| 64 /100 17 HIGH STREET “Third visit, Feb 2017. A whole lot better thank goodness. Only one of their beers on, but it was fine, two other casks available plus the usual keg taps, bloke behind the bar jovial and attentive. Went to the Aug 2015 Bank Holiday beer festival (on the Saturday) to give the place a second chance. Great set up with a live band, gravity poured 18 beer selection plus 3 hand-pulls in the normal bar. Sunny in the garden and all was well with the world: then I had a beer, sadly the beer quality and condition were terrible, had three halves and left. The following words are from last year. Visited on 22nd May 2014. I lived in the village of Sutton-on-Sea until I was 8 years old and have been popping back sporadically ever since (some 50 plus years) and this hotel has always had happy memories for me. However on this my first visit since it started to brew it’s own beers it let me down greatly. They were preparing for a beer festival that started two days later and had no beers of their own available, not even in bottle form. I explained I’d driven 200 miles but the barman just laughed it off: I wasn’t impressed. Five of us wanting a new beer and they couldn’t be arsed to get us any. Doombar, Black Sheep and Exmoor Gold in cask form available but we wanted some of their stuff. Doubt I’ll bother to visit next time I’m in the area.“ |

| 66 /100 17 HIGH STREET “It may be a hotel, but it has it’s own brewery and as I entered I was greeted by the gorgeous aroma of malt being steeped. There are four real ale taps - one unfortunately serves Doom Bar, but the other three are generally devoted to local beers such as Fulstow and the hotels own brews (note that they only brew sporadically, and their own beers are generally only served at weekends and special occassions - ring ahead to check. There’s also a rare appearance for M&B Mild on keg. The staff are incredibly friendly (unusually so for a hotel), and the food is good-sized portions of pub grub at decent prices. The Sunday carvery is particularly good. Whilst this may not compare to the best beer bars in the UK, it’s a rare oasis in the beer desert that is the Lincolnshire coast, and I’d recommend it if you’re ever in the area.“ |
