60 /100 JOSE’S LANE
“A bit of a trek away from the main road, and whatever route you take you’ll be going down some narrow country lanes to get here. Clearly many do this though and it’s the only pub in this western extremity of the Exmoor National Park for some miles. It’s a large building on its own in a wooded valley with a walk from it that leads to the sea a mile or so away. It’s a multi-purpose place with a fairly traditional pub area at the front, although modernised in some of its touches, a more defined restaurant area at its rear where a second bar also exists and several rooms available for staying guests on the floors above. As it’s not a relatively new building it has an atmospheric earlier 20th century look about it. The ales are not extensive here, but at least they exist, with just the one Heddon Valley brew available on my visit and a couple of guests, as well as a real cider. There’s a few bottled options too but it’s mainly widely available Devon options than anything a ticker would be looking for, however given its remote location the selection is not to be sniffed at. There’s a front flagged patio and enough space on the road here to park without blocking anyones route, and a larger grassy area to the pubs rear, which is a slightly more attractive place to sup, but given the bar is in the small middle room at the front I imagine not many people find this area until they actually explore the building properly.“
