54 /100 KWANGBOK DEPARTMENT STORE, 3RD FLOOR
“One of the premier department stores in Pyongyang, notable for two things. First is the grocery store on the 1st floor, which is one of the best places to buy bottles of North Korean beer. Also, on the third floor there is a stall pouring beer made on-site. It's decent beer, and the food court is one of the only chances you'll have to really interact with the locals. The beer costs basically nothing and is solid by local standards.“

“Nice wood interior, multiple taps, big screen TV. It's all pretty normal, a rarity in the DPRK. They had 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and Wheat on tap on our visit, which allowed us to sample a fairly wide range. Probably the best place in Pyongyang to do that with the Taedonggang beers. Service was good, food fairly good as well. The beer wasn't as good - the #1 was variable within the span of our visit, and both dark ones were a bit soupy. But overall a good visit.“

“We were able to tour the brewery and chat with the brewer, who's been there for 20 years. Apparently all-malt, but they serve it direct from the tank so it's really yeasty and doughy. The hops are from DPRK, but you can't really taste them, which is about par for the course in the country. The beer ends up being pretty pleasant, and of course most people end up staying at the Yanggakdo so it's a fairly easy brew to try. Weird that they only serve it at the pub, but not in any of the hotel's other venues, but no big deal.“

56 /100 KWANGBOK STREET
“A restaurant loosely connected with Korea International Travel Agency (KITC), the state-run North Korean travel agency which regularly brings its tour groups there (but has denied to own or run the place). The restaurant brews its own beer and is therefore listed on RAB as KITC Brewery, a name nobody in Pyongyang has ever heard of. Located at the beginning of Kwangbok Street, on the upper floor of Mangyongdae Tourism Souvenir Shop (만경대관광기념품상점). They also brew their own Makkolli. Good Korean food and friendly staff.“

“Not a microbrewery as the name might suggest but a beer bar which serves several kinds of Paulaner (imported) in addition to local Taedonggang. Located in the basement of Haemaji Shopping Centre in downtown Pyongyang, this place is very stylish even by international standards. Unfortunately, during my visit I was the only guest, and instead of the advertised 5 Paulaner and 7 Taedonggang beers, they had only 1 from each brewery on tap. The menu includes some Western dishes but I tried the grilled beef (소고기적쇠구이) which was very good. Noisy North Korean television provided entertainment for the lonely waitresses and jangled my nerves. Recommended for its curiosity factor only.“

“Actually called Taedonggang Restaurant No. 3 (대동강3식당) and situated at Juchetap Street, opposite the Juche Tower, this is an upmarket restaurant belonging to the Taedonggang Brewery. It claims to serve all 7 Taedonggang brews but normally only no. 2 and a dark beer are available. Food is good but expensive and includes Western dishes such as sausages and steaks. There is a pharmacy at the first floor selling all sorts of imported drugs. “

“A small restaurant inside Pyongyang’s bowling alley, the Pyongyang Gold Lane, which serves its own beer. The quality of the beer seems to vary considerably. During my visit, I found it quite ok.“

“In the course of the renovation of the Koryo Hotel in April 2017, the microbrewery was moved from the hotel lobby to the adjacent Koryo Restaurant (고려식당). Two beers on tap, a yellow and a black one. On my visit, the yellow one was simply excellent. Beers are served in a cozy bar on the first floor right next to the tanks, and there is a restaurant on the second floor. Visited mostly by locals.“

66 /100 YONGUNG STREET, SOSONG DISTRICT
“Located directly at the river oposite to the war museum ("Victorious Fatherland Liberation Museum") with the USS Pueblo. Taedonggang 1-7 available. As this is a workers pub the beer is cheap, around 0,70€-0,80€ for 0,5l. You’ll get some baked wheat snacks for free. Limited opening hours, only late afternoon to early evening. No seats, only bar tables which are way to small for european hights. Still a good alternative to the Tadonggang Bar (all taps are working, cheaper beer, better curiosity factor).“

“Taedonggang 1-7 available normaly. One cooler was defective at my visit so only #2, #4 and #6 were available. Modern bar with dark wood, stylish for north korean standards.“

