good stop between Cambridge and Leicester. Quiet on wednesday night with a few locals watching football. Nice service and local beers. Close to the Train Station so its a good place for a quick one between trains.

I usually hope for local ticks (i.e. Rutland) when I succumb to JDW, but alas there were none. A few guest needs dotted around, including a couple I haven't tried. So worth a stop, especially considering the dearth of good pubs in the town.“ |

Visited in late afternoon/ early evening and the place was packed - we barely managed to find a place to stand. Bit hard to get served. They had about ten casks on, not sure if they were all different beers. Also some cider and usual suspects on kegs. Beer was OKish, nothing too special. Good stop for a county place tick, otherwise wouldn't call it essential.“ |

They had plenty of offerings and provide sample trays of 3x3rds as well as have some bottles to go as well. Food was pretty good, but price was restaurant prices not pub grub. Well worth a stop and doubly good if you need Rutland county rating.“ |

It seems to concentrate on beers from guest breweries, although Tiger and a seasonal special are available. I had some Ascot and Beartown here, i.e. decent but not world-beating breweries. This seems to be the sort of place the locals seem to congregate, understandably so. Not the best place for Rutland ticks but a lovely boozer nonetheless.“ |

They have four cask pumpclips (nothing you can't get elsewhere, and the nearby Grainstore tap makes the GB Best redundant), and two keg beers from London Fields (now brewed by Trumans I believe). The atmosphere is decent enough but anyone looking to check out the local beer scene might be disappointed.“ |

Tucked away in the corner on a street towards the end of town and the furthest away from the station of the pubs on our route around Oakham but certainly one to get to if venturing beyond the Grainstore tap. A small but interesting selection of ales and box ciders available. Good service, friendly locals. Really nice old pub. My favourite of the places we got to after the tap.“ |

Nice cosy pub/restaurant/hotel, real fires, real ales, and very good service. Had a Grainstore beer on which wasn't on at the brewery tap. Saxby's ciders too. Worth checking out if wandering beyond the tap and into Oakham.“ |

| 78 /100 STATION APPROACH “Visited 16/10/2018. Passed by on the train many times but never had the time to pop in, very glad to have had the time to visit today. Really nice set up, good amount of Grainstore taps and bottles, about a dozen available plus a few guests. Beers are proudly traditional and deliberately not hop-forward which isn't for everyone's taste these days but they make decent brews though the wide range can be a little narrow as a result. Very friendly staff. Brewery tours with beer tasting and food combinations are available. Really enjoyable visit and will be sure to call in again when passing.“ |

Large room with a long central bar. 10 HP and one cider as well. Brewery kit at the right hand side, visible through glass doors. Big wooden beams, and some large red cylindrical iron columns for support of the 1.floor. Good athmosphere as well, well heated on a cold winter day.“ |

However you feel about Grainstore (I think they’re hit and miss but have some solid stuff), it’s a completionist’s paradise, and the surroundings are rustic-convivial-chic. It’s also nice to taste Grainstore’s beers outside of Spoons (which seem to be their main outlet). Small but decent Belgian bottle selection.“ |

Service is over-formal but friendly and efficient. Beer isn’t all that interesting: five cask ales but no keg/bottles/cans to speak of. The ales are from good breweries (Oakham, Abbeydale, Cotleigh, Nene Valley) but are all in the sessionable range. It’s part of the small Knead Pub chain who do decent boozers, although this doesn’t hit the relative heights of Stamford’s Tobie Norris (q.v.) and sadly no Rutland rates!“ |
| 74 /100 STATION APPROACH “The Grainstore brewery and tap room is right next to the railway station in an attractive brick barn originally used for storing grain prior to its dispatch by rail. It has a country harvest feel, with cottagey chairs and tables in a large open plan area running the length of the building, and there was a nice smell of malt as I went in. There were around ten hand pumps and the service was very friendly.

| 70 /100 Lord Nelson (Bar) 11 MARKET PLACE “Oakham is a pretty village and the tiny county seat of a very small county (Rutland). Everything is in keeping, and tucked away in the corner of a pocket sized market square - which nevertheless has two market crosses - is the Lord Nelson, an old and characterful multi-roomed pub. I sat close to the fireplace at an ancient work bench in the main bar, eschewing the rather uncomfortable looking church pews dotted about elsewhere. It’s a lovely place, full of olde worlde charm (and I was left wondering if it could possibly be the same place Gene visited as his description better fits the Wetherspoon pub in Oakham). There were five hand pumps with a reasonable selection of beers.

| 64 /100 55 HIGH ST “A nice Wetherspoon pub, formerly the British Legion building and greatly expanded at the back. It’s quite cheerful and has lots of different areas, including a children’s playroom and a patio. The bar front is rather unusual - it has multi-coloured drawers, like a huge long cabinet, but the handles are for show only. Oh, and the toilets (upstairs of course) were very nice. It was doing a roaring trade when I scraped in with just one minute to spare before they stopped taking breakfast orders. There were two banks of six hand pumps with a few local beers on offer and the service was friendly and efficient.

Only one serving bar but there had 5 cask ales available and 6 interesting keg fonts. A true ’Freehouse’ and my wife and I really liked the place. Friendly staff and good quality beers. Food looked good, but we didn’t eat.“ |
| 64 /100 55 HIGH ST “Visited on 15th March 2016 (during the Wetherspoons Spring Beer Festival). Eight cask ales and the usual keg fonts and bottled selection to be found in most Wetherspoons. This is a fairly small building for this chain, newly opened, clean, tidy and plenty of staff on my time in there. Staff pleasant and beer quality fine on my two beers. Cheap food as always. In other words a typical Wetherspoons (apart from the number of staff being so high).“ |

The brewery is visible through doors at the side/rear of the bar. I stopped by about 10 AM with the breakfast crowd, I’m very glad it was open that early. Staff helpfully walked me through each of the beers, set up a flight of three and arranged for some bottle sales as well. The beers were tasty enough, none too exciting, but nothing off. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they make ciders as well - three, in fact. Worth a lingering stop.“ |

| 76 /100 STATION APPROACH “This is the usual lunchtime stopping place when my mates and I go to the annual RAF Bomb Disposal Dinner at RAF Wittering. Although it is right next to the railway station one of us is always driving, pity. So many barrels outside we sometimes have trouble parking.
Basic and great inside and out: always a selection of their own beers available in cask form and a few bottles to take away. We have taken polly-pins with us too. The draught beers are never a let down and always in fine form. On our annual Friday visits the place is usually very quiet, often just us or a couple of others: not sure why, it must get busy at night?
Food is good and filling, staff friendly and always remember us (once a year visitors!).“ |
