“Visited for the pub quiz on Monday 05/12/16. Single L shape roomed, with dividing wall, village local. Plain walls and wooden floors fit well with what i presume is a 19th century building. This was my first visit here and on my arrival I was intrigued to see a banner on the outbuilding in the car park proclaiming the new ’Craft Beer Range’ ! This is no London style multi tap house as you’d imagine in rural Bucks but I was pleasantly surprised to see a dozen or so ’craftier’ bottles and cans ... think Punk, Lagunitas IPA, some Crafty Dan offerings but more so a guest craft keg tap which was Tiny Rebel Cwtch on my visit at a very reasonable £4.50 a pint. 5 cask lines offered beers from relatively local breweries with Vale, Binghams and Marlow represented with a few different styles including a mild (Vale Black Swan). Service was prompt and friendly. The place was doing a brisk trade, in fact it was packed due to the regular monthly pub quiz, mix of locals, average age 55/60. We did well to come joint 5th from 9 in the quiz bearing in mind we were by far the youngest team with an average age around 40. Pub quiz was a reasonable £6 per head including a burger and chips dinner. Dog friendly, Flo Doge loved barking at the Quiz Master when he came round the tables! Overall a great little local with a number of beers on offer. Not in the prime walking area of the Chilterns but some good walks offered in nearby Penn Woods.“

“Visited for lunch on Saturday 21/05/16. 18th Century boozer located in the village of Penn Street. Effectively one large single room with a number of small partitions and annexes with a wood beam timber ceiling. Popular with walkers the place was doing a booming trade for lunch and the food is the main draw here for me. We had an excellent sharing platter which was laden with meat and cheese, a basket of different breads, home made hummus and crisps and all for just £14.95. Beer wise Hit Or Miss is tied to H&W and as such 3 cask beers from them including a seasonal which I actually added to RB myself. Unusual to see a Hall & Woodhouse pub in Bucks and I felt it worth adding because, upon enquring at the bar, they always carry the latest seasonal offering. Overall, not a go do beer destination but a proper old English village pub dating back to the 1790’s, great food and well kept beers that may yield a tick for you.“
