“This place is out in the middle of no where and took us a mountain journey to get there. It was almost an unreachable goal as no matter what the arrival time on the gps would get further away. Thanks Umberto and Co for hosting us and a great time! Not much going on in this town, stayed at a nice little hotel. Started drinking when they opened around 930. Franco and other locals showed up around 11 and things got interesting. Umberto cooked for us, food was very good. We ate way too much, we weren’t allowed to leave anything on the plate. Drank all night and had a great time joking with Franco and everyone. Too much fun to describe especially with the antics of the evening. We left at 530am with a heft tab and some great memories.“

“Thanks to Gene for showing us this place, Umberto and Co for hosting us and a great time! The drive there through the mountains is near unbearable, in fact it felt like we were chasing a floating castle from smb3 given that our gps kept adding time on no matter how far we traveled. Nothing to do in town, so we hung at a few cheap bars, then started drinking around 930 here. Dark wood everywhere, dark lighting, small front bar with tables in the back. Franco showed up, other locals, things really started getting going around 11. Umberto cooked for us, one of the best meals of our trip, divine pairings with beer, the sausage and bruocsella 1900 was incredible, and the lorgo (sp?) to die for. We ate and drank through the night, gorging ourselves while joking in English and Italian (not me). We left at 530am after an hour of DJ game and way too much beer. Would love to return, but the remote location makes this seem near impossible.“

“Nice place in a strange location. Extremely difficult to spot from the outside. In the inside is all wood and tons of uber rare/old bottles which Umberto (the owner) brought back from his many trips. Food is standard pub on the selection (but really high quality), but if you him some notice in advance he can cook for you a delicious meal. And all based on and served with beer, obviously. Service is very good and knowledgeable, but can become slow when the place gets crowded (as it often is). Selection is simply outstanding, with gems from all over the world, and rare one offs too. The owner is on of the most knowledgeable and passionate I’ve ever known, a great guy. This is place is definitely worth going out of your way to get to. I’ll be back hopefully soon.“

“Goblin Pub is definitely worth going way out of your way for in the middle of Tuscany in a resort town called Pavullo nel Frignano, which definitely requires a GPS to locate. Hours here are also very sporadic so best to call ahead (call Umberto) to see if they are open. IIRC, we arrived there on a weekday (Wednesday or Thursday) and it was open from 8pm or so until whenever you’re ready to go home. Goblin Pub is very much the traditional beer dive with a very homely feel and small but impressive tap list. There are about six rotating Italian micros on tap with 6+ static macros like some English bitters, Guinness, and run of the mill stuff. The beer cellar is quite impressive with everything from 1970’s Chimay to one-off Cantillons. This is not a place to go so you can try to order Don Quijote. That beer is very rare and very special, so it is not actively for sale here so don’t expect Umberto to cough one up for you just because you are present. But, have a good time and get to know the owner and really fall in love with the place, and hey, you might get lucky ;) Food here was prepared by Umberto especially for us and the meal was one of the best I’ve had in a long time: five courses, all prepared with beer in some way, shape or form. Antipasti, grapefruit/bell pepper salad, pot roasted short ribs, cheese platters, wild dessert. Really is an amazing place.“

“What a fantastic pub run by a fantastic guy, Umberto. I made a long visit on a night in May and it was well worth it. Great beer signs and bottles all over the bar and a fantastic selection of lambic and other hard to find beers on tap and bottle. Umberto cooks up some great burgers as well! Hard to find but well worth a trip if you are anywhere near Bologna or Florence.“

“Nice specially beer bar in a scenic resort town. Umberto the owner is a true beer lover and put all his passion to good use in the pub. The beer menu reminds of days in Belgium, its long and filled with brews from all over the world. He even provided an assorted cheese tray to assist with the cleansing the palate. This is a must stop!“

“This place has been a passion of Umberto since 1990 (and an idea probably long before that). It is chock full of amazing lambics and geuzes, local and regional beers on draught, and amazing people. Umberto is one of the friendliest and outgoing people I’ve met, his English is perfect, and he is an amazing host. This place is definitely worth going out of your way to find (the sign is hard to see, but a GPS will bring you right to the front door). Our second visit was even more amazing than the first! Umberto prepared a very special meal for us, all prepared with local beers. Locals were extremely friendly and interesting, Definitely a great pilgrimage place for amazing food, fantastic beers, and the best people!“