Pyongyang Shop (Grocery Store)
MUNSU-DONG, TAEDONGGANG DISTRICT
“It may be a good chance that I have rated this under the incorrect entry but it does sound familiar to the place that I visited. As per Moravius’ experience, the supermarket / department store stocks four local lagers (including a dark lager) along with a dozen or so imported macro beers. There is a booth outside where you can exchange Chinese Reminbi for North Korean Won to spend inside the store and get those scoops.“

“After five days spent in DPRK’s north east, it was fun to finally try a local beer that wasn’t Taedonggang! There’s a good chance you’ll stay in Yanggakdo Hotel when visiting Pyongyang, as most tour companies will use this foreigner friendly hotel situated on Yanggak Island. The brewery bar is right by the hotels’ reception area. Inside it’s a rather dark and non-descript setting, but once you see the other areas of the hotel it just...works. There’s one house beer available along with a couple of locally brewed bottled beers. It all comes dirt cheap. Perfect for priming yourself for a loooong night of karaoke in the bar.“

“A new, upmarket restaurant in downtown Pyongyang, opposite the Sunrise in Changjon Street. Excellent Korean food (pulgogi) and three own, rather mediocre beers, brewed in a tiny brewery which the staff said was imported from Germany. Worth a try if you happen to visit Pyongyang. Address in Korean: 평양 중구역 경상동(창전거리)“

“Small restaurant with its own brewpub in Mansudae Area at the very centre of Pyongyang, also known as Pyonghattan. In the same shopping mall as Sunrise but not part of Sunrise. Two beers on tap, a drinkable "yellow" and a still drinkable "black". The fermentation tanks are visible behind the bar. Worth a visit if you manage to persuade your minders to accompany you to this place. Ask for 은정종합봉사소 맥주집.“

“Who would imagine that there is a brewpub in a hotel in Pyongyang. Well, there is! There is only one type of beer on tap, a malty brown ale, served directly from the fermenters that are behind the bar. Also Yaedong Gang and Pyong yang beer are available in bottle. Staff barely speaks English and the bar is normally empty, but it is the best you can do for a night there.“

Pyongyang Shop (Grocery Store)
MUNSU-DONG, TAEDONGGANG DISTRICT
“This is the place to go for North Korean beer (that is, if you ever have a chance to visit the DPRK). Probably the best beer selection in Pyongyang. Stores the usual North Korean lagers (Taedonggang, Ryongsong, Ponghak) and occasionally a black beer from one of these breweries, a small selection of Japanese beers (Sapporo, Kirin, Asahi), the ubiquitous Heineken, and a changing selection of German mass beers, sometimes even including a Weizen or a Dunkelweizen. Bottles and cans are for takeaway only - this is a grocery store, not a restaurant. Also known as the Diplo in the expat community, it is situated inside the diplomatic village, next to the German Embassy.“

“Stayed at the Yanggakdo Hotel for 6 nights between August and September 2014. During my 18 days in the motherland I explored many of the different bars and micropubs in the Hotels. This was perhaps the most ’professional’ yet one of the most expensive. Costs 1.1 euro for beer here, far cheaper places elsewhere. Not bad beer though!“

“Stayed at this hotel in summer 2012. The bar was nothing special but they did have one beer that was brewed on site, alongside a couple of bottles from North Korea. Nothing else though from outside NK of course! Service was prompt, didn’t have any food and the beer was extremely cheap.“

“Didn’t actually realise there was a microbrewery here until my last night (of 6) in Pyongyang, as I had been drinking in the revolving restaurant on the top floor on other nights (1 euro longnecks!). This was where the tour groups seemed to congregate which made for an interesting night; 2 beers on tap and they weren’t terrible.“

52 /100 3RD FLOOR RAKWON DEPARTMENT STORE, CHANGWANG STREET
“This was one of the more interesting places I’d been for a beer, simply because I wasn’t expecting a microbrewery in North Korea. On the day I visited only 2 beers, but it was pretty quiet and laid back (a lot more so than a lot of South Korean bars I’d been to). Would rate it a 20 for the novelty factor, but that would be a little unfair.“

“Restaurant & microbrewery on the 3rd floor of the Rakwon Department Store. Restaurant has good Korean Food. Microbrewery brews 4 beers, only one available when I was there. Beer I had was OK. Good place to go for a meal“

“Large twin tower hotel in Central Pyongyang. Has in house microbrewery with 2 of its own beers & bottled Heineken. Very quiet for its size, satisfactory service. Good place to try North Korean Microbrewery beer.“
