56 /100 CITC Liquors (Beer Store) MAIN ROAD, AVARUA This is a liquor and wine store and distributor, which gets basically the entire stock of the local Matutu brewery, as well as a varied selection of NZ and EU macros. I was able to find the Matutu Pale Ale when the brewery and every bar and restaurant I tried were out. It’s walking distance, more or less, from the airport, just head counterclockwise. Or you can take the local anticlockwise bus. |
54 /100 ARA TAPU, TIKIOKI, TITIKAVEKA This is a very small brewery, looked like essentially a one man operation, based on my very short visit. Steady parade of customers tasting beers and buying T-shirts. They had a coconut porter to taste, and their lager. They had just run out of their pale ale, and the ship that delivers their malt once every two weeks was delayed, so they were awaiting an air freight delivery before brewing more. The beers were OK. They sell all (or most of) their beer to CITC Liquors, so any beers not found at the brewery can be found there for sure. |
66 /100 Sails Restaurant (Restaurant) MURI BEACH This place was the first restaurant Mrs Jimthechap and I visited on honeymoon in the Cooks and were happy to have found the local Matutu beer. It was served in good condition unlike the same purchased later from a bottle store that had not treated it well.
As for the restaurant, an idyllic setting on the very edge of the lagoon and they don’t mind if you drag a bit of sand in on your feet. Friendly, attentive staff, a good menu with fresh fish and a local classic dish Ika Mata (highly recommended). Don’t let the lack of range of beers put you off as you’ll find this to be the case the island over. |
